Bearden (1911 1988) was a prominent African American artist often described as the consummate jazz painter, known for his innovative collages that explored themes of Black American culture, history, and personal experiences. This publication reexamines Bearden s life and work in the context of jazz, tracing the musician s impact from the artists earliest oil paintings to his iconic collages. In 1981, Bearden created nineteen collages that the artist called his 'Paris Blues,' or simply 'Jazz,' series. Conceived as pages for an oversized book that would be a response to the Hollywood movie Paris Blues (1961) though featuring Harlem and New Orleans along with Paris the series has been little known until now. Here the wildly colorful illustrations are set alongside Bearden s encounters with iconic jazz musicians, clubs, and cities. Examined for the first time in depth, the Paris Blues series makes a major statement on the relationships between visual art, jazz music, and urban spaces. The book also includes poignant photographs of Bearden and musicians in the 1950s 70s, such as Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.

I don't always know [students] by face; I know them by data, an elementary curriculum specialist explains ruefully in this broad examination of how No Child Left Behind impacts schools and shapes teaching practice. Capturing the changes teachers are experiencing, especially in the areas of mathematics and reading, the authors compare and contrast three schools with diverse student populations according to school norms and structures, professional roles and responsibilities, curriculum, staff development, and teaching and learning.Including rich observational data and personal accounts from educators, this inside look at school reform analyzes the effects of policies from multiple levels, examining relationships among initiatives at the federal, state, district, and local school levels, focuses on the impact that high-stakes testing policies have on reading and mathematics instruction in 4th and 5th grades, and provides teacher and principal perspectives on factors that influence how practitioners make sense of, mediate, and construct school policy.

This book provides academic reformers with a blueprint for tackling the upheaval facing media education. It calls for a new professionalism that rejects the status quo, reflects the mission and diversity of individual programs, and demands a redefinition of both traditional media studies and the liberal arts. The book directs philosophical assaults and uses real-life examples to challenge the paralyzing effects of the "seven deadly sins" of media education.
