Electoral Systems and the Balance of Consumer-Producer Power

Electoral Systems and the Balance of Consumer-Producer Power

Eric C. C. Chang; Mark Andreas Kayser; Drew A. Linzer; Ronald Rogowski

Cambridge University Press

This book investigates the effects of electoral systems on the relative legislative and, hence, regulatory influence of competing interests in society. Building on Ronald Rogowski and Mark Andreas Kayser's extension of the classic Stigler–Peltzman model of regulation, the authors demonstrate that majoritarian electoral arrangements should empower consumers relative to producers. Employing real price levels as a proxy for consumer power, the book rigorously establishes this proposition over time, within the OECD, and across a large sample of developing countries. Majoritarian electoral arrangements depress real prices by approximately ten percent, all else equal. The authors carefully construct and test their argument and broaden it to consider the overall welfare effects of electoral system design and the incentives of actors in the choice of electoral institutions.

The book functions as a guided tour through the creative process that fuels a lifelong experimental music composer. It sheds light on the compositional processes and the physical settings of the six new CDs that make up Part Three of the Emergent Music And Visual Music: Inside Studies project. Detailed program notes for every track open windows to forces that generated the music. The book also provides program notes for two more CDs of music made public for the first time, Volumes 1 and 2 of Music for The Electronic Arts Of Sound And Light (1983), a book considered by academics and professionals as a classic in the field. Associated with the notes for each of the eight CDs are essays that thematically set the conceptual stage for the music on that particular CD. The book also includes a section of special historical interest titled "Being Johnny MusicMeme", a section that features posters, programs, photos, reviews, articles, and interviews from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s connected with Pellegrino's work. Electronic arts pioneer Ron Pellegrino is a composer, performer, visual artist, researcher, and author of numerous articles and three earlier groundbreaking books-An Electronic Studio Manual (1969), the first published book on the modern electronic music synthesizer, The Electronic Arts Of Sound And Light (1983), the first published book on integrated electronic technology in the arts, and Emergent Music And Visual Music: Inside Studies (2009), the first published book on the integration of algorithmic composition and visual music. This book and the other parts (another book, 4 DVDs, and 6 CDs) of the Emergent Music And Visual Music: Inside Studies project are based on his research, composition, and performance experiences, both solo and in collaboration with hundreds of performance artists, in over 1,000 public events at art and science museums, cultural centers, and universities since the late 1960s in North America, Europe, and South America.

When was the last time you have taken a few moments and paid close attention to what is going on in America? Have you noticed how fast this once great nation is fallen? When will the decline stop? We are going through the worst economic decline since "The Great Depression", the unemployment rate is the highest it has been in over twenty years, and the national deficit is at 14 trillion dollars and climbing every second. If none of this has affected you or someone in your family, how long will it be before it does? We are all only a crisis away from being included in the 3 million foreclosures (as of 2010), or the 15 million unemployed (as of 2010). Why is the federal government playing such a major role in our daily lives, when they can't seem to keep their own house in order? With the collapse of the economy and so many out of work, home invasions/robberies have skyrocketed. Are you prepared? I'm hoping that the information in this book can help you get prepared. If nothing else, open the eyes and minds of the millions that are totally oblivious to any of what I just mentioned.
