Microcosmia pursues offbeat protagonist Cristian Vane, an emotionally troubled young liberal who's just come into the staggering Vane fortune. With his newfound wealth and responsibility, Vane sets out to put his cosseted life back together, but a series of gut-wrenching misadventures in the real world produce a complete nervous breakdown. The young heir surfaces with a fresh perspective: wealth is wasted on the wealthy; his bequest is a golden opportunity to do something magnificent in a heartless world. Sickened by a documentary featuring scammed Ethiopian famine victims, he sets off for Africa to build his utopia. Though Vane's misplaced magnanimity results in East-West friction and internal rivalries, he still manages to create his magnum opus, even as cutthroat pirates, a vile Eritrean colonel, and a doomed affair with a gorgeous, control-freak journalist push him over the edge. The tale concludes with an overwhelming assault by the Eritrean Army during the mother of all desert locust plagues.

A feast for readers with warped imaginations and high expectations. A haunted butchering under a full West Virginian moon. A vigilante superhero with a penchant for torture and due pontification. A tender tale of senior abuse and love's salvation. And more. Nothing shallow here, nothing trite. No lifeguards on duty, no buddies permitted, no water wings allowed.

Kevin Mikolajczyk, a slow and loveless Santa Monica teenager, ran away from home in 1967 to meet Haight-Ashbury's burgeoning Summer of Love. Along the way he lost his friends, his virginity, and his focus. Of greater importance, he lost his heart to a pretty, manipulative psychopath who used, abused, and dumped him at the first opportunity. Kevin, a profound epileptic, reached the fabled City and, after surfacing from a series of grand mals, was robbed, raped, and brutalized prior to being shanghaied by a busload of marauding Jesus Freaks. A must-read for all liberals, truth seekers, and species apologists in general.

The majority of people today avoid the book of Revelation, saying it is hard if not impossible to understand. We might ask if this is the case, why would a God who has revealed Himself to man and wants us to understand His ways, allow such a book to have been written and preserved through the ages? It is true that Revelation is a difficult book and takes effort to understand, but it is also true that it is understandable to those who make an effort. To those who will make an effort, God even pronounces a blessing. Hopefully this book will help many to better understand this final book and capstone of God's cannon of His revealed truth for us. It is the goal of this writing to present an account true to scripture that is understandable to the lay reader.

If you have a loved one on a breathing machine, this book is a must-read. Read this book if you are a non-medical person and want to know about mechanical ventilators, patients on breathing machines, or respirators. It makes sense of a critical situation in a medical environment that is "foreign" to nearly everyone. This book is written by a respiratory therapist to help the average person understand more about ventilators and the ICU environment. Mechanical ventilators are life support breathing machines or respirators that are used in ICU to keep people breathing and help them stay alive while their life threatening problems are being reversed. When loved ones are on ventilators it is a crisis that few understand. The first chapter is a quick reference with FAQs addressing most of the questions that might come to mind. These questions are organized to refer to the remainder of the book which explains in lay person's terms the details and complexities of ventilator patients from the initial respiratory failure, to placement on a ventilator, ventilator patient management, weaning off the ventilator and how ventilators are used for specific diseases that result in the need for life support. This book makes plain language out of normal respiratory anatomy and physiology, why people stop breathing, how COVID-19 ventilator patients are being treated, and discusses practical issues of life, death, and brain death. Simple but informative diagrams and pictures make clear medical information passed on to family members or significant others by doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists. There are parts of the book that get complicated because this is a complex situation. If the reader has trouble with some of the explanations just skip on over it as each chapter is a new part of this process and may provide understanding to previous topics. This book is recommended for everyone who has the circumstance of having someone they know on a breathing machine. This is not a medical text, but could easily have value to respiratory therapists, nurses and doctors in the ICU.

The role of Evangelical Christianity in American public life is controversial. The mythology of America as a ""Christian nation"" and the promissory note of secularism have proved inadequate to cope with the increasing pluralism, the resilience of spirituality, and the wariness toward formal religion that mark our post-secular age. Christianity and democracy have a complex history together, but is there a future where these two great traditions draw the best out of one another? What does that future look like in a heterogeneous society? Sanders argues that democracy is stronger when it allows all of its religious citizens to participate fully in the public sphere, and Christianity is richer when it demonstrates the wisdom of God from the ground up, rather than legislating it from the top down. In this reality, the Evangelical church must return to Christianity's prophetic roots and see itself as a ""community in exile,"" where participation in the political is important, but not ultimate--where the substantive work of the church happens ""after the election."" ""Ron Sanders', After the Election, is an extraordinary book, filled with sound analysis, charitable engagement, and wisdom . . . Religious discourse needs the pressure of the democratic concern for every citizen, and our democratic processes need the 'thicker' ethics that religious life provides. This book is the place to start in order to think well about religion and politics."" --Gregory E. Ganssle, Professor of Philosophy, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University ""After the Election is a timely and wise book that reminds us why we need both democracy and Christianity rather than choose one over against the other, for the wellbeing of the republic. I strongly recommend this book to those who care about the future of democracy and the credibility of Christianity in the United States."" --Hak Joon Lee, Professor of Christian Ethics, Fuller Theological Seminary ""I saw the beginnings of this masterful work by Sanders years ago, as it was in its nascent stages. The fact that it speaks to our contemporary situation with keen insight, and academic rigor is a testament to the author's brilliance . . .This text is a timely engagement with political philosophy, and theological ethics that is robust enough for graduate students, but written in such a way that it is accessible to a broad audience of lifelong learners."" -- Reggie L. Williams, Associate Professor of Christian Ethics, McCormick Theological Seminary Ron Sanders is an Affiliate Faculty in Christian Ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary. His research is focused on the intersection of Christianity and American public policy. He teaches courses on Christian ethics, faith and politics, and biblical and practical peacemaking. He has also served as a campus minister at Stanford University for seventeen years, where he has been an active member of the religious life on campus.

The Aurykon Chronicles, Books 1 to 5, is a contemporary American tale about a northern Californian teenager, Mack Thomas. He undertakes a fantastic five-year journey that transforms, imperils, and matures him.Through conversations with Pappy, his wise old grandfather and mentor, Mack discovers the truth about the causes of danger in the world--government corruption, banking fraud, excessive military intervention, insurmountable debt, eroding freedom and democracy, corruption of our monetary systems, failing social programs, and a frightening rise of tyranny. He learns why it will all inevitably collapse in the worst geopolitical and macroeconomic conflagration in human history.Mack struggles with his grandfather's dystopian predictions about the fate of America. Despite Pappy's logic, he thinks the old guy is crazy. Financial collapse and severe depression? The end of democracy and personal liberty? The rise of totalitarianism? The fall of the Empire? Nuclear war?Surely not. This is a speculative fiction story in which Mack secretly raises an orphaned infant alien, Aurykon, in Mendocino County wilderness. This inter-dimensional being proves to be a challenging handful for a naive, young, single parent. You see, after five years in Mack's care, Aurykon matures to a super-intelligent, super-powerful, and super-large individual. He stands twenty feet tall, is bulletproof, breathes fire, and has a forty-foot wingspan. Yes, Aurykon is a magnificent, golden-tinged dragon ... and he's not yet fully grown.Mack and Aurykon are inseparable best friends. That's fortunate, for when they cross to an alternate dimension to return the dragon to his original home, the planet Shukra, the humans there have driven geopolitical and macroeconomic affairs to the brink of catastrophe--a most dangerous place. Mack witnesses and nearly succumbs to the inevitable consequences of the same human greed and profligacy that plague Earth. Pappy's predictions prove plausible.Fear not, during his travels Mack encounters Princess Bibianna. Although this royal beauty is supposedly unobtainable, she ultimately makes all his troubles worthwhile. The Aurykon Chronicles weaves elements of factual circumstances with a genre mix of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and coming-of-age. The tale's underlying premise (political and economic irresponsibility of governments, corporations, and elite individuals) enlightens new adult readers while entertaining them with a rollercoaster hero's journey. The story is a series of five novella-sized "Books," each being a phase of Mack and Aurykon's awesome tale of discovery: Book 1: California DragonBook 2: Mendocino MayhemBook 3: Minaurian ExploitsBook 4: Desperate MeasuresBook 5: The Gauld WarThrough this exciting compilation, you discover the dark truth about the real world, while joining Mack and his dragon pal on a fantastic intergalactic voyage.

"Serling's complex life was very like an extended episode of The Twilight Zone, and Gordon F. Sander uniquely captures all the twists and ironies of a talented man struggling against the conventions of society and the insecurities of self. Sander's haunting portrait is of a writer indeed caught between light and shadow."—from the Foreword by Ron Simon "Sander has fashioned a vivid and fascinating portrait of this complex innovator from television's Golden Age."—Library Journal "The story of Serling's career doubles as a history of the television industry itself, and Sander vividly depicts the heady early days of live TV, when the highest artistic achievement seemed attainable. Highly recommended."—Booklist "Sander's strong, straightforward portrait of Serling as an industry goad who confronted his corporate bosses forms the most unexpected and powerful part of the book. Rod Serling merited this fine book."—Philadelphia Inquirer Gordon F. Sander's acclaimed biography of Rod Serling is at once a portrait of a prodigiously talented writer and a history of the first-quarter century of television. A former paratrooper in World War II, Serling rose to fame in the 1950s with his hard-hitting plays Patterns and Requiem for a Heavyweight during the "golden age" of live television in New York City. In 1959, excited by the prospect of writing and producing his own dramatic anthology show, the angry young man of television followed his fortune—and the burgeoning video medium—to Hollywood. Serling's anthology show, of course, was the landmark The Twilight Zone. Still considered one of the greatest television shows ever produced, Serling's surreal video showcase ran for five seasons, adding to Serling's record clutch of Emmys, and continues to be a cult favorite today. Meanwhile Serling also tried his hand at writing for movies, turning out the screenplays for Seven Days in May and Planet of the Apes before his death in 1975 at age fifty. Sander's historical biography—for which he interviewed more than two hundred of Serling's friends, family members, and colleagues, including Robert Redford, Sydney Pollack, Kim Hunter, and William Shatner—follows the video bard's odyssey from Binghamton, the small upstate city that served as the template for some of the best-remembered episodes of The Twilight Zone to his searing and equally influential wartime experiences in the South Pacific; from his apprenticeship as a Midwestern radio and television writer to his successes in New York and Hollywood, before he himself was consumed by the commercialism of the medium he had helped create.

Rabbit medicine is a rapidly expanding area of veterinary practice and rabbits are now the third most popular mammalian pet in the UK. Vets are treating more sick rabbits than ever before, but many vets do not have the clinical experience required to give effective treatment. There is a wealth of information on rabbits available to vets, but much of this is from the laboratory animal field and often isn't applicable to the pet rabbit. Filling a gap in current literature available on rabbits, this book provides the reader with essential information and guidance on rabbit internal medicine ensuring rabbits are treated to the same standard as canine and feline patients. Along with the other books in the Notes on series, it is specifically designed, through an accessible note-based style, to ensure veterinarians and students have quick and easy access to the most up-to-date clinical and diagnostic information. This book provides: Differential diagnosis, by presenting complaint and organ systemsCommon laboratory abnormalities and their significance in diagnosisInfectious diseases, their diagnosis and treatmentTherapeutics, and how treatment varies from that of the more commonly encountered companion animals
