Jess finds himself in the town of Appleton, Texas, where he finds Lance 'Lucky' Leyden. Finding no law in town, he hauls the body to the town of Avery, Texas, to make a claim for the bounty on Leyden's head. While there, he discovers that the next man he's hunting, Lowe Rogan, is hanging around a town everyone calls Hades. They claim that the town rose up from the depths of hell and is rife with demons and witches. Jess doesn't believe any of it. He finds the town and discovers that it has been taken over by the Roper brothers and their gang of cold-blooded killers, including Lowe Rogan.Jess tracks Rogan from Hades to the town of Chilton, where he ends up killing him and another man by the name of Arron Carmichael. The law in Chilton, along with all the townsfolk, are terrified of the Roper brothers and their men. They believe that the town of Hades is cursed. Jess demands that the town marshal pay him his bounty on Rogan and he does so reluctantly.Roper's men take revenge on the town of Chilton by hanging the town marshal, leaving Jess feeling responsible for it. He vows to remove every cold-blooded killer from Hades and save the town, but he's up against some of the worst killers in the west. Then, the brother of Arron Carmichael, Jason, shows up in Chilton to kill Jess as a revenge killing. But surprisingly, Jason Carmichael teams up with Jess to rid Hades of Roper's ruthless gang of killers. Jess quickly finds out that Carmichael is suffering from bad memories of the Civil War and worries that Carmichael might just get him killed. The battle begins, lead starts flying and men start dying. Jess hopes that he's still standing when it's over, but he finds the job of saving what's left of Hades a much more difficult task. At the same time, he wonders if Jason Carmichael is helping only to find the perfect time to kill him for killing his brother Arron.

This book reviews psychological research on practical intelligence and describes its importance in everyday life. The authors reveal the importance of tacit knowledge - what we have learned from our own experience, through action. Although it has been seen as an indispensable element of expertise, intelligence researchers have found it difficult to quantify. The data shows that practical intelligence is psychologically and statistically distinct from academic intelligence, and is distinct as well from personality and styles of thought. The data also indicates that practical intelligence predicts job performance and even aspects of school performance as well as or better than does academic intelligence. This volume thoroughly examines studies of practical intelligence in the United States and in many other parts of the world as well, and for varied occupations, such as management, military leadership, teaching, research, and sales.

Bayesian inference networks, a synthesis of statistics and expert systems, have advanced reasoning under uncertainty in medicine, business, and social sciences. This innovative volume is the first comprehensive treatment exploring how they can be applied to design and analyze innovative educational assessments.Part I develops Bayes nets’ foundations in assessment, statistics, and graph theory, and works through the real-time updating algorithm. Part II addresses parametric forms for use with assessment, model-checking techniques, and estimation with the EM algorithm and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). A unique feature is the volume’s grounding in Evidence-Centered Design (ECD) framework for assessment design. This “design forward” approach enables designers to take full advantage of Bayes nets’ modularity and ability to model complex evidentiary relationships that arise from performance in interactive, technology-rich assessments such as simulations. Part III describes ECD,situates Bayes nets as an integral component of a principled design process, and illustrates the ideas with an in-depth look at the BioMass project: An interactive, standards-based, web-delivered demonstration assessment of science inquiry in genetics. This book is both a resource for professionals interested in assessment and advanced students. Its clear exposition, worked-through numerical examples, and demonstrations from real and didactic applications provide invaluable illustrations of how to use Bayes nets in educational assessment. Exercises follow each chapter, and the online companion site provides a glossary, data sets and problem setups, and links to computational resources.

The Metaphysics of Representation

The Metaphysics of Representation

Representing the world is a puzzling thing. How can it be that mundane events such as processing a thought--and from there putting those thoughts into words--acquire this property of 'aboutness'? How can expressions, which depend on anything from the most fundamental regularities in the universe to trivial matters of gossip, be either true or false? In The Metaphysics of Representation, J. Robert G. Williams tells a story about how representational properties arise out of a fundamentally non-representational world. The representational properties of language are reduced, via convention, to the representational properties of thoughts. The representational properties of thoughts are reduced, via principles of rationalization, to the representational properties of perception and intention. And this most fundamental layer of representation is explained in terms of the functions they have to communicate. Williams integrates work from rival traditions to present a combined perspective in the metaphysics of representation, give new predictions and explanations of representational phenomena, and offer new solutions to long-standing problems.
