Thomas Merton was one of the greatest contemporary spiritual writers, whose books have enabled millions of readers to rediscover the importance of prayer in their inner lives. Yet until now Merton's own personal interior life has remained something of a mystery. In Thomas Merton: Master of Attention one of the most distinguished Merton scholars reveals his 'way of prayer'. An ideal introduction to Merton, and essential reading for every admirer of his work.
During his lifetime, priest-poet Gerard Manley Hopkins appeared to be a failure. His daring conversion to Catholicism and entry into the Society of Jesus in Victorian England alienated him from friends and family and dashed his chances for the brilliant academic career that would have been his. Because he championed the theology of Duns Scotus over that of Thomas Aquinas, he “failed” his final theology exams and never achieved the top rank of professed Jesuit father. As for his poetry, even his best friends didn’t understand it, and he met with consistent lack of success in getting it published. Today Hopkins is regarded as one of the greatest poets in the English language as readers have come to understand and love his provocative, challenging verse with its startling vocabulary and unusual rhythms. He is also a standard-setter for those looking to espouse a Christ-centered ecology. In Walking with Gerard Manley Hopkins Robert Waldron takes us on a psychological and spiritual journey with this remarkable poet and priest. Hopkins’ self-imposed repression of his enjoyment of beauty and of his creativity, his frustration at his seeming inability to accomplish anything worthwhile, his unwavering devotion to Jesus, his depression and its influence on the “Terrible Sonnets”—Waldron offers a probing exploration of them all. To longtime Hopkins aficionados as well as newcomers to Hopkins’ life and work, Waldron is unfailingly a sensitive and sympathetic guide. †
Robert Waldron's new book serves as an introduction to the life of the world's favorite saint. The author explores Francis from three perspectives: biographical, psychological and aesthetic. His book is innovative because he understands Francis through our new science of psychology and through the beauty of Bellini's masterpiece St. Francis in the Desert, the painting shown on the cover of the book. For a psychological understanding Waldron employes Carl Jung's theory of individuation: the steps taken by Francis to become his True Self. Waldron also employs Bellini's painting to shed light on St. Francis the mystic, he who was gifted by God with the Stigmata. Waldron also addresses Francis's poem The Canticle of the Creatures, offering an exegesis of the poem that also provides insights into the saint's life as Christian and as a mystic. Waldron's book provides a Study Guide that encourages the reader to go more deeply into understanding Francis's life.

At the age of twenty-five, Benjamin James Brenkert--a young man from Long Island, a social work student, and an internet vocation to the priesthood--entered one of the historically boldest, influential, apostolic religious orders of the Roman Catholic Church. Aged thirty-four, and a member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in good standing, Brenkert was missioned to the laity by his last religious superior. Brenkert could not come out publicly as a gay Jesuit and support his LGBTQ peers who were being fired from various church employment and volunteer activities because of whom they loved. Brenkert had never concealed his sexuality from his religious superiors, he knew all too well what was written in the Church's Catechism about homoseuxals. Still, he felt uniquely called to respond to God's invitation to serve him in total love as a priest, something confirmed in him in prayer during his thirty-day silent retreat and affirmed to him by his religious superiors and peers throughout his life in the Jesuits. In his Open Letter to Pope Francis in 2014 Brenkert wrote, ""Pope Francis . . .I ask you to instruct the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to tell Catholic institutions not to fire any more LGBTQ Catholics. I ask you to speak out against laws that criminalize and oppress LGBTQ people around the globe. These actions would bring true life to your statement, 'Who am I to judge'"" In 2015, the United States Supreme Court struck down bans on same-sex marriage in Obergell v. Hodges and in 2020, the United States Supreme Court expanded the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite these landmark achievements in the public sector, LGBTQ Catholics still cannot receive communion and must always seek reconciliation. Their flourishing as part of their religious community is always frustrated. Brenkert's account of his life before, in, and after the Jesuits is interwoven with trials and tribulations, but remains always full of hope, written candidly and with bracing honesty. Brenkert offers readers the opportunity to join him on a theological and spiritual pilgrimage, one that ends with readers making a discernment. The world today is full of distraction, misinformation, and timidity, Brenkert's pilgrimage is full of conviction, heartful, written with an eagerness to help people of faith and no faith at all find their true selves, all for the greater glory of God.
Henri Nouwen (1932-1996) is considered one of the greatest spiritual masters of the modern age. Born, educated and ordained in Holland, Nouwen came to America as a professor of pastoral theology. When Jean Vanier invited him to come to join his mission to help the handicapped, Nouwen left the academic world behind to become the pastor of L'Arche Daybreak, a home for the disabled in Toronto. Here he found a home among God's wounded, and it was here that he was most happy. His rich life as a writer, lecturer and priest was cut short by a heart attack in 1996. Nouwen's lectures were standing room only. Students flocked to hear his message that we are God's beloved children, that our God is the One of unconditional love, who loves us now, with no strings attached. All of his books are arrows pointing towards this love, reminding Christians that Christ came into the world not to blame but to love, a message we desperately need today.

This important book is a thorough survey of every major study of the efficacy of psychoanalytic treatment. The authors—all well-known psychoanalysts—critically analyze the studies and their findings, discuss the issues that have been and should be explored in such studies, and examine the problems in conducting research into psychoanalytic outcomes. The authors begin by providing a definition of psychoanalysis, establishing central psychoanalytic goals, and determining what questions need to be addressed in assessing whether analysis is effective. They then describe their methods and criteria for evaluating modern research on psychoanalytic outcome and apply these criteria to four major studies of adult psychoanalytic patients, several studies of child and adolescent analysis, and some small-group studies. They find that all the studies show that psychoanalysis is an effective treatment for many patients—and that some cherished assumptions about psychoanalysis are probably wrong. In the final part of the book, the authors address the challenges of collecting empirical data on psychoanalysis and explore the possibilities inherent in the single-case study.

Today’s society is faced with a multitude of compounding and inter-related socio-ecological challenges. In order to adequately navigate this ‘sustainability challenge’ and to capture the innovation opportunities that come with it, we need professionals from all sectors of society who can help plan and act strategically towards sustainability.Sustainability handbook first outlines a structured, strategic approach to handling this complex reality known as the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD), including an operational definition of sustainability derived from foundational knowledge about the social and ecological systems. From there, the book shares examples of how the FSSD can be applied in a variety of situations, sectors, and scales and points to the self-benefit for companies, municipalities and other organizations of working strategically for sustainability. The readers are left with a solid understanding of how to define sustainability and how to plan and act towards it, including how to select from the vast array of sustainability-related concepts, methods and tools in the field today.Sustainability handbook combines the academic and practical experience from a collection of authors. The content has been used, tested and refined over many iterations, and now serves as a resource for academic courses and programmes as well as work in practice around the world. Any student or practitioner looking for more clarity on how to strategically plan and act towards sustainability in a structured, scientific, and collaborative manner will find value inside. Because of the generic nature of the FSSD, it can be useful for any discipline, from engineering, to product-service innovation, to business management, to urban and regional planning, and beyond.Second Edition - with revised and new content, for example, a new definition of social sustainability and a chapter on questions and answers about the FSSD.
This is a collection of writings and is not a chronological offering, but an inspirational one.Serving Littleness was written on January 28, 2007 at a time when I was examining what we have been taught, both individually and as a nation, that it was appropriate, even necessary, to help the weak and needy. Anthology of Love is a collection of poems I wrote while spending a week in silence at a Vedanta Retreat in Marin County, California in 1985. This was a time of major transition and turned out to be the precursor to a dramatic focusing of my life purpose. The Voice Within is the earliest of the included writings in this volume, being written during a specific period of time between September 28 and October 12, 1980. These were my spiritual questions, directed to what some might call my Higher Self, and the answers I was aware of at that time. While I experience less separation between my self and my Self than I did at that time, this was a profound developing spiritual understanding. The Legend of Turtle Feather is a short piece I wrote on a 7 day Vision Quest in the mountains of Northern California in September of 2001. There were 10 of us gathered for the Vision Quest and, unknown to us at the time, we exited our ceremonial circle to go our separate ways at the exact time of the bombing of the first Tower in New York on "9/11". We knew nothing, consciously, about what had happened until we left the wilderness a week later and saw our first newspaper. The Fool's Journey was a piece I wrote in 1997 as I was exploring the relationship and progression of the major arcana cards in the Tarot. I have always appreciated the symbology of the Tarot, the I Ching and other "esoteric" games, which allows us to project our current condition or experience onto something seemingly external to us in order to come to a deeper understanding or our life. These writings serve as my reminders, and as my gift to you.
This is a purely Spirit-guided work about the author's personal learning from the workings of Nature."TAO", literally translated, means "The Way". It represents the underlying natural order of the universe. When we have forgotten how to be in harmony with life, we can be reminded by observing Nature.
Over the years I have become familiar with many different self-help, personal growth and spiritual development programs. My personal interest has always been to discover the underlying similarities in all of these approaches, with the belief that the highest truth will become more clearly known and understood by seeing where we all are joined, where we are One. It is at the level where we recognize our Oneness and Wholeness that I find my greatest peace. So it is for me with Symbology and Spiritual Numerology. There is a very basic level at which all of the apparently divergent or differing systems, programs and interpretations are in agreement. This represents a high level of truth from which all of the various systems have evolved to serve the specific needs and desires of the groups or individuals involved in their formulation. What I have attempted to present here is a personal workbook designed to share with you what I consider to be the highest and best from all of the various systems I have come in contact with. It is designed to be as free from "interpretation" as possible to allow you the greatest possible freedom to discover your own highest truth. From your own personal experiences and deep inner knowing you will bring to this work precisely the meaning which will have the greatest significance to you as you travel along your path.

This book covers several aspects of reservoir management, from initial analysis to enhanced recovery methods, simulation, and history matching. Split into four parts, part one provides readers with an introduction to the physical properties of reservoir rocks. Part two provides an introduction to enhanced recovery methods used for conventional oil production. Part three shows how numerical methods can be used to simulate the behaviour of oil and gas reservoirs. Finally, part four looks at history matching of reservoirs through the building of numerical models using past data, in order to provide best practice for future reservoir development and management.Written as the third volume in the Imperial College Lectures in Petroleum Engineering, and based on lectures that have been given in the world-renowned Imperial College Masters Course in Petroleum Engineering, Topics in Reservoir Management provides the basic information needed for students and practitioners of petroleum engineering and petroleum geoscience.
In August 1966, two weeks after England won the World Cup, and four miles from Wembley Stadium, Harry Roberts and his associates gunned down three unarmed police detectives in front of dozens of primary school children. The nation was outraged and struggled to understand what had happened. Roberts had served in the special forces during the conflict in Malaya and claimed he was assigned to kill selected targets. He returned to the UK keen to continue such work in civilian life, but he was rejected by the two gangs that dominated the London Criminal Underworld in the 1960s, the Krays and the Richardsons. Prophetically, they considered him to be too violent. Following the Shepherd's Bush Massacre, Roberts' accomplices, John Witney and John Duddy, were quickly arrested, but Roberts went to ground, using the survival and camouflage skills that he had learned in the British Army. Harry Roberts and Foxtrot One-One covers every detail of the investigation and manhunt that followed, from arrest, trial and imprisonment to Roberts' eventual (and controversial) release. One of the most notorious crimes of the 20th century. The case that led to the police firearms training arrangements seen today. Looks at the tragic impact on the victims' families. By a former senior Metropolitan Police armed officer.
In the novel's Preface, the Author states: "In a few short words, the content of the book is this: A boy dedicates himself to the clerical profession with the fire of childlike enthusiasm, the youth goes astray in his profession, and the man, 'because not all flowering dreams ripened, ' has the notion of giving it up and 'fleeing to the desert.' Yet Heaven has decided otherwise. With resignation he comes back to himself and begins again to believe in his calling. Besides this, everything which is presented in the book belongs partly to the characteristics of the hero appearing in it, partly to the characteristics of our time chiefly with regard to religious, ecclesiastical, and especially clerical matters."
