Ludwig Wachler verfasste mit seiner Geschichte der historischen Forschung und Kunst die erste Geschichte der Geschichtsschreibung und grundete damit die Wissenschaft von Geschichte auf Geschichte selbst. Wie er dazu kam, wird hier erstmals systematisch unter Berucksichtigung aller seiner Werke untersucht. Dabei wird deutlich, dass er der Wechselwirkung zwischen Padagogik, Politik und Wissenschaften, wie er sie im Laufe der Jahrhunderte beobachtet, eine grosse Bedeutung beimass.
