Tender Noted is a meditation on the intersection of desire, mourning, and listening to one’s skin while coming to understand the practice of love. This interdisciplinary work brings together images from Miller’s filmic and photographic practice, informed by and given voice to by Miller’s writing. The book’s organizing principle is the echo: between text and image and between bodies and the stages, rooms, and affects they inhabit. Taking up skin as a site of history and intimacy with the self and across generations, Miller holds space both for the body’s vulnerabilities and its maladies. Moving between poems and lists, diaristic writing, and plays, which feature characters such as Mrs. Lovely, Miller asks what types of speech, postures, and practices define the self within the entanglement of relation. Tender Noted is a study on love in its everyday pain and pleasure. About the author Shala Miller, also known by the performance moniker “Freddie June” when she sings, was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. At around the age of ten or eleven, Miller discovered quietude, the kind you’re sort of pushed into, and then was fooled into thinking that this is where they should stay put. Since then, Miller has been trying to find their way out, and find their way into an understanding of herself and her history, using photography, video, writing, acting, and singing as aids in this process. Miller holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where they studied photography, film, video, and writing, and has studied under filmmaker Lucrecia Martel in Barcelona as part of La Selva’s film workshop “Sounds of Summer. ” They received a fellowship to attend the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and participated in the New York Film Festival’s Artist Academy. Praise "The voices sitting in this skin are creating heat," writes Shala Miller in her far-reaching, full-bleed mourning song (and plays, and poems, and photographs), Tender Noted. She shies not from the flesh, scratching at the surface to discover what lies under archive and invention, needfully undivided. Fully embodied. "Time has not healed this wound so far," she says, sitting in the thick of heartbreak, curiously tending to its edges. Orbiting Tender Noted, I see the tonal influences of Charles Burnett’s The Killer of Sheep, and the voice and pen of Wanda Coleman, offering the blue note in text, image, quiet shrills and wails. "Writing future love poems to sing at my grave," Miller meets the many shapes of grief, wielding reverence and damning honesty in equal rite. This excavation requires a choir, a bouquet of crystalline, bubbling mouths and voices cast familiar, from family, neighbors, lovers, present and shifting aliases—when called on, we must step into the light and play our part. —S*an D. Henry-Smith Shala Miller’s chorus of plural selves dances across the pages of this slow, gorgeous collage. With a hand rendered unconscious by habit and also too familiarly self-conscious to bear, they scratch to soothe. The self-haunting throughout is rendered exactingly in one particular set of photographs: the artist’s lips and eyes, up close, seemingly projected against an invisible screen, against a darkened landscape, beneath an eclipsed light. Writing inside grooves, tucked next to scars, Miller offers something to hold onto. —Yasmina Price When I think of Shala, I think of her voice. I see her voice in the montage of these images and read cinema in the words. Looking through this book is like hearing Shala sing. —Nicole Miller

“Miller’s terrific book reminds that Russia made moves toward the East five hundred years ago, and explains why ignoring the Russian factor in Asian geopolitics today would be a big mistake.”—Michael McFaul, author of From Cold War to Hot Peace“Miller presents a Russia little known in the West: a Eurasian power that treats its eastern calling as seriously as it does its western one. Exceptionally well written and argued, We Shall Be Masters helps us understand Russia on its own terms and offers historical insight into the future of its relations with China, its main rival and occasional ally.”—Serhii Plokhy, author of The Gates of Europe“Challenges the conventional view that [Russia] has enduring interests in the Far East…For Russia, Miller argues, Asia has been a land of unfulfilled promises.”—Foreign Affairs“Captures the immensity, complexity, and importance of Russia’s eastern borderlands through the eyes of its explorers…Comprehensive and fluidly written.”—Publishers WeeklyEver since Peter the Great, Russian leaders have been lured by the promise of the East. But from the tsars to Stalin and beyond, Russia’s ambitions have repeatedly outstripped its capacity. In We Shall Be Masters, Chris Miller explores why these expansionist dreams so often ended in disappointment. With the heart of the nation in the European borderlands, Russia’s would-be pioneers struggled to maintain public interest in their far-flung pursuits. But its leaders never stopped setting their sights on the riches of the East. Today, as Vladimir Putin seeks to cement his strategic partnership with Xi Jinping’s China, the East remains as elusive and attractive to Russia as ever—and is likely to be as unattainable.

Alice Miller's work in the field of child abuse has attracted international acclaim. In this classic text, Miller embarks on a revolutionary psychoanalytic path in order to explain why child abuse is so widespread and why it is so commonly ignored or overlooked. She argues that we have used fundamentally mistaken Freudian theories on infantile sexuality to conceal the true nature of the relationship between adults and children. Only when we acknowledge the trauma involved can we begin to understand how childhood repression poisons all subsequent relations for its victims. Dr Miller combines case histories with dreams, fairy tales and the works of Kafka, Woolf, Flaubert, Beckett and others in a formidable argument for a more compassionate approach to a bewildering problem.

Thou Shalt Not Lack!: Understanding God's Provision for You
God's Abundant Provision. A Promise...and A Right Lack is more than just a financial matter. Much of the hardships in life are the result of wrong thinking and wrong decisions. We must learn the importance of renewing our mind with God's higher thoughts. We can only prosper to the degree that our souls (thoughts) prosper. It is imperative that we seek first His kingdom, and not money or material possessions. Prosperity is never to be our goal in life. Many Christians are living far below what Jesus has purchased for them. They are struggling to attain what God has freely provided. Jesus came that we might have an abundant life. Living in lack is not abundant living. Lack goes against the very nature of God. Financial provision is not only a biblical promise, but the right of every born-again believer. In his book, Thou Shalt Not Lack, Jeff Miller presents reasons that Christians suffer lack, and what they can do to release the blessings of God in their lives. The same covenant that provides us with forgiveness and healing also provides us redemption from the curse of lack. As you apply the Biblical principles contained in this book you will begin to experience the goodness of God in a fresh way and will move out of the land of lack into God's full supply.

Science, and Religion. Material vs. Spiritual, Concrete vs. Abstract, Tangible vs. Ethereal. Seemingly opposite concepts, with very real implications for life and reality, often considered incompatible on various points, a conflict that has seemingly gone on forever. Rarely is there true mediation, a sincere attempt to present both aspects in a fair, logical light, providing validity and respect to both. Many wholeheartedly believe in the tenets of science; many also wholeheartedly believe in God, a supreme being, an intelligent, creative life-force, a Universal Consciousness. And, some of us wholeheartedly believe that these two are NOT mutually exclusive, nor that there needs to be such a conflict, such a wide chasm between the two, and if they would just get together, if BOTH sides could LISTEN open-mindedly to each other, they could come to understand and respect each other, and find common ground. Because there is much common ground to be found. With insight and imagination, and occasional poignancy and humor, Miller offers a clear and respectful presentation of both sides of the argument, and some logical common ground.

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2019 "Mr. Miller strikes an impressive balance between adventure and atmosphere."--The Wall Street Journal When Captain John Lacroix returns home from Spain, wounded, unconscious, and alone, he believes that he has seen the worst of what men may do. It is 1809, and in England's wars against Napoleon, the Battle of Corruna stands out as a humiliation: a once-proud army forced to retreat, civilized men reduced to senseless acts of cruelty. Slowly regaining his health, Lacroix journeys north to the misty isles of Scotland with the intent of forgetting the horrors of the war. Unbeknownst to him, however, something else has followed him back from the war--something far more dangerous than a memory...
