Congratulations on your purchase of this guidebook to your organization's future. Welcome to a future where your colleagues, your board, and your organization itself approach each day as an opportunity to get better, to improve, and to learn This book, while short and easy to understand, will be your step-by-step companion on an exciting journey to becoming a learning organization. In these pages, you will find information on five locks that prevent progress in many organizations. These locks keep you, your staff and your organization from maximizing your potential. Perhaps you recognize some of these in your agency and hate the way they are holding you back: -Nothing EVER changes -Everything is always about the short-term -The new people we hire are smart, but don't "get" us very well -It's IMPOSSIBLE to get support for new ways of doing things -Everyone is busy doing their OWN thing-and we never know what that is If you experience any of these nagging and demoralizing issues on the job, this book, Old Organizations, New Tricks will help you unlock potential you didn't know was there. The Five Keys you'll read about will lead you to -Examine the present, imagine the future, and move forward -See both the forest and the trees so you can thrive -Make choices now to reap large benefits later -Hire people who will fit in, contribute and stay around because they love working in your organization -Ensure growth opportunities to build a better team -Uncover and update operating practices that have outlived their usefulness -Use generative dialogue to uncover faulty decisions, before you lose time, money, staff, and community support -Guide, mold and cultivate a shared vision of excellence -Implement the lessons you and your staff members have learned from experiences in your organization And much more Perhaps you know of a learning organization - one which is innovative and adaptable. It takes risks, and sometimes makes mistakes. But it sees each challenge as an opportunity to learn something important. As a result, it keeps getting better and better. This is a special type of organization, "where people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning to see the whole together." These are the words of Peter Senge (1990, p. 3) who first coined the term learning organization and inspired tens of thousands of questions and answers about what it means for organizations to learn and exactly how we can help them to do so. This short report is also inspired by Senge's ideas, and it draws on the work of many others who have written about and studied this curious phenomenon before and after him. This report simplifies some basic characteristics of learning organizations and suggests practical exercises that you can implement right away in order to start leading your organization down a new path - a path that is not without potholes or forks in the road but which nonetheless moves onward and upward to higher ground. In this way, you can soon be the leader of an organization that never stops learning, but is continually committed to growth. You can unlock the potential of your organization to improve and grow by using the five keys presented here. As a review, here are those five keys to leading a powerful learning organization: Key 1: Expand your Horizons Key 2: Invest in People Key 3: Retire Outdated Paradigms Key 4: Cultivate a Shared Vision Key 5: Tap In to the Collective Be sure to look carefully for CAN-DO's other information products. "An unexpected story and a gem of a book."--Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The incomparable Campbell McGrath, whom Outside magazine calls, "A writer who could help save poetry from academia and get the rest of us reading it again," delivers an astounding work: Shannon, an epic poem that traces the remarkable journey of the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Kansas City Star praises Shannon as, "A luminescent narrative...a myth of American character before its corruption," and Campbell McGrath--Poet Laureate, Guggenheim Fellowship, Pushcart Prize, and three-time Academy of American Poets Prize winner--proves once again to be truly an "everyman poet" who channels the spirit of Walt Whitman in this lyrical adventure.

After Shannon accidentally lands a lead role in the summer musical, she realizes she has bigger things to worry about than stage fright in this contemporary middle-school novel about strained friendships, the positive power of theater, and the realities of being a tween with OCD. Shannon Carter never considered herself much of a theater person. Not like her two BFFs, Elise, an actress, and Fatima, a techie. Shannon's always been content to stay backstage, helping wherever she can. But when the director of the summer musical hears Shannon singing, he encourages her to step out of the wings and into the spotlight. At first, Shannon is hesitant. As a twelve-year-old with obsessive-compulsive disorder, she depends on routine. But when she braves the audition, she discovers that center stage is the one place where she doesn't feel anxious. She lands a lead role, and everyone in her life is ecstatic . . . except Elise. To make matters worse, Shannon's eccentric and opinionated grandmother moves in with her and her mom after a fluke house fire. As opening night approaches, Shannon feels pressure to save her friendship with Elise, to make Mom and Grandma Ruby act like grown-ups, and to follow the old theater adage The show must go on.

Shannon Miller has truly lived the American Dream-its drama and disappointment, its hope and joy. Written by her mother, this profusely illustrated story of Shannon's journey to Olympic fame is also the portrait of a family working together to help a child achieve a difficult, challenging goal. The ultimate thrill for an athlete is to stand on a podium and, with the world as witness, to accept an Olympic medal. In Shannon Miller: My Child, My Hero, Claudia Miller helps us understand the dedication and hard work preceding that moment of Olympic glory. Claudia presents intimate details of Shannon's life, her triumphs and her crushing defeats. She also shares the ways she and her husband, Ron, handled both the tears and the happiness, as well as how they dealt with Shannon's siblings, Tessa and Troy, and her teachers and coaches. We journey with the Miller family through Shannon's training and achievements, struggles and injuries, to her dramatic comeback. In the 1992 Olympics, she won five medals. An in 1996, despite media declarations that she was no longer competitive, Shannon performed brilliantly-leading the women's gymnastics team to first place and winning a gold medal for her performance on the balance beam.

Using photography as a language, Shannon Ebner (born 1971) examines the signs, symbols, letters, words and graphical icons we encounter in the world. Auto Body Collision documents Ebner's most recent ongoing project, a multipart series of photographs that began on a trip to Italy in 2014. Ebner has been collecting language taken from signs, seeking out repetitions of terms such as "Auto Body Collision" and "Automotive." In dissecting found language and coupling it with her own, Ebner establishes connections between the terms "auto," "body," "motive" and "collision." The themes of Ebner's new work include the circulatory and the network, performance and its relationship to the body, and collision, in terms both literal and conceptual. Auto Body Collision, designed in collaboration with the artist, includes more than 150 never-before-published photographs, as well as essays by Alex Klein, Tina Kukielski and Mark Owens.
