This collection combines two important endeavors. First, in various pieces evidence about the behavior and performance of non-profit boards is reviewed and important additional evidence is presented. Noting the disparity between reality and widely-accepted beliefs is a long and necessary role for empirical researchers. The second endeavor in this collection is to present useful and realistic ideas and techniques for improving board functioning and board-staff relations. Nearly all the pieces have implicit or explicit applications.

Few modern art forms are as misunderstood as the craft of creating movie scripts, but "Tales from the Script" puts readers in the trenches of the Hollywood development process. Readers will revel in the exploits of Shane Black ("Lethal Weapon"), John Carpenter ("Halloween'), Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption"), Nora Ephron ("When Harry Met Sally"), William Goldman ("The Princess Bride"), David Hayter ("Watchmen"), Bruce Joel Rubin ("Ghost"), Paul Schrader ("Taxi Driver"), Ron Shelton ("Bull Durham"), and dozens of others. They'll learn how these writers surmounted the incredible odds against breaking into Hollywood, transformed their ideas into films that topped the box office, launched the careers of major stars, and earned Oscars. The stories behind the storytellers are as exciting, surprising, and inspirational as the narratives of their celebrated films. Entertaining, startling, and uplifting, this collection of exclusive interviews with Hollywood's leading screenwriters is a must read for those who dream of penning a Hollywood screenplay and for movie buffs excited to learn the stories behind their favorite films; it's a a master class taught by those who made that dream come true.
Genesis of the Big Bang

Genesis of the Big Bang

Ralph A. Alpher; Robert Herman

The authors of this volume have been intimately connected with the conception of the Big Bang model since 1947. Following the late George Gamov's ideas in 1942 and more particularly in 1946 that the early universe was an appropriate site for the synthesis of the elements, they became deeply involved in the question of cosmic nucleosynthesis and particularly the synthesis of the light elements. In the course of this work they developed a general relativistic model of the expanding universe with physics folded in, which led in a progressive, logical sequence to our prediction of the existence of a present cosmic background radiation some seventeen years before the observation of such radiation was reported by Penzias and Wilson. In addition, they carried out with James W. Follin, Jr., a detailed study of the physics of what was then considered to be the very early universe, starting a few seconds after the Big Bang, which still provides a methodology for studies of light element nucleosynthesis. Because of their involvement, they bring a personal perspective to the subject. They present a picture of what is now believed to be the state of knowledge about the evolution of the expanding universe and delineate the story of the development of the Big Bang model as they have seen and lived it from their own unique vantage point.

A Herman Melville Encyclopedia

A Herman Melville Encyclopedia

Robert L. Gale

Greenwood Press
1995
sidottu
Herman Melville is one of the most challenging authors of American literature. Known primarily as the author of Moby-Dick, he wrote several other novels, short stories, and poems. With the rise of interest in Melville in the 20th century, critical and biographical studies of Melville continue to be published at an ever-increasing rate. This encyclopedia is a comprehensive guide to Melville's rich and complex literary career. The volume includes several hundred alphabetically arranged entries for all of Melville's works and characters, and for his family members, friends, and acquaintances. Entries on the most important topics include bibliographies. The encyclopedia is more factual than critical, but scholarship from 1990 and beyond is emphasized throughout. The book also gives special attention to the 19th-century women who influenced Melville, for these women have often been overlooked. A chronology overviews the principal events in Melville's life, and a selected bibliography lists major studies.

"He has a very high and noble nature, and [is] better worth immortality than most of us"óso Hawthorne wrote of Herman Melville in his journal for 1856. This collection of essays undertakes to re-examine the "nobility" of Melville's powerful and engaging imagination. Not only are his primary motifs of "the journey" and the quest for Truth given attention, but also his subtleties as a great maker of fiction are analysed. Hence the collection as a whole stresses Melville's way with language and irony and his serious, inventive playfulness as a writer.

Award-winning Dutch architect Herman Hertzberger (born 1932) is one of the most important and critically influential figures in international architecture of the past half-century. He has consistently championed a fundamentally humanist modern architecture, rooted in its place and history, while simultaneously opening up new possibilities for dwelling. Today Hertzberger is rightly regarded as the world's foremost designer of schools, a building type he has almost singlehandedly redefined, and his innovative and fundamentally humane workplaces constitute some of the most compelling contemporary reinterpretations of this type of building. In this volume, acclaimed author and practicing architect Robert McCarter examines Hertzberger's most important architectural works through an analysis of the architect's design process and guiding ideas, particularly as these reflect Hertzberger's engagement with the modernist tradition, architectural history, urban space and the human experience of architecture.
