Most of us think about our circulatory system only when something goes wrong, but the amazing story of how it goes right -- "magnificently right," as author Steven Vogel puts it -- is equally worthy of our attention. In Vital Circuits, Steven Vogel gives us a fascinating, often witty, and highly original guide to the heart, vessels, and blood. He takes us through the realm of biology and into the neighbouring fields of physics, fluid mechanics, and chemistry. We relive the discoveries of such scientists as William Harvey and Otto Loewi, and we consider the circulatory systems of such fellow earth-dwellers as octopuses, hummingbirds, sea gulls, alligators, snails, snakes, and giraffes. Vogel is a master at using everyday points of reference to illustrate potentially daunting concepts. And we learn not only such practical information as why you might want to wear support hose on a long aeroplane flight, but also the answers to such seemingly unrelated issues as why duck breasts (but not chicken breasts) have dark meat, and why dust accumulates on the blades of a fan. The author reveals himself to be an eloquent advocate for the cause of science as the most interesting of the humanities, Vogel's story will appeal to everyone who has ever wondered what "120 over 80" means, who exercises regularly for cardiovascular fitness, or who has an interest in how the heart works.
The Parritch and the Partridge: The Reception of Robert Burns in Germany
This book sets out to explore the reception of Scotland’s best-loved writer Robert Burns in Germany, beginning with Burns’s contemporaries in a German state and at a time when instant international fame of foreign writers was yet to develop. The author traces Burns’s growing popularity and, for instance, demonstrates how a single line from a foreigner’s poem could become the motto of a generation of German revolutionists. Many of Burns’s well-known poems do not only figure in this first part but are also the subject of specific case studies in the second. Here works such as «Tam O’ Shanter» or «A red, red rose» are analysed in translation through the ages. The author’s comprehensive work is complemented by a short research update on the reception of Burns.

The vivid characterization in this collection of stories holds our attention like nothing else. The language is impeccable and riveting. Wit and humour punctuate the flow of the narrative, as we are introduced to people who reflect the society and age they live in. Are the lives of these people mundane? Maybe, maybe not. But what is certain is that the unexpected lies in the shadows of everyone's lives.

Hvem forrådte Anne Frank: En Cold Case-utredning

The Betrayal of Anne Frank: A Cold Case Investigation
A New York Times BestsellerLess a mystery unsolved than a secret well kept...Using new technology, recently discovered documents and sophisticated investigative techniques, an international team--led by an obsessed retired FBI agent--has finally solved the mystery that has haunted generations since World War II: Who betrayed Anne Frank and her family? And why?Over thirty million people have read The Diary of a Young Girl, the journal teen-aged Anne Frank kept while living in an attic with her family and four other people in Amsterdam during World War II, until the Nazis arrested them and sent them to a concentration camp. But despite the many works--journalism, books, plays and novels--devoted to Anne's story, none has ever conclusively explained how these eight people managed to live in hiding undetected for over two years--and who or what finally brought the Nazis to their door. With painstaking care, retired FBI agent Vincent Pankoke and a team of indefatigable investigators pored over tens of thousands of pages of documents--some never before seen--and interviewed scores of descendants of people familiar with the Franks. Utilizing methods developed by the FBI, the Cold Case Team painstakingly pieced together the months leading to the infamous arrest--and came to a shocking conclusion. The Betrayal of Anne Frank: A Cold Case Investigation is the riveting story of their mission. Rosemary Sullivan introduces us to the investigators, explains the behavior of both the captives and their captors and profiles a group of suspects. All the while, she vividly brings to life wartime Amsterdam: a place where no matter how wealthy, educated, or careful you were, you never knew whom you could trust.

?The family justice system in England and Wales has undergone radical change over the past 20 years. A significant part of this shifting landscape has been an increasing emphasis on settling private family disputes out of court, which has been embraced by policy-makers, judges and practitioners alike and is promoted as an unqualified good.Mapping Paths to Family Justice: Resolving Family Disputes in Neoliberal Times examines the experiences of people taking part in out-of-court family dispute resolution in England and Wales. It addresses questions such as how participants’ experiences match up to the ideal; how recent changes to the legal system have affected people’s ability to access out-of-court dispute resolution; and what kind of outcomes are achieved in family dispute resolution. This book is the first study systematically to compare different forms of family dispute resolution. It explores people’s experiences of solicitor negotiations, mediation and collaborative law empirically by analyzing findings from a nationally representative survey, individual in-depth interviews with parties and practitioners, and recorded family dispute resolution processes. It considers these in the context of ongoing neoliberal reforms to the family justice system, drawing out conclusions and implications for policy and practice.
