This book examines the academic life of Oskar Lange and his contribution to economics. It charts the development of his ideas across his working life and reflects on how the events of this period shaped his view of economics. His early engagement with European Marxism during the 1920s is outlined, as well as the ways that the 1929 economic crash encouraged Lange to evaluate the social dimension of economics and consider the economic underpinnings of a socialist planned economy. Lange’s engagement with debates surrounding the theory of production, capital, the theory of interest, welfare economics, and general equilibrium during the 1930s and 1940s are outlined and provide insight into how Lange viewed the key economic debates of the day. The legacy of Lange, not just within socialist economics, but within the discipline more generally, is discussed to reflect upon his place within the Marxist tradition and his relevance within modern economics. This book offers unique insight into the work and legacy of Oskar Lange. It will be of interest to students and researchers working within the history of economic thought and the political economy.

Creating the Future of Health is the fascinating story of the first fifty years of the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary.Founded at the recommendation of the Royal Commission on Health Services in 1964 the Cumming School has, from the very beginning, focused on innovation and excellence in health education. With a pioneering focus on novel, responsive and systems-based approaches, it was one of the first sites to pilot multi-year training programs in family medicine and remains one of only two three-year medical schools in North America. Since the first class in 1973, over 5000 doctors have graduated from the Cumming School of Medicine. Centres of clinical excellences have been created at four affiliated teaching hospitals and the school now boasts seven medical research institutes at the Foothills/Alberta Children's Campus, the largest medical complex in the province. Drawing on interviews with key players and extensive research into documents and primary material, Creating the Future of Health traces the history of the school through the leadership of its Deans. This is a story of perseverance through fiscal turbulence, sweeping changes to health care and health care education, and changing ideas of what health services are and what they should do. It is a story of triumph, of innovation, and of the Calgary tenacious spirit that thrives to this day at the Cumming School of Medicine.

Endorsements of “Biblical Creation on Solid Ground – Arguments from Science, Philosophy and Theology” J P Moreland It is so refreshing when Young Earth Creationists produce rigorous, intellectually sophisticated defenses and extensions of their views. This is why I welcome the release of Biblical Creation on Solid Ground, edited by two highly competent thinkers—Ola Hössjer and Samuel Lampa. Whether or not one agrees with their conclusions, intellectual integrity and loving God with our minds require us to read works that are important, well-done, and get to the heart of relevant issues. This high-level book does just that. The editors have assembled a highly qualified team of Christian intellectuals, each writing in his or her area of expertise. I welcome this addition to the debate. JP Moreland, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University and editor of Theistic Evolution: A Scientific, Philosophical, and Theological Critique Pekka Reinikainen Game over Darwin. In the beginning was information, not a warm little pond! There is a revolution brewing in origin science. Genetics confirms the reality of a Y-chromosome Noah and his mitochondrial-DNA daughters-in law, Eve's descendants. Atheists' own weapon, methodological naturalism, annihilates neo-Darwinism. This book shows that biology and Christianity make sense only in the light of a recent creation. Pekka Reinikainen M.D. Paul Nelson The one who states his case first seems right,” Proverbs 18:17 tells us, “until the other comes and examines him.” Since the rise of evolutionary naturalism in the mid-19th century, the possibility that the early chapters of Genesis describe real history has been ruled out of the court of science. Thus, it isn’t so much that evolutionary naturalism speaks first nowadays – rather, naturalism represents the only voice that most people hear about their ultimate origins. This new volume, from a talented and well-informed set of contributors and editors, offers vivid testimony in reply. With chapters on the philosophy of science, the importance of creation for the Christian worldview, evidence for design in biology, cosmology, and Earth history, as well as other topics, Biblical Creation on Solid Ground gives the reader a refreshingly different perspective on key questions considered already answered by the naturalistic mainstream. Highly recommended. Paul A. Nelson, PhD Discovery Institute & Biola University

NEWS FLASH: Spy Spots Ominous New Russian Submarine--NATO is disconcerted---The Canadian Counters---Doomsday Clock Inches Perilously Closer to Midnight The story, whose core facts are true, begins when a spy, code-named Red Cross, spots the Victor III submarine in Polyarny (Russia) in 1979. Its novel design features a large, ominous pod mounted at its stern. The pod, plus several other factors, lead Red Cross to infer that the submarine is as stealthy as American boats and, therefore, a threat to NATO defenses. Amid the tense Cold War, this is highly unsettling news because it presages destabilization of the Arms Race. The Victor III, captained by the hapless Arkady Rykov, has been sent on a secret mission by an aging Russian Admiral, intent on disrupting world politics. Red Cross and his dissident cohorts smuggle a description of The Victor III to The Canadian, a shadowy businessman from Helsinki, who alerts NATO. The news sends tremors throughout the organization. Is the pod Russia's new "first-strike" nuclear weapon? To answer that question, The Canadian, a talented female NATO encryption analyst, Defense Intelligence Agencies, and several U.S. Navy submarine crews undertake to find it in the Barents Sea and learn about its technology before it completes its mission. Their quest takes them from Belgium to America, Finland, Norway, and ultimately, to Paradise. Amid the tense search, The Canadian and the NATO analyst become romantically involved but complications arise, which leads to a wild and improbable conclusion.

This controversial book challenges the accepted theories on the genetic mechanism of evolution. The story these three biologists have to tell may very well upset the whole field of biology. The traditional view of evolution, which grew out of the work of Gregor Mendel and Charles Darwin and is strongly supported by present-day scientists like Richard Dawkins and Stephen Jay Gould, assumes we are at the mercy of our genes, which we inherit largely unchanged from our parents, except for rare random mutations which accumulated and lead to change over evolutionary time. Those genes are coded in the chromosomes of the sperm and egg cells of the parents, and so only changes to those two types of cell have any chance of being passed down to the parents'' offspring. Any changes, accidents, or surgery to the rest of the parent's bodies are not transmitted to the newborn. The theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics,if you build up your muscles your kids will be born with a propensity toward great strength,on the other hand, favoured by Jean Lamarck in the nineteenth-century, was brought down by nineteenth-century science. But now, as this challenging and thrilling book shows, it looks as though, at least for certain structures in the body's immune system, Lamarck may have been right after all.Based on their own ground-breaking work over the past two decades, as well as that of other molecular biologists, Steele, Lindley, and Blanden argue that for one adaptive body system there is strong molecular genetic evidence that aspects of acquired immunities developed by parents in their own lifetime can be passed on to their offspring. Certain to stimulate lively debate, Lamarck's Signature gives new life and scientific credibility to the Lamarckian heresy, the notion of the inheritance of acquired characteristics.
