Children often mix up the letters p, q and g when learning to read and write. This is common up to the age of 7 or 8 and also with children who have dyslexia. This is the story of a 'piggy' who wrote his name as 'qiggy' and the other animals laughed at him so he hides away in the forest and disguises himself. Then he makes a special friend, Chris the dinosaur. Chris has his own problems, and together they help each other to overcome their difficulties. The qiggy learns how to use the letters 'p' and 'g' correctly, and this is the beginning of his journey of self-discovery. This story will help children to recognise the letters p and g when reading, and to produce them correctly when writing, through repeated exposure to the shape and structure of the letters. The broader message of the story is that we can overcome frustrations and barriers through helping and supporting each other in life.
Colin lives in the sky with his mum and dad. He comes down to Earth to meet other animals and to make friends, but because he is different to them, he is rejected. Colin feels sad and alone, and he is about to return to his cloud home in the sky when he meets a raccoon who needs his help. Colin learns that being different can be an advantage, and he sets off on a quest to help the animals in the Kingdom over the Mountains. Can he help to stop the animals fighting each other and bring everyone together? Find out in this inspiring story of self-discovery and acceptance.
This is the enchanting story of a little girl who discovers a magical chrysalis in the forest. The chrysalis helps her to write to Santa to make her dreams come true on Christmas Day. The story will appeal to all young children, especially those who sometimes have difficulties with mixing up their letters, and it will encourage them to reach out for help and support to overcome frustrations and barriers in life.

This stunning new volume is the first accessibly written, illustrated, English-language biography of Rosalba Carriera, one of the most famous women artists in eighteenth-century Europe. Born in Venice in 1673 to a lawyer and a lace maker, Rosalba Carriera began her career painting decorative objects and rose to international renown as a portraitist in Italy, Germany, France, and England. In 1757 she died nearly blind from cataracts, a tragic end for a painter acclaimed for exquisite miniatures and innovative pastels. During the 1700s she was deemed "the most talented female artist of our century," so famous that she was referred to by her first name only. Today, however, she is little known outside Venice, despite the attribution to her of more than seven hundred surviving artworks. This accessibly written, gorgeously illustrated biography surveys Carriera's career, considering her miniatures alongside better-known works of larger scale. Interpreting her oeuvre against the historical context of her experience as a single woman in Venice, the book takes readers through the full arc of her life, including the people she met, her clients, and her artistic approach. Author Angela Oberer's original iconographic analysis of some of Carriera's work reveals that she was an erudite painter who drew on antiquity as well as Renaissance precedents such as Leonardo da Vinci and Paolo Veronese. Published in conjunction with the 350th anniversary of her birth, this book is a long overdue tribute to an important and prolific artist.

This pastel belongs to a small number of works of art at the Frick by a female artist. Rosalba Carriera (Italian, 1673 1757) spent most of her life in Venice, then a popular destination for young aristocrats from all over Europe undertaking the Grand Tour-a tour of the continent that served as an educational rite of passage into adulthood. Many of these travelers would go to Rosalba's studio to have a portrait painted, and Rosalba, who began her career as a miniaturist painter in Venice, became internationally acclaimed. Rosalba's pastels are technically innovative, remarkable for their soft edges and sumptuous effects. By binding colored chalk into sticks, she obtained a much wider range of prepared colors, which ultimately expanded the visual possibilities of this medium. Little is known about this portrait, painted about 1730. Despite the fragility of the medium-pastel-it is in pristine condition. The portrayal of the man as a pilgrim, with a black cape and holding a staff, may indicate that he was a member of the Pellegrini family-pellegrini being the Italian word for pilgrims-or that he is someone who traveled on a pilgrimage. More likely, however, his attire is simply a costume related to the Venetian Carnival. Designed to foster critical engagement and interest specialist and non-specialist alike, each book in the Frick Diptych series illuminates a single work in the Frick's rich collection with an essay by a Frick curator paired with a contribution from a contemporary artist or writer. AUTHORS: Born in Lausanne in 1980, Nicolas Party is a figurative painter who has achieved critical admiration for his familiar yet unsettling landscapes, portraits, and still lifes that simultaneously celebrate and challenge conventions of representational painting. His works are primarily created in soft pastel, an idiosyncratic choice of medium in the 21st-century, and one that allows for exceptional degrees of intensity and fluidity in his depictions of objects both natural and manmade. Xavier F. Salomon is deputy director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator, The Frick Collection, New York. SELLING POINTS: . New volume in the best selling Frick Diptych series that began with Holbein's Sir Thomas More by Hilary Mantel . Die bekannteste Pastellmalerin des 18. Jahrhunderts, Rosalba Carriera, feiert im Jahr 2023 ihren 350. Geburtstag.

2023 marks the 350th anniversary of the birth of Rosalba Carriera, the most famous pastel painter of the 18th century. Dresden surpasses even Venice, the artist's hometown, as the place where visitors can best admire her work. For it was here, in the Gemaldegalerie that opened in 1746, that a total of 157 of her pastels went on display in what was known as the "Cabinet of Rosalba." This book traces the history of this unique collection and presents the 73 pastels remaining in Dresden today - still the world's largest collection of her art. Carriera's artistic career began with lace-making, for which Venice was famous. However, she soon turned to miniature painting and, finally, to painting with pastels. She created allegories, portrayed friends and artists, but also the European nobility of her time. In doing so, she created a visual vernacular that gave expression to the social type of the lively and self-confident woman - a type she no less embodied. By devoting herself to art and pursuing an enviable career as an independent artist, she serves as an early role model for feminist artists.
The Life and Work of Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757): The Queen of Pastel is the first extensive biographical narrative in English of Rosalba Carriera. It is also the first scholarly investigation of the external and internal factors that helped to create this female painter's unique career in eighteenth-century Europe. It documents the difficulties, complications, and consequences that arose then -- and can also arise today -- when a woman decides to become an independent artist. This book contributes a new, in-depth analysis of the interplay between society's expectations, generally accepted codices for gendered behaviour, and one single female painter's astute strategies for achieving success, as well as autonomy in her professional life as a famed artist. Some of the questions that the author raises are: How did Carriera manage to build up her career? How did she run her business and organize her own workshop? What kind of artist was Carriera? Finally, what do her self-portraits reveal in terms of self-enactment and possibly autobiographical turning points?
