Dialogues on Minds, Machines, and AI invites readers into a series of thought-provoking debates among three college seniors bound for graduate school: Sue, completing her double major in philosophy and cognitive science; John, a computer engineering specialist; and Amy, a psychology major. Through five engaging lunchtime conversations, these students bring their diverse perspectives to fundamental questions about consciousness, artificial intelligence, and the nature of mind. The dialogues seamlessly blend discussions of popular science fiction films with critical examinations of recent AI developments, including ChatGPT, deep fakes, and other emerging technologies. Readers will explore foundational concepts at the intersection of human consciousness and machine learning: Alan Turing's influential "imitation game," John Searle's provocative "Chinese room argument," computational theories of mind, robot creativity, and the modularity of mind hypothesis. Rather than advocating for any particular viewpoint, these conversations illuminate the strengths, weaknesses, and implications of each perspective. Perfect for undergraduate students and curious minds from all backgrounds, this accessible introduction to cognitive science requires no prior knowledge of philosophy or technical subjects. The book includes a comprehensive glossary and thoughtful study questions to enhance understanding, while a carefully curated bibliography enables readers to explore specific topics in greater depth.

Consilience, Truth and the Mind of God

Consilience, Truth and the Mind of God

Richard J. Di Rocco

This book argues that God can be found within the edifice of the scientific understanding of physics, cosmology, biology and philosophy. It is a rewarding read that asks the Big Questions which humans have pondered since the dawn of the modern human mind, including: Why and how does the universe exist? From where do the laws of physics come? How did life and mind arise from inanimate matter on Earth? Science and religion have a common interest in the answers to such questions, yet many scientists and believers have been at odds for centuries. The author and contributors present a program for moving beyond the vastly different perspectives of reality offered by science and religion. Historical proofs for the existence of God are considered in light of the possibility that the universe may be only one in an eternal multiverse that contains an infinite number of other universes. Readers will find a modification of St. Augustine’s Argument from Truth for the existence of the necessary, self-sufficient being commonly referred to as God. This book is suited to all with an interest in the crossing points of science and religion, providing much food for thought and reflection. If in the end, you cannot accede to philosophy’s proofs, or theism’s invitation to faith, perhaps you will nevertheless say ‘yes’ to the amazing universe in which we live.

Epilepsy surgery is defined as any neurosurgical intervention whose pri- mary objective is to relieve medically intractable epilepsy (European Fed- eration of Neurological Societies Task Force 2000). The aim of epilepsy surgery is to reduce the number and intensity of seizures, minimise neuro- logical morbidity and antiepileptic drug (AED) toxicity, and improve quality of life. By definition, epilepsy surgery does not include normal surgical treatment of intracranial lesions where the primary goal is to di- agnose and possibly remove the pathological target, often an advancing tumour. In these patients, epileptic seizures are only one symptom of the lesion and will be treated concomitantly as part of the procedure. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is recognised as the most common type of refractory, focal epilepsy. In one third of all cases the neuronal systems responsible for the seizures that characterise this form of epilepsy fail to respond to currently available AEDs (Andermann F 2002). New imaging methods, especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), identify localising abnormalities in an increasing proportion of patients with intractable focal epilepsy. Consequently, the accuracy of the preoperative diagnostic pro- cedures has been significantly improved during the last decade; and suit- able candidates for surgery can be selected more reliably. Currently the main resources in most epilepsy surgery centres have been used to evaluate candidates for TLE surgery.
