Delbert M. Shankel Departments of }1icrobiology and Biochemistry The University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas 66045 Welcome to the "International Conference on Mecha. nisms of Antimutagen- esis and Anticarcinogenesis. " We are delighted that so many of you have chosen to attend this first meeting on this important topic. The significance of genetic changes in cells has been recognized for many years. The seminal observations of Henri in 1914 (UV), Muller in 1927 (X-rays), and Auerbach in 1946 (chemical agents) established the fact that physical and chemical agents which may be present in our environment are capable of producing profound changes in heredity. It is now well-estab- lished, of course, that such changes can result in the development of can- cer, produce hereditary birth defects, alter microorganisms to cause drug resistance, or other harmful (or even beneficial) changes; it is likely that the processes of mutagenesis and the intricate balance between muta- genesis and antimutagenesis are involved in aging, evolution, and other fundamental life processe8. Consequently, we hope and believe that assem- bling thi. s group of scientists to share current fundamental and applied research in these areas will lead to a better understanding of these proc- esses and to long-term benefits for society. As stated clearly by Garfield (4), "Almost every aspect of modern liv- ing exposes us to health risks.

"What I Want You To Know" is comprised of what has been seen, observed, learned, and experienced. Brutal awakening in understanding the symptoms of displacement, racism, and oppression that is spilled out, and affects the entire world by what is perpetuated in the United States. A society that has yet to acknowledge its dealings in partaking in the core of these issues. Cyclical affects that skews history, to bury the truth of what we know.

The Yoruba Are on a Rock focuses on the Africans who arrived in Grenada decades after the abolition of the British slave trade and how they radically shaped the religious and cultural landscape of the island. Rooted in extensive archival and ethnographic research, Shantel A. George carefully traces and unpacks the complex movements of people and ideas between various points in western Africa and the Eastern Caribbean to argue that Orisa worship in Grenada is not, as has been generally supposed, a residue of recaptive Yoruba peoples, but emerged from dynamic and multi-layered exchanges within and beyond Grenada. Further, the book shows how recaptives pursued freedom by drawing on shared African histories and experiences in the homeland and in Grenada, and recovers intriguing individual biographies of the recaptives, their descendants, and religious custodians. By historicising this island's little-known and fascinating tradition, the book advances our knowledge of African diaspora cultures and histories.

All children deserve access to the conditions and opportunities needed to thrive, including unbiased accessible healthcare and high-quality learning opportunities; safe, toxin-free communities and stable housing; access to nutritious meals; and secure, warm, available, and loving caregivers. Historic and contemporary injustices in US society have created inequities in opportunity and access to resources for Black, Latine, Asian, American Indian and Alaska Native, and other children of color, children with disabilities, children in poverty, and other marginalized children; these have contributed to stark disparities across child development outcomes. This Element overviews inequities in economic, educational, and health systems through historical and contemporary perspectives and describes how these inequities impact children and families. Solutions to address these inequities are considered for a fairer US society, starting with its youngest residents, where all families have what they need to thrive. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

John Kidd: The Life and Legacy of a Settler in Upper Canada
As a seventh-generation Canadian, I trace my roots back to my great-great-great-grandfather, John Kidd, an Irish immigrant who came to Upper Canada in 1822. HIs 97-year lifetime spanned from the early settlement of Upper Canada through the post-Confederation era. His life offers a powerful lens for thinking about how land which had once been home to countless generations of Indigenous families became home to generations of settlers. John Kidd's story also invites reflection on what it means to be a settler in today's Canada, as we actively co-author a new chapter of Canadian history dedicated to reconciliation.
