I wade waist-deep into the ocean to reach a body floating face down in the local harbor. Police, first responders, and onlookers quietly watch from the shoreline, but blood splotches and marks in the sand suggest that something awful has happened here.In 1981, while practicing medicine in a small community on the southern coast of British Columbia, Dr. Robert Crossland is asked if he'd be interested in becoming the local coroner. Like many, Robert has thrilled to the crusading adventures of TV coroner Wojeck and Quincy, M.E., so he takes up the challenge. But soon he is to find just how far these TV programs are from the real world of a community coroner.During the following twenty-three years, Robert will investigate and report on more than 600 sudden, unexpected deaths in his community and in the surrounding ocean, lakes, forests, and mountains. In each case, he must establish not only who has died but when, where, how, and why. As a member of the community himself, he often finds himself personally connected with those who have died. Many of the deaths are natural, of course, but a surprising number are exceptional due to complicated, startling, unforeseen, and sometimes even astonishing circumstances and findings. These are the stories of more than a hundred of these remarkable, often horrifying events. They happen in homes, at work sites, during recreation, or while travelling in boats, planes, or on roads. Some of the deaths prove controversial and Dr. Crossland participates in inquests that lead to changes in policies or procedures that reduce the risk of further deaths ... or sometimes, heartbreakingly, make no difference at all. Sudden death is always disturbing and in vivid, pithy, engaging anecdotes based on his case files and notes, Dr. Crossland shares with readers, the who, when, where, how, and why.

Rogue Agent: From Secret Plots to Psychological Warfare: The Untold Story of Robert Bruce Lockhart
The startling adventures of a secret agent in Moscow during World War I and the Russian Revolution, this is the story of "the riveting life of maverick spy" Robert Bruce Lockhart. Diplomat, conspirator, intelligence gatherer, propagandist, and charmer, Rogue Agent tells the colorful story of London's key agent in Moscow during the first half of the twentieth century, Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart. Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart (1887-1970) was an impressive figure who played a vital role in both world wars. He was a man who charmed his way into the confidences of everyone from Leon Trotsky to Anthony Eden. A man whom the influential press baron Lord Beaverbrook claimed, "could well have been prime minister." And yet Lockhart died almost forgotten and near destitute, a Scottish footnote in the pages of history. Rogue Agent is the first biography of this gifted yet habitually flawed maverick. It chronicles his many exploits, from his time as Britain's agent in Moscow and his role in a plot to bring down the communist regime to his leadership in the Political Warfare Executive--a secret body responsible for disinformation and propaganda during World War II. Exploring Lockhart's unorthodox thinking and contributions to the development of psychological warfare, as well as his hedonistic lifestyle, late nights, and many affairs that left him in a state of perpetual debt and emotional turmoil, Rogue Agent presents the thrilling and dramatic tale of this unconventional war hero.

Committed to Christ: Six Steps to a Generous Life is a six-week stewardship program that presents giving as a lifelong journey in Christian discipleship. This Adult Readings and Study Book is designed for use in the six-week small group study that undergirds the program, as well as by others participating in the program. After an introductory Sunday stressing the importance of commitment to Christ, the next six weeks are spent exploring six steps to a generous life: Prayer Bible Reading Worship Witness Financial Giving Service With each step, readers are asked to assess prayerfully their own level of commitment and to consider increasing that commitment by one step. Equal emphasis is placed on each of the six steps, clearly communicating that this program is not simply about money, but rather cultivating a thankful heart that will lead us to giving more than we can ever imagine. For a program that focuses on the totality of stewardship, there is none better. -Jim Polk, Senior Pastor, El Dorado First United Methodist Church, El Dorado AR"

The Once and Future Jesus Conference took the quest of the historical Jesus to a new level. At this unprecedented gathering, leading thinkers turned their attention from the past to the future and asked: What do new understandings of Jesus mean for the church, the faith, and the world of tomorrow? Their answers can be found in the pages of this book.

Can the authentic words and deed of Jesus identified by the Jesus Seminar furnish a sufficient basis for a credible profile of the Jesus of history? That is the challenge faced by the contributors to this volume. Their efforts have resulted in a unique collection of studied impressions of Jesus. Here readers will see not Jesus the icon of myth and creed, but a provocative young man of first-century Palestine whose vision and determination to live the vision gave birth to a new form of faith and changed the course of history.

In the novel's Preface, the Author states: "In a few short words, the content of the book is this: A boy dedicates himself to the clerical profession with the fire of childlike enthusiasm, the youth goes astray in his profession, and the man, 'because not all flowering dreams ripened, ' has the notion of giving it up and 'fleeing to the desert.' Yet Heaven has decided otherwise. With resignation he comes back to himself and begins again to believe in his calling. Besides this, everything which is presented in the book belongs partly to the characteristics of the hero appearing in it, partly to the characteristics of our time chiefly with regard to religious, ecclesiastical, and especially clerical matters."
