Addressed to an educated general readership, Lancel's authoritative study places St Augustine against the colourful background of the Mediterranean world of antiquity, exploring the major influences, events and competing philosophies which were formative for his thought and theology. Attention is given to the essential features of what became both Catholic and Protestant doctrines, the dotrine of grace in controversy with Pelagius and to Augustine's formidable supporter Julian of Eclanum. This translation invites English-speaking readers to share in Lancel's intimate and sympathetic knowledge of one of the greatest figures in Christian antiquity.
This is an historical biography of Hannibal, the military leader of Carthage responsible for waging a dramatic onslaught on Rome during the Punic Wars. One of the few generals of history to be famous for the war he lost, Hannibal's attack in 218BC - which included his renowned march of elephants across the Alps - ranks amongst the most courageous and ill-fated enterprises in the history of the ancient world. This definitive biography of one of the most fascinating figures of ancient history offers a fresh perspective on the demise of the Hellenistic world and the rise of Rome.

A family's quest to make sense of their shared history. A bittersweet exploration of love, loss, and the chaos of sibling relationships. When family bonds are tested, humor and heartbreak collide.A 2021 novel by esteemed French playwright Yasmina Reza, Serge tells a family story that revolves around three siblings of Hungarian–Jewish descent. As Serge, Jean, and their sister Nana embark on an unexpected road trip to Auschwitz and Birkenau they take along one of their daughters and plenty of complicated family history. What begins as a solemn trip quickly devolves into a chaotic mix of personal grievances, sibling banter, and awkward confrontations. Set in the present tense, the story is both a meditation on dying and memory and an exploration of how we love and hate those closest to us.Reza masterfully portrays the messiness of family life, where love and resentment intertwine, and the weight of shared history looms large. She probes themes of generational trauma, midlife crises, and the absurdities of modern existence and explores how everybody handles these situations differently. Serge is a richly layered tale that is as reflective as it is humorous—a testament to Reza’s unique ability to find humanity in the chaos.

Serge Chaloff (1923-1957) is most widely remembered as the flamboyant baritone saxophone star with Woody Herman's 2nd Herd whose problems with drugs extended to erratic personal behavior. Nevertheless, there were many brilliant sessions featuring his work before and after his stint with Herman. This work attempts to bring them the recognition they deserve. Simosko details the life and music of Serge Chaloff in an engaging style, from his childhood in Boston, Massachusetts, through his untimely death in 1957. He also provides a discography of Chaloff's recorded output, much of which has been made available by the 1993 Mosaic Records release of The Complete Serge Chaloff Sessions.
