Ruby's Prayer

Ruby's Prayer

Ronald H. Keyser

Defiance Press

The years following the American Civil War propelled the great state of Texas into a bold future through a rush of expansionism. Much of this industrious activity was made possible by the ever-increasing reach of the railroads and, in Texas, great stretches of track were laid down and paid for with the lives of prisoners having little hope of ever escaping the state penal system. Ruby's Prayer is the story of the Texas-based Wallace family during the spring of 1880. The family is recovering from the wounds of the Civil War, including the loss of their mother, son Tom Wallace's inhuman incarceration, and sibling rivalries and double-dealings, all while enmeshed in the intrigues of political, monetary and personal ambitions. Full of colorful characters both likable and despicable, Ruby's Prayer reveals the hopes, loves and trials of an American family struggling to find their way during the tumultuous emergence of the Industrial Age and the final days of the Wild West.
John Wesley's Life & Ethics / Ronald H. Stone.
John Wesley s Life & Ethics offers a comprehensive analysis of John Wesley s personal and social ethical thought. Ronald Stone places Wesley in a social location and examines his ethical thought biographically. He argues that in the case of John Wesley, the Christian traditions provide a biblically informed deontological ethic of love. This ethic is grounded in the Christian community to form the individual and in social reform to transform the nation within the limits of Christian realism concerning human nature and social order. The volume covers Wesley s complete ethical reflection and teaching and, at appropriate points, places them in comparative perspective to other 18th century ethics and social thought contributors. Ethical topics addressed include abortion, vocation, family, money, social nature of humanity, politics, economics, imperial relations, and war and peace. This book will be a supplementary text in Ethics classes, primarily in United Methodist schools. It will also be a useful text in Methodist history classes. Methodist scholars and pastors interested in a social biography of Wesley will want to own this book."

The Ideas of Ronald H. Coase

Lawrence W. C Lai

This book is the first work dedicated to the key ideas of Nobel Laureate Ronald Coase on pollution and public goods with sustainable development in mind from the perspective of an economist-town planner. The seminal contributions of Ronald Coase, foretold in the form of the Coase Theorem by another Nobel laureate, George Stigler, have been much analyzed and often misinterpreted by friends and foes alike. In this book, Lawrence Lai attempts to revisit Coase's seminal works and bring to the fore their importance in economic and urban planning policy analysis. Coase's comparative institutional approach offers an important vehicle for the analysis of pressing social issues such as sustainable development, and all those interested in the creation of new platforms for performing policy analysis will welcome this important work.

Ronald H. Coase, one of the most innovative and provocative economists of the twentieth century, has had a lasting influence in economics, law and economics, organization theory, management and political science. In this comprehensive Companion, 31 leading economists, social scientists and legal scholars, including two Nobel Laureates, offer the first global assessment of the initial impact of Coase's work and the continuing inspiration that researchers and policy makers find in his contributions. The book presents a review of the continuing power of Coase's work, including the reshaping of public policies with particular respect to public utilities and network industries. Further chapters explore research programmes that he initiated including the concept of transaction costs and the analysis of property rights, especially in terms of the regulation of the communications industry and the creation of markets for the right to pollute. The book clearly demonstrates the originality of Coase's work and the challenge that it posed to conventional perspectives which has been a hallmark of his research throughout his life, from his initial view on the nature of the firm to his recent analysis of the development of capitalism in China. Less well-known features of Coase's research going beyond his famous papers on 'The Nature of the Firm' and 'The Problem of Social Cost' are also explored in detail. From economics to public policy, this complete and thorough assessment of Coase's vast contribution will be an invaluable reference to all those interested in the many areas influenced by this great economist.Contributors: D.W. New Perspectives on the Economics of Ronald H. Coase
Ronald Coase is widely recognised as one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. In this new volume, Matthias Klaes argues that Coase is a self-styled disciplinary renegade, whose aim for the past four decades has been to re-orient the shape and practice of modern economics. This book will provide an account of the alternative economics present in Coase's work, offering a balanced analysis of the full breadth of his writings over eight decades. The book starts by introducing the reader to the key features of late 19th century neoclassical economics, in particular as it emerged through the Marshallian and Austrian traditions, and as it was taken up in applied fields such as commerce and business studies. Building on these conceptual roots, it will offer the reader an analytical reconstruction of Coase's work as a strand of modern historical economics presently not properly recognised or acknowledged as such in the discipline, taking the full corpus of Coase's writings into account. This contemporary history of economic thought perspective on Coase's work will offer the basis for four policy case studies. These will illustrate how the analytical framework of historical economics thus recovered from Coase's work can be applied to the economics of intellectual property rights, the political economy of Europen Monetary Union, the economic governance of carbon trading, and Chinese economic reform. The book also explores the issue of the value and relevance of the history of economics to economic analysis and its applications, and the book as a whole will serve as a demonstration of a possible answer to that question.
Analyse des Artikels "The Nature of the Firm von Ronald H. Coase
Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich BWL - Sonstiges, Note: 2, Fachhochschule Salzburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Ronald Coase hat im Laufe seines Lebens Artikel verfasst, welche das wirtschaftliche Denken bis heute beeinflussen. Die bekanntesten sind "The nature of the Firm" (1937) und "The Problem of social Costs" (1960).

At War at Sea: Sailors and Naval Combat in the Twentieth Century
Beginning with a gripping account of one of the most decisive naval battles in history-the 1905 battle of Tsushima between the Japanese and Russians-and ending with the sophisticated missile engagements of the Falklands and in the Persian Gulf, naval historian Ronald Spector explores every facet of the past one hundred years of naval warfare. Drawing from more than one hundred diaries, memoirs, letters, and interviews, this is, above all, a masterful narrative of the human side of combat at sea-real stories told from the point of view of the sailors who experienced it. Exhaustively researched and fascinating in detail, At War at Sea is a monumental history of the men, the ships, and the battles fought on the high seas. "Superb . . . Spector's account provides evocative and fresh perspectives on cultures, technologies and innovations that influenced sailors' lives and shaped naval warfare." (The San Diego Union-Tribune) "Monumental . . . Many books have recorded the history of the United States Navy, but few have meshed that history with that of all other major navies-an unusual comparative technique that brings into often startling relief the virtues and flaws of our own navy." (The Washington Post)"

Involuntary clients are required to see a professional, such as juveniles on probation, or are pressured to seek help, such as alcoholics threatened with the desertion of a spouse. For close to two decades, Strategies for Work with Involuntary Clients has led in its honest analysis of the involuntary transaction, suggesting the kind of effective legal and ethical intervention that can lead to more cooperative encounters, successful contracts, and less burnout on both sides of the treatment relationship. For this second edition, Ronald H. Rooney has invited experts to address recent theories and provide new information on the best practices for specific populations and settings. He also adds practical examples and questions to each chapter to better facilitate the involvement of students and readers, plus a section on motivational interviewing.

Staging O`Neill

Staging O`Neill

Ronald H. Wainscott

Yale University Press

Eugene O’Neill’s most exciting experiments with stage direction and design took place in his plays produced between 1920 and 1934. The impact of these experiments on American theater and drama was enormous, and in this book Ronald H. Wainscott critically examines the staging of these innovative works. Beginning with the first professional production of a new O’Neill play, Beyond the Horizon, and concluding with Days Without End, Wainscott recreates the initial performances of twenty-two works, including The Emperor Jones, Anna Christie, The Hairy Ape, and Mourning Becomes Electra. Using a wide range of unpublished material including prompt books, ground plans, design elevations, publicity materials, letters, and manuscript notes, Wainscott provides fascinating details about the production of these plays. He discusses their preproduction histories; how the actors, designers, directors, and theaters were selected; the design of plays, including set, costumes, lighting, music, and sound; the director’s work; the acting; and the critical response. He analyzes how the various artists approached stage composition and use of the performance space, as well as techniques and devices such as masks, sound effects, music, simultaneous settings, internal monologues, and split characterizations. Revealing a great deal about O’Neill’s relationships with directors—most notably Robert Edmond Jones and Philip Moeller—Wainscott demonstrates that the era was a maturation period not only for American playwriting but also for American directing and design. “A wonderful book, the best of the recent studies of O’Neill and a remarkable work of theater history. What Wainscott has to tell is important not only to those generally interested in O’Neill and in theater history, but to actors, designers, and directors as well.” –Travis Bogard, University of California, Berkeley

Life's Ultimate Questions synthesizes three distinct approaches—topical, historical, and conceptual—to help students gain breadth and depth of perspective on key philosophical concepts.Introductions to philosophy typically focus on one of three tracts to presenting philosophical ideas: topical, historical, or conceptual. Life's Ultimate Questions takes a unique approach and synthesizes all three to ensure students gain both breadth and depth of perspective, ensuring a more engaging experience for students who may feel overwhelmed by philosophy's ultimate questions. Now thoroughly revised and updated by Nash's former student Thor Madsen, this newest edition of Life's Ultimate Questions retains the book's multipronged approach and accessible tone. Madsen has greatly expanded the discussions on epistemology, the nature and existence of God, humanity, and ethics and added brand-new chapters on logic and pantheistic monism, along with a section on Reformed epistemology. New and improved graphics throughout further enable the book to meet the needs of today's classroom for both instructors and students.Unique and thorough, Life's Ultimate Questions invites students to pursue the "love of wisdom," in a thought-provoking and engaging text useful for formal students and lay learners alike.
When a Baby Dies

When a Baby Dies

“Is my baby with God now?” What does the Bible say to such a question? What hope does it offer parents grieving the loss of a precious child? The answers are merciful. However, the implications are not simple. Is God a Universalist? Is there salvation after death? What is the role of infant baptism? And what about the doctrine of depravity? If a baby is born into sin, then what? What happens to the unborn -- to the miscarried and the aborted? For pastors looking for biblical grounds to offer comfort and assurance, and for parents seeking solace for their grief, When a Baby Dies offers insights that are rich in hope and grounded solidly in Scripture.
