Walter F. White of Atlanta, Georgia, joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1918 as an assistant to Executive Secretary James Weldon Johnson. When Johnson retired in 1929, White replaced him as head of the NAACP, a position he maintained until his death in 1955. During his long tenure, White was in the vanguard of the struggle for interracial justice. His reputation went into decline, however, in the era of grassroots activism that followed his death. White’s disagreements with the US Left, and his ambiguous racial background—he was of mixed heritage, could “pass” as white, and divorced a black woman to marry a white woman—fueled ambivalence about his legacy. In this comprehensive biography, Zangrando and Lewis seek to provide a reassessment of White within the context of his own time, revising critical interpretations of his career. White was a promoter of and a participant in the Harlem Renaissance, a daily fixture in the halls of Congress lobbying for civil rights legislation, and a powerful figure with access to the administrations of Roosevelt (via Eleanor) and Truman. As executive secretary of the NAACP, White fought incessantly to desegregate the American military and pushed to ensure equal employment opportunities. On the international stage, White advocated for people of color in a decolonized world, and for economic development aid to nations like India and Haiti, bridging the civil rights struggles at home and abroad.

Political Attitudes Over the Life Span

Political Attitudes Over the Life Span

The culmination of one of the most famous long-term studies in American sociology, this examination of political attitudes among women who attended Bennington College in the 1930s and 1940s now spans five decades, from late adolescence to old age. Theodore Newcomb s 1930s interviews at Bennington, where the faculty held progressive views that contrasted with those of the conservative families of the students, showed that political orientations are still quite malleable in early adulthood. The studies in 1959-60 and 1984 show the persistence of political attitudes over the adult life span: the Bennington women, raised in conservative homes, were liberalized in their college years and have remained politically involved and liberal in their views, even in their sixties and seventies. Here the authors analyze the earlier studies and then introduce the 1984 data. Using data from National Election Studies for comparison, they show that the Bennington group is more liberal and hold its opinions more intensely than both older and younger Americans, with the exception of the generation that achieved political maturity in the 1960s. The authors point out that the majority of the Bennington women s children are of this 1945 54 generation and suggest that this factor played an important role in the stability of the women s political views. Within their own generation, the Bennington women also appear to hold stronger political views than other college-educated women. Innovative in its methodology and extremely rich in its data, this work will contribute to developmental and social psychology, sociology, political science, women s studies, and gerontology."
The Oxford Handbook of Prosecutors and Prosecution

The Oxford Handbook of Prosecutors and Prosecution

The power of the modern prosecutor arises from several features of the criminal justice landscape: widespread use of law and order political rhetoric and heightened fear of crime among voters; legislatures' embrace of extreme sentencing ranges to respond to such concerns; and the uncertain or limited accountability of prosecutors to the electorate, the bar, or other political and professional constituencies. The convergence of these trends has transformed prosecution into an indispensable field of study. This volume brings together the work of leading international scholars across criminology, sociology, political science, and law - along with contributions from reform-minded practitioners - to examine a variety of issues in prosecutorial behaviour and the institutional structures that frame their behavior. The Handbook connects the dots among existing theoretical and empirical research related to prosecutors. Major sections of the volume cover (1) prosecutor performance during distinct phases of a criminal case, (2) the features of the prosecutor's environment, both inside the office and external to the office, that influence the choices of individual prosecutors and office leaders, and (3) prosecutorial strategies and priorities when dealing with specialized types of crimes, victims, and defendants. Taken together, the chapters in this volume identify the founding texts, discuss leading theoretical and methodological approaches, explain the scope of unresolved issues, and preview where this field is headed. The volume provides a bottom-up view of an important new scholarly field.

Coagulation and flocculation are the basis of water treatment, for the separation of solid-liquid mixtures, as well as a means to reduce turbidity, and in the present investigation, the effect of the applied speed and dose of aluminum sulfate Al2 (SO4)3, as well as that exerted by the ferric chloride FeCl3-flocculant, was evaluated. To obtain the experimental data, a "Jar Test" equipment was used, carrying out tests at 06 levels of applied dose (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 mL), and at 05 levels of agitation speed (100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 r.p.m.). The results report that the best conditions, with Aluminum Sulfate, were achieved with a dose of 120 mg/L and at a speed of 100 r.p.m. of fast mixing and 25 r.p.m. of slow mixing, decreasing the initial color from 213 UPC to 10 UPC, an initial turbidity from 66.6 to 1.1 UNT, an initial concentration of Fe (II) from 1.37 to 0.05 mg/L and a decrease in pH from 6.6 to 4.20.

Although linguistics is often a technical and increasingly abstruse discipline, many linguists retain a concern for the way in which linguistics can shed light on literature and literary problems. In their introductory chapter, the editors of this collection of essays, by linguists on either side of the Atlantic, enunciate a bold stance that defines the theoretical relationship between linguistics and literature, delimits what should be considered a linguistic analysis of literature, and explains how such an analysis is related to current theories of readership and literary criticism. The editors’ theory of the relationship between linguistic and literary studies stipulates an eclectic rather than a holistic approach, and the essays they have gathered together reflect this belief. The contributions include such varied approaches as transformational grammar, text grammar and speech act theory, and the topics analysed include many that are at the heart of literature, such as topicalization, imagery, figurative language, ambiguity, and the play on words through puns. The anthology as a whole illustrates how linguistic theory illuminates the very nature of literary language. It also gives evidence of the new insights into literature that have arisen from a close analysis of the language in which the literature is encoded.

It is now more than twenty years since a proposal was first mooted to hold an international tunnelling symposium in Britain. At the time of the first symposium, held in London in 1976, the Channel Tunnel pro ject had just been shelved. Last weekend a charity walk was held in the finished tunnel, which will be open for business later in the year. Tunnels have figured prominently, and at times spectacularly, in the development of national and international links and it is hoped that such links gather pace in the future. It is particularly pleasing that Alastair Biggart of Storebrelt has agreed to deliver the twenty-sixth Sir Julius Wernher Memorial Lecture of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, entitled 'The changing face of tunnelling', at the start of this event. * Although almost every edition of the technical journals on tunnelling reports another £1 billion scheme somewhere in the world, it would be unfair of me to suggest that tunnelling is restricted to these prestigious schemes for major transport links. Much of the work that makes mod ern life possible receives hardly a mention outside the technical press and one suspects that society at large applies the 'out of sight, out of mind' attitude even more readily to underground construction than it does to other forms of engineering. Clearly, there is a contiiming need to improve the capacity and performance of our infrastructure, while hav ing a careful regard for the environment.

For over 40 years the poetry of Ronald Judson has silently chronicled American life. Now only available in this exclusive collection, the truth and passion in his poems ring like a clarion call across the fruited plain. The body of his work is principally autobiographical, deeply personal and honest, and particularly poignant for those familiar with the baby boomer experience.
A Retrospective Look Volume II: The Artwork of R.L. Oliver
This book is a supplement to last year s Retrospective Perspectives, Volume I. It includes about thirty more pages andmany more illustrations with accompanying commentary. It has been divided into the major headings of ]The Garden], ]Trees], ]Abstracts] and ]Portraits] as these provide a meaningful description of the content in which I specialize. The reader needs to be aware that this work was done over a period of approximately twenty-five years but always on a sideline basis. Since retiring in 2014, I have concentrated on drawing and painting to the exclusion of any other work, so it is focused and more intense than when I first started to draw and paint. It is hoped that the reader enjoys the content. From the start, I have used drawing and painting as a way of calming down, concentrating and focusing on settling things around me. By calling them ]artwork] I could make them look as I wanted them to remain. I thought they should speak with my voice and say what I wanted to say. It came natural to me because that was what I wanted. It was just that simple. I still see things that way: there is the passing and there is the fixed. It seems like there was a basic need to draw, paint, and express what was inside. I could organize and put things together on paper or canvas that went together in no other way, at no other time. It was a way out of myself and I took it. At times, it was the best way to do things when was no other way.I was first inspired by a glossy photo-journal of the early sixties with photographs of Caroline Kennedy on top of a horse. They went together and it all made sense. Her father was highly esteemed but was later shot while riding a convertible in Dallas, but Caroline lives. It makes for a sad story but that is the way that many stories go. One lives and learns. When I later tried to ride a horse in imitation it ran to the middle of an interstate expressway and stopped in its tracks. I loved horses until I learned they were not all without fault. I found they had a will of their own that was often greater than that of the rider. Regardless, they were often better on paper than in real life. I started drawing with a pencil and charcoal but later graduated to oils paints, acrylics, pastels and finally watercolors. I saved the best for last.I still search for a permanent beauty, a harmony that may not be there otherwise, and a deep satisfaction when it comes out as I wanted it in the first place. It helps me to keep me away from feeling scattered and pointless, disorganized. Art was good therapy then and is good therapy now. The process still works. I would encourage anyone with the smallest well of desire or need to jump in the water, to get wet. It feels good, and the water is fine.Over the years, I have found that my pursuit of creating comes only in bursts and spells. There were times when I felt moved to do it. There were times when I had no desire at all. The desire, the passion usually happened only once or twice a year. At times, a drought would come when I mostly twiddled my thumbs and carried on. I never found a way to pursue this interest in the everyday world. Everyone knew that artists starved. Who wants to pursue a trail to starvation?I think this unfortunate state needs to change. The older I grew the greater was the desire to do images of people and things that mattered most. I think we are all drawn to what is most important in our lives. I hope you are ready to join me in looking back over sixty years of life in service to others in small towns, small cities and finally big cities. I hope you find it enjoyable.

One of the greatest living Italian-to-English translators, Robert Durling's rendition of the third and final volume of Dante's masterful literary epic is now available in paperback. As with the two preceding volumes, Durling's precise and powerful translation of Paradiso appears alongside the original Italian text recounting Dante's journey through heaven with the beautiful Beatrice. The end of each canto contains thorough yet succinct notes by Durling and Ronald Martinez that acquaint the reader with Dante's medieval world and his reference points. Thus the volume will appeal to the general reader as well as lovers and students of Italian literature, language, and history. While English-language translations of the Commedia abound, the accuracy and lyrical verve of Durling's translations have earned him a place as one of the all time greats.
The Craft of Ritual Studies

The Craft of Ritual Studies

Ronald L. Grimes

In religious studies, theory and method research has long been embroiled in a polarized debate over scientific versus theological perspectives. Ronald L. Grimes shows that this debate has stagnated, due in part to a manner of theorizing too far removed from the study of actual religious practices. A worthwhile theory, according to Grimes, must be practice-oriented, and practices are most effectively studied by field research methods. The Craft of Ritual Studies melds together a systematic theory and method capable of underwriting the cross-cultural, interdisciplinary study of ritual enactments. Grimes first exposes the limitations that disable many theories of ritual--for example, defining ritual as essentially religious, assuming that ritual's only function is to generate group solidarity, or treating ritual as a mirror of the status quo. He proposes strategies and offers guidelines for conducting field research on the public performance of rites, providing a guide for fieldwork on complex ritual enactments, particularly those characterized by social conflict or cultural creativity. The volume also provides a section on case study, focusing on a single complex event: the Santa Fe Fiesta, a New Mexico celebration marked by protracted ethnic conflict and ongoing dramatic creativity. Grimes explains how rites interact creatively and critically with their social surroundings, developing such themes as the relation of ritual to media, theater, and film, the dynamics of ritual creativity, the negotiation of ritual criticism, and the impact of ritual on cultural and physical environments. This important and influential book will be the capstone work of Grimes's three decades of leadership in the field of ritual studies. It is accompanied by twenty online appendices illustrating key aspects of ritual study.
