'Daring, unsettling and original, The Weight of Loss is a debut to savour.' Victoria Gosling, author of Before the Ruins It starts with a single black hair, growing thick and immovable from her spine. Marianne is grieving. Desperately trying to hold down some semblance of a normal life, she forces herself to go through the motions: cooking dinner with her boyfriend, showing up to work, calling her parents when she feels able to handle their reminders of all she has lost. And then, her body begins to betray her. When no one can explain what is going on, Marianne's doctor directs her to Nede, an experimental health retreat deep in the Welsh countryside. By the time Marianne starts to suspect that all is not as it seems at Nede, it's already too late. Dark and incendiary, The Weight of Loss is a moving novel about grief and resilience, full of surprising twists.

An exquisitely eerie and unsettling speculative novel that grapples with questions of trauma, identity, and the workings of memoryMonths after her sister's death, Marianne wakes up to find a growth of thick black hairs along her spine. They defy her attempts to remove them, instead proliferating, growing longer. The hairs, Marianne's doctor tells her, are a reaction to trauma, developed in the wake of the loss of her sister, Marie. Her doctor recommends that Marianne visits Nede, a modern, New Age rehabilitation center in a remote forest in Wales where the patients attend unorthodox therapy sessions and commune with nature. Yet something strange is happening to Marianne and the other patients at Nede: a metamorphosis of a kind. As the hairs on her back continue to grow, the past starts to entangle itself with the present and the borders of her consciousness threaten to disintegrate. She finds herself drawn back compulsively to the memory of Marie, obsessing over the impulse that drew her sister toward death and splintered her family apart. As Marianne's memories threaten to overwhelm her, Nede offers her release from this cycle of memory and pain--but only at a terrible price: that of identity itself. Haunting, lyrical, and introspective, Garden of Earthly Bodies is a startlingly accomplished and original debut about the bond between two sisters, love and its limits, and our inability to ever truly to know the minds of others. With an intense and precise attention to the internal workings of minds and bodies and a disturbing speculative plot, the novel welcomes an assured new voice to the genre.

The Human Factor in Nursing Home Care

In an attempt to challenge the prevailing attitudes and images of nursing homes in America, the authors have written a touching book about the people and the relationships that are a part of nursing home care. Their extensive study of and experience with nursing home residents and caregivers reveal that our negative and often painful thoughts about nursing homes are not always well-founded. The authors effectively use monologue and dialogue to take the reader into the world of the nursing home to observe the work of the nursing home staffs, from administrators to housekeepers, as they become surrogate families and friends of the patients. Most moving are the thoughts and words of the residents themselves, especially as they describe their initial horror and anger at being in the nursing home, and their feelings of abandonment and loss of self-esteem. Valuable for both undergraduate and graduate courses in nursing, social work, psychology, death and dying, pastoral care and counseling, this comprehensive volume is useful as a primary or supplementary text.BACKCOVER COPY In an attempt to challenge the prevailing attitudes and images of nursing homes in America, David Oliver and Sally Tureman have written a touching book about the people and the relationships that are a part of nursing home care. Note sulla specie Trachylepis Vittata (Olivier, 1804) nell'Iran occidentale
