The panicked voice of a teenage girl interrupts Celie Landon's gardening at her river house one unseasonably warm April day. As soon as she realizes the dark spot in the water may be a child, she races to help the girl, but arrives too late. During the rescue efforts for 11 year-old Henry Lewis, his older sister Meeka and Celie are inextricably linked. The guilt that each one feels roils under the surface while the body remains missing for four days. As Celie obsesses over her part in the drowning, she confronts feelings of inadequacy after a year-long battle with cancer, the widening distance from her husband Jake, and issues from her New England childhood in an all-white town. 14-year-old Meeka, crushed by her mother's withdrawal, worries about her continuing responsibility to 'mind' her little sister Jasmine, 5, and two cousins, Lin , 7, and Rey, 13, abandoned by his mother a year earlier. Struggling to make sense of the sudden changes in her world, Meeka is curious about the white lady's ongoing interjection in their lives. Their growing relationship is complicated by Celie's disgust over her failure to be the person she thought she was before the cancer. At the funeral while Meeka's mother and schoolmates challenge her publicly, Rey disappears. Meeka blames herself. Guessing that he's gone to find his unreliable mother, she leaves home secretly to track him down. When Celie figures out where Meeka has gone, she follows her to Baltimore in hopes of avoiding another tragedy. Interwoven with lingering issues of race in small-town America, the story celebrates the journey of unlikely friends who discover common ground in their grief and in their determination to be better people.

The 16th Street Baptist Church will always be known for a horrific act of evil that took place inside. What was known by the community as a place to gather and celebrate life, births, weddings, and other family gatherings evolved into something more. Citizens met to discuss the news of the day, to make plans for their local neighborhoods and to talk about ways to make their community better. Some people in the community saw this activity as a threat and carried out an unimaginable assault on innocent families and children. Four young girls were killed in the bombing that day, and a fifth child survived. Her name is Sarah Collins Rudolph. This is her story. This book details what the families experienced, and the challenges they faced along the way. It is written for teen readers and adults alike, with illustrations to help visualize their journey. "Beautifully illustrated and creatively told."
The Standard of Ur

The Standard of Ur

Ur, one of the world’s first cities, was highly important politically and economically around 2600 – 2500 BC when the Sumerian rulers of the city were buried in tombs filled with ornate, valuable objects and with evidence of elaborate rituals and human sacrifice. Without the artefacts from the tombs of Ur it would be very difficult for us today to visualise Sumerian history and know anything about Sumerian art. Of all the objects found in the royal tombs of Ur, the Standard is the most informative yet also the most enigmatic. The Standard was given its name because it lay in a tomb near the shoulder of a man as if it had been carried like a battle standard. However, its real function and purpose within the tomb is still unknown. It was originally hollow, like a box, and is decorated on four sides with mosaic images created with inlays of shell, lapis lazuli and red limestone that were set into bitumen on a wooden frame. The two main, rectangular sides sometimes referred to as ‘war’ and ‘peace’, show scenes of a battle and of a banquet. Both of these themes, commonly depicted in Mesopotamian art, are shown on the Standard using a narrative technique that was to be used in Mesopotamia for almost two thousand years and can still be appreciated today. Viewed as a remarkable work of ancient art the Standard testifies to sophisticated Sumerian craftsmanship and the wide tr ade networks and wealth of the city of Ur. More importantly for us today, it is also a realistic and lively representation of aspects of the life and concerns of people who lived in one of the world’s great ancient civilisations during the third millennium BC. This beautifully illustrated short introduction tells the story of discovery and significance of this splendid object.
Lateness and Modernism

Lateness and Modernism

In the aftermath of World War I, a sense of impasse and thwarted promise shaped the political and cultural spheres in Britain. Writers such as D. H. Lawrence, Hilda Doolittle, T. S. Eliot and Wyndham Lewis were among the literary figures who responded by pursuing vividness, autonomy and impersonality in their work. Yet the extent to which these practices were reflected in ideas about music from within the same milieu has remained unrecognised. Uncovering the work of composer-critics who worked alongside these figures - including Philip Heseltine (Peter Warlock), Cecil Gray and Kaikhosru Sorabji - Sarah Collins traces the shared tendencies of literary and musical modernisms in interwar Britain. Collins explores the political investments underpinning these tendencies, as well as the influence of English Nietzscheanism and related intellectual currents, arguing that a particular conception of the self, history, and the public characterised an ethos of 'lateness' within this milieu.

The Aesthetic Life of Cyril Scott

The Aesthetic Life of Cyril Scott

The first comprehensive account of the life and influences of Cyril Scott, not merely a composer but an artist in the broadest possible sense of the term. Prolific and personable, innovative and contentious, Cyril Scott (1879 - 1970) was considered to be one of the most promising young talents in modern British music at the turn of the twentieth century. He was a member of the 'Frankfurt Group' (together with Percy Grainger, Norman O'Neill, Roger Quilter and Balfour Gardiner), his music was performed by some of the leading conductors of the time in Britain and on the Continent, and his friends included highly influential figures in European literature, art and politics. Apart from his music, Scott was the author of many books on alternative medicine, psychology, Occultism, Theosophy and comparative religion. He also wrote fiction, autobiography, and poetry. Scott embodied a unique time in a particularly unique way. His aesthetic ideas informed both his professional creative practice and his manner of living. He was not merely a composer, but an artist in thebroadest possible sense of the term. This book provides the first comprehensive account of Scott's life and influences as well as an outline and contextualization of his aesthetic thinking. It traces his changing conceptionof the function of art and the role of the artist from his formative exposure to Symbolism through his friendship with the German poet Stefan George, to his exploration of Western and Eastern esoteric traditions, showing how the prevailing cross-pollination of ideas allowed him to develop a fully integrated rationale for his art and life. The story of Scott's development guides the reader through some of the most fascinating intellectual discourses of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century Europe. Sarah Collins' current research focuses on British music aesthetics and criticism in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. She has a particular interest in the interaction between turn-of-the-century conceptions of the function of criticism, theories of critical intuition and questions of moral philosophy. She lectured at the University of Queensland from 2006 and joined the faculty ofMonash University in 2012.

Everywhere women face choices -- home or career, money or relationships, 'secure' marriage or 'free' singleness, using your looks to get on or ignoring your looks and getting ignored, competing with the boys or retreating into the sisterhood ghetto, the 'progress' of feminism or the 'nostalgia' of motherhood and apple-pie, women bishops or tea-ladies and baby-sitters?Our culture has plenty to say on all these issues. But a Christian woman, seeking to live for her Lord, will first of all want to find out God's design, purposes and promises for women. And here's the book to help. Sarah Collins (nee Young), in this set of nine Bible studies, aims to answer questions such as: - What does the Bible say about the 'big issues' facing women today? - How should this affect my own life? - How can I be helped to live like this in a society with a very different agenda? Some things will be controversial in our culture, even in some of our churches. This course doesn't set out to be politically correct but faithful to Scripture.Suitable for groups or individuals, this guide covers all the major Bible teaching specific to women. Set within the big picture of God's redemption of sinners through Jesus Christ, the heart-felt aim is that 21st century women will be enabled to live obediently and joyfully for Christ, as women after his own heart. This edition has been revised and updated with a new study--women and their children.
