An engaging introduction to the use of game theory to study lingistic meaning. In Meaningful Games, Robin Clark explains in an accessible manner the usefulness of game theory in thinking about a wide range of issues in linguistics. Clark argues that we use grammar strategically to signal our intended meanings: our choices as speaker are conditioned by what choices the hearer will make interpreting what we say. Game theory-according to which the outcome of a decision depends on the choices of others-provides a formal system that allows us to develop theories about the kind of decision making that is crucial to understanding linguistic behavior.Clark argues the only way to understand meaning is to grapple with its social nature-that it is the social that gives content to our mental lives. Game theory gives us a framework for working out these ideas. The resulting theory of use will allow us to account for many aspects of linguistic meaning, and the grammar itself can be simplified. The results are nevertheless precise and subject to empirical testing.Meaningful Games offers an engaging and accessible introduction to game theory and the study of linguistic meaning. No knowledge of mathematics beyond simple algebra is required; formal definitions appear in special boxes outside the main text. The book includes an extended argument in favor of the social basis of meaning; a brief introduction to game theory, with a focus on coordination games and cooperation; discussions of common knowledge and games of partial information; models of games for pronouns and politeness; and the development of a system of social coordination of reference.

Thematic Theory in Syntax and Interpretation
In recent years, lexical argument structure, in the guise of thematic roles, has come to play an increasingly important part in syntactic theory. The first part of this book, first published in 1990, explores the interplay between thematic role assignment and movement processes, with particular reference to the explanatory problem of nominalisation. The second part explores the relationship between thematic roles and control. Particularly close attention is paid to implicit arguments, arbitrary control and adverbs of quantification. A theory of control is presented which unifies obligatory and non-obligatory control. The theory of control, furthermore, generalises to account for the binding gaps in purposive clauses, tough movement constructions, infinitival clauses and other constructions which have typically been analysed as involving long-distance dependencies. This title will be of interest to students of linguistics.

Join Robin Clarke, world class naturalist, on his dramatic venture in Bolivia, to establish the Ambor national park along with his friend and Bolivian zoologist Noel Kempff Mercado, who was eventually murdered by a drug cartel. Clarke battled for decades to save the beautiful rain forests, terminate the trafficking in endangered species, and grappled with the Californian mafia's drug cartel. And he risked his life to save hikers lost in the wilds of the Bolivian mountains. Though this book is essentially a very personal memoir, it reads like a suspense story.

Only 3 per cent of the world's water is freshwater and about one third of that is inaccessible. The rest is very unevenly distributed, parts of Canada and the Amazon, for example are both more than amply suppied. Terrible and permanent water stress can be seen, among other places, in the drylands of Africa caused not just by drought, but by poverty leading to poor land management and over-population.;As with so many other things, those most badly affected are the poor nations of the world who are frequently faced with an impossible dilemma: they must either limit their water use to decreasingly available unused water or they must make do with used but untreated and, therefore, dangerous water. They cannot afford the technology to recycle safely. In rural regions increased populations and frequent droughts mean that in addition to the lack of fresh, clean water for human consumption there are inadequate supplies for crop irrigation.;An enormous proportion of the world's population lives in countries which share their primary sources of water with other nations, for example 12 countries depend on the Danube, 10 on the Niger, 9 on the Nile. Water is essential to development, both in poor countries and in rich, the use made of a major river in one country can affect seriously the possibilities open to another. Hence the international shortage is a major threat to world security. To take but one example, if Turkey goes ahead with its plan to damn the Euphrates, then Iraq and Syria, already water-stressed countries could be in even more serious trouble - they are hardly likely to accept the situation.;This book describes the world situation, addresses the nature of the problems, shows the ways in which they have been shamefully neglected in all development and economic thinking and proposes some solutions, often simple and well-tried but which could ensure water security for the whole world.

Through exploring various disasters, Clarke ends up exploring memory—“the worst disaster since the last one”—writing about people lost through the prison system, disasters man-made we don’t wish to think about, and just where the accumulation of disaster upon disaster might end up taking us. “What do you love about this / world? Without what is there nothing // else to say?”—rob mclennan, rob mclennan's blog Lines the Quarry writes of and into that ongoing disaster and possibility, interjecting into the commercial language of success the many violations—bodily and otherwise—that define capitalist exploitation. Within a span of 15 days, Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch coal mine exploded, killing 29 miners, and BP’s Deepwater Horizon exploded, killing 11 workers and leaking over 5 million barrels of oil (and counting). A year and a half later, Occupy occurred. Lines the Quarry writes of and into that ongoing disaster and possibility, interjecting into the commercial language of success the many violations—bodily and otherwise—that define capitalist exploitation. Weaving together autobiography, lies, half-truths, corporate horror stories and labor’s radical past, this book seeks to articulate both our devastation and our possibility in very human terms. In a language familiar yet strange, composed of fragments, multiple speech registers and broken syntactical arrangements, the book examines lives lived through very difficult circumstances and the corporate forces that range upon our earth.

ANIMA MUNDI: WORLD SOUL AWAKENINGAnima Mundi, or World Soul, is an intrinsic connection between all living things. The Garden is one such approach to help restore the soul to the world. Through meditation and spiritual alchemy, a Dreamer awakens his soul and befriends a beautiful lotus flower and together they travel through a magical landscape to recapture the wonderment of being young and the transcendent beauty of childhood dreams. The Dreamer learns to follow his heart and discovers it takes greater courage to let go of life than to hold on to it.The unity of our universe can be seen through mystical storytelling, poetic prose and dazzling colour illustrations. The Garden is a fable on life, on growing up, getting lost, and finding your way home and is open for interpretation, allowing the reader to bring their own understanding and meaning to the story.THE RETURN OF THE SOUL TO THE WORLDHow do we restore our world back to its prime and pristine condition? In the words of Carl Jung, 'How can we return our light to the World Soul'The World Soul, known throughout antiquity as Anima Mundi and more commonly referred to as Gaia, Mother Earth, or the Feminine Essence, is what is lacking in the present way we see the world. We overemphasise the material world view, conditioned into us through corporatism. These are the powers of the underworld, separating us from the light. Yet dormant in our ignorance lay the sleeping 'Sophia', the goddess of wisdom and spiritual potential. According to sacred texts from India, Egypt and Sumeria, she is the soul of the world.Finding life's purpose is unveiling the light of the soul that shines within us. When our light is restored, it returns light to all of creation. Therefore, our real gift to the world is restoring our own light, bringing awareness of life's purpose. When we set free the light within us, we release our light back into the world-we awake the World Soul, the Spirit of Gaia, by our own awakening. To heal and transform the world, is to invoke the magical and mysterious power hidden inside us.Returning the World Soul is restoring the female essence back into the world, re-establishing spiritual intelligence, benevolent guidance, clear direction and, most importantly, true wisdom. Between the words and images lay a hidden place of magical meaning- 'The innermost and most secret numinosum of man.' Using poetic prose accompanied by beautiful art, allows space for quiet reflection, so the reader can experience, for themselves, the awakening of their own soul back into the world. Let us all return home to the treasure of our own true sovereignty and wisdom.

The Baton Rouge Bus Boycott was the first large-scale bus boycott by Blacks of the segregated bus system in the United States. In June of 1953, Martha White, who was a 23-year-old Black housekeeper, refused to move from the Whites Only Section of the city-owned segregated bus. The Black church and community came together both legally and physically. Within days, the impact to the city-owned segregated buses demanded public policy changes in Baton Rouge. Discover how hidden figures like Martha White and unsung heroes of the Baton Rouge Bus Boycott created the blueprint for the Free Ride System. This photo book of a poem reflects a personal reflection on the people, places, and sequential events of the Baton Rouge Bus Boycott in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Two years later in 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for sitting in the Whites Only section of a segregated bus. Consequently, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a 13-month bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama modeled after the Baton Rouge Bus Boycott's blueprint. The Montgomery Bus Boycott ended when the Supreme Court ruled segregation on public buses was unconstitutional.
