In The Revolution Has Come Robyn C. Spencer traces the Black Panther Party's organizational evolution in Oakland, California, where hundreds of young people came to political awareness and journeyed to adulthood as members. Challenging the belief that the Panthers were a projection of the leadership, Spencer draws on interviews with rank-and-file members, FBI files, and archival materials to examine the impact the organization's internal politics and COINTELPRO's political repression had on its evolution and dissolution. She shows how the Panthers' members interpreted, implemented, and influenced party ideology and programs; initiated dialogues about gender politics; highlighted ambiguities in the Panthers' armed stance; and criticized organizational priorities. Spencer also centers gender politics and the experiences of women and their contributions to the Panthers and the Black Power movement as a whole. Providing a panoramic view of the party's organization over its sixteen-year history, The Revolution Has Come shows how the Black Panthers embodied Black Power through the party's international activism, interracial alliances, commitment to address state violence, and desire to foster self-determination in Oakland's black communities.

Learning Discourses and the Discourses of Learning

Learning Discourses and the Discourses of Learning

Helen Marriott; Tim Moore; Robyn Spence-Brown

Monash University Publishing
2007

Learning Discourses and the Discourses of Learning is an edited collection of papers exploring issues of teaching and learning in academic settings. The key theme of the volume is 'discourses' - especially as these relate to institutional policies, disciplinary practices and students' processes of learning in the academy. Particular attention is paid to the experiences of second-language students studying at Australian universities as well as those learning foreign languages in Australia. Employing a variety of methodologies and theoretical perspectives, the papers in Learning Discourses are unified by a focus on rich and socially situated empirical data. The book addresses issues highly pertinent to the dynamic character of contemporary higher education in Australia, one dominated by trends towards the internationalisation and professionalisation of university programs, and the growing intercultural nature of social and academic interactions. Part one covers issues of discourse and change, exploring processes of discourse acquisition and production in a range of disciplinary contexts, along with the nexus between academic and professional discourses. Part two deals with broader issues of the participation and socialisation of students in second-language-use situations, ranging from macro (social planning and policy) issues to the micro (interpersonal) level. Part three looks at the social mediation of foreign language learning covering a range of tertiary and secondary settings in Australia and has a particular focus on Japanese as a foreign language. This book is intended for academics and students - postgraduate and undergraduate - working in foreign language programs, academic and language support programs, and applied linguistics.
Small-scale Production of Cementitious Materials
Cement, or at least some form of cementing material, is an essential ingredient of virtually every type of construction. Two alternative approaches to large scale factory production are considered: firstly, the manufacture of Portland cement, or material of comparable quality, in much smaller kilns, and, secondly, the upgrading of village-scale technology, based on lime and pozzolanas. A comprehensive list of references and further information is also listed.
Why Do Buildings Collapse in Earthquakes? Building for Safety in Seismic Areas
WHY DO BUILDINGS COLLAPSE IN EARTHQUAKES? Learn from the personal experience and insights of leading earthquake engineering specialists as they examine the lessons from disasters of the last 30 years and propose a path to earthquake safety worldwide Why Do Buildings Collapse in Earthquakes?: Building for Safety in Seismic Areas delivers an insightful and comprehensive analysis of the key lessons taught by building failures during earthquakes around the world. The book uses empirical evidence to describe the successes of earthquake engineering and disaster preparedness, as well as the failures that may have had tragic consequences. Readers will learn what makes buildings in earthquake zones vulnerable, what can be done to design, build and maintain those buildings to reduce or eliminate that vulnerability, and what can be done to protect building occupants. Those who are responsible for the lives and safety of building occupants and visitors—architects, designers, engineers, and building owners or managers—will learn how to provide adequate safety in earthquake zones. The text offers useful and accessible answers to anyone interested in natural disasters generally and those who have specific concerns about the impact of earthquakes on the built environment. Readers will benefit from the inclusion of: A thorough introduction to how buildings have behaved in earthquakes, including a description of the world’s most lethal earthquakes and the fatality trend over timeAn exploration of how buildings are constructed around the world, including considerations of the impact of climate and seismicity on home designA discussion of what happens during an earthquake, including the types and levels of ground motion, landslides, tsunamis, and sequential effects, and how different types of buildings tend to behave in response to those phenomena What different stakeholders can do to improve the earthquake safety of their buildings The owners and managers of buildings in earthquake zones and those responsible for the safety of people who occupy or visit them will find Why Do Buildings Collapse in Earthquakes? Building for Safety in Seismic Areas essential reading, as will all architects, designers and engineers who design or refurbish buildings in earthquake zones.

Since the publication of the successful first edition of Earthquake Protection there have been 110 lethal earthquakes, killing 130 000 people; there have also been significant developments in the field of earthquake risk management, particularly in the modelling and analysis of risk for insurance and financial services. Furthermore, major earthquake disasters, such as the 1994 Northridge earthquake in California, the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan and the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake in Turkey have occurred. The experience and knowledge gained through these events have improved our understanding of how to manage, mitigate and work towards the prevention of similar catastrophes. The 1990s were in fact the costliest decade on record in terms of disaster management due to such seismic events, placing unprecedented pressure on the insurance industry in particular, and changing its view of earthquake protection. Significantly revised and updated, this second edition continues to provide a comprehensive overview of how to reduce the impact of earthquakes on people and property, and implement best practice in managing the consequences of such disasters. It also includes significant coverage of the techniques of modelling earthquake catastrophe. Each chapter deals with a separate aspect of protection, and covers a wide range of economic and social conditions, drawing on the authors' considerable personal experience and with reference to real life examples. Key features include: * Recent event coverage * Modern developments in the theory and practice of planning and engineering loss estimation techniques, along with new engineering techniques such as microzonation and hazard-mapping * Historic buildings experience * An entirely new chapter on 'Earthquakes and Finance' This valuable book provides essential reading for earthquake and structural engineers and geoscientists, as well as insurers and loss prevention specialists, risk managers and assessors involved in managing earthquake risk, urban and regional planners, and emergency management agencies.

Foreword by Robin SpenceSkip Spence was a soldier, a rock star, a folkie, an innovator, an addict, a cult phenomenon and a ward of the state. The cast of characters in his story include some of the biggest stars in music: Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young and many more. His life is the story of the Sixties - it's the story of San Francisco, the biggest bands in America and rock'n'roll mayhem. Although Spence spent much of his life battling addiction and mental illness, during his lucid moments he performed in several bands and is best known for his work with Jefferson Airplane and as the co-founder of Moby Grape. Tracks from his cult solo album Oar has been covered by Tom Waits, Beck and Robert Plant. With family photos, a foreword by Robin Spence, and accounts from his friends, bandmates and family, Weighted Down is the first book to tell his story in full.

This book describes principles and construction techniques for builders, householders and communities who are building in hazard-prone areas. The principles are clearly and simply presented- and in a form which can be adapted for use in training or public information campaigns - with an emphasis on improving hazard-resistance at minimum cost; and the book concentrates on those principles which are universally applicable. It includes sections on site safety; building safely in brick and block; building safely in earth and stone; building safely in timber; building safely in reinforced concrete- and building a safe roof. This book is part of the Building for Safety Initiative of the Overseas Development Administration of the UK government, which aims to bring the knowledge of how to build safely to those who need that knowledge most. The project was devised and executed by Cambridge Architectural Research Limited and the Disaster Management Centre of Oxford Brookes University. This volume from Cambridge Architectural Research, is one of four which the Building for Safety team have produced for this initiative.
Spenser's Faerie Queene and the Cult of Elizabeth

Spenser's Faerie Queene and the Cult of Elizabeth

Robin Headlam Wells

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD

sidottu
First published in 1983, Spenser’s Faerie Queene and the Cult of Elizabeth presents The Faerie Queene as a central document in the cult of Elizabeth. It shows how Spenser combines the resources of medieval iconography and Renaissance rhetoric in celebrating the Queen as the predestined ruler of an elect nation. In its introductory discussion of Renaissance poetics, the book emphasises the contemporary belief in the moral function of praise. Particular attention is given to the popular identification of Elizabeth with the Virgin Mary. If Elizabeth’s gender created problems for a poet writing in the heroic mode, at the same time it made available to him a form of praise that no secular poet had been able to use before. While the book contains material of interest to the Renaissance specialist, its lucid style and the valuable background material it provides will appeal to undergraduates reading Spenser for the first time.

When Robyn enters the room and surprises her grandfather buttoning his Levies, Robyn's ensuing reactions cause Grandpa Josh to fall on his head and lose consciousness. After seeing Grandpa Josh fall, Debbie is too young and upset explain what happened.Robyn's mother, Joanne, supports Joshua's story that Debbie had spit up on him and he was only cleaning his pants. Robyn questions the explanation and sets out to find her biological grandmother and two of her aunts who have been banned from the family under a cloud of secrecy. Robyn's determined search leads her from San Antonio to Los Angeles to Paris.Robyn is the heartrending tale of a mother's gritty pursuit to unearth her family's secret past as she attempts to protect her young daughter from a potential child molester.Self-Publishing Review: Skipping between past and the present, it is an epic tale about how sexual abuse has affected people over generations ... Robyn is a fairly difficult book to read for its subject alone, but it is also a well-constructed book, evidently both a hugely painted and subtly drawn history of one family's tragic pastReviewed by F.T. Donereau The thread of the story involving Jo and her sisters left me astonished; it is so well done, with all its intricacies, all its fraught tensions carved out perfectly. I believe Mr. Stott, as an artist, has no fear. ... he not only shone light on truth, he gave us a story worth telling, worth knowing, and helped us learn.Cover Graphics by MSVisuals
