Describing drawing as her “primary activity,” for over thirty years Roni Horn (b. 1955) has created innovative and experimental works on paper marked by both conceptual and technical complexity. This carefully curated survey of the artist’s drawings from the early 1980s through 2016 explores works revolving around the mutability of identity and the fragility of place, time, and language; it also delves into Horn’s unique approach to mark-making and her process of cutting up and reassembling words and images. With sumptuous illustrations, this catalogue features an insightful look at and selected details of Horn’s large-scale—sometimes over ten feet tall—works on paper; the artist’s series of cadmium red drawings; and her cut-and-pasted word drawings that combine well-known literary texts by Gertrude Stein and William Shakespeare with colloquial expressions. This book is a captivating exploration of Horn s decades-long fascination with water, both as a material and a metaphor. Known for her provocative approach to perception, identity, and the mutability of form, Horn uses water to mirror human experience and emotion. Born in 1955 in New York, Horn has spent decades pushing the boundaries of art to explore the complexities of identity, perception, and nature. Horn s body of work spans photography, cast glass, and installation, consistently returning to the theme of fluidity. Her iconic series You Are the Weather 100 photographs of Icelandic artist Margret Haraldsdottir Blondal submerged in water reveals how water can both obscure and define identity. Similarly, her liquid glass sculptures play with the tension between solidity and fluidity, their colors ranging from turquoise to black. In an era marked by climate change and water scarcity, Horn s works pose urgent questions about water as a shared resource and a symbol of impermanence and survival. This volume not only offers a retrospective of her water-centered works but also connects them to broader global challenges with critical and poetic texts by Nora Burnett Abrams, Jarrett Earnest, Anne Carson, and the artist herself.

She explores the subject of changing identities using a wide variety of media, including photography, sculpture, installation, drawing and text. The artist plays with similarities and differences in photographic portraits in particular, sounding out the ambiguity of various human facial expressions. The face becomes a projection screen for an internal dialogue for the viewer.

In this collection of 120 black-and-white photos, Roni Horn takes us on a journey through a locker room in Reykjavik, Iceland. With minimal movement between the camera and subject in succeeding frames, and through the use of a slow-shutter technique, this finely crafted body of work provokes the viewer to contemplate the subtleties of each image. A blur behind a portal suggests that someone else is in the locker room with the viewer. Room numbers, open and closed doors, and intersecting hallways give clues to the surroundings, and as we turn each page of the book, we sense the subtle shifting of time and space in photographs that reflect a sculptor's attention to the details of surfaces, repetition, and form.
