Tracing developments in toy making and marketing across the evolving landscape of the 20th century, this encyclopedia is a comprehensive reference guide to America's most popular playthings and the culture to which they belong. From the origins of favorite playthings to their associations with events and activities, the study of a nation's toys reveals the hopes, goals, values, and priorities of its people. Toys have influenced the science, art, and religion of the United States, and have contributed to the development of business, politics, and medicine. Toys and American Culture: An Encyclopedia documents America's shifting cultural values as they are embedded within and transmitted by the nation's favorite playthings. Alphabetically arranged entries trace developments in toy making and toy marketing across the evolving landscape of 20th-century America. In addition to discussing the history of America's most influential toys, the book contains specific entries on the individuals, organizations, companies, and publications that gave shape to America's culture of play from 1900 to 2000. Toys from the two decades that frame the 20th century are also included, as bridges to the fascinating past—and the inspiring future—of American toys.

The decline this century in church attendance has been pronounced. And polls show disconcerting ignorance about religious matters even among churchgoers. Is there a path to spiritual and church renewal? And what will become the shape of American Christianity this century? As an accompanying volume to James M. Dawsey's Handbook for the Christian Faith, this workbook offers a summary of essential beliefs and practices of the faith; identifies significant terms, names, dates, and events in church history; lists themes and materials to be learned; provides exercises; and suggests additional readings to enhance understanding. The materials will prove of interest to all wanting to understand the role played by Christianity in western culture and to decipher the chaos of present-day American Christianity. But the Study Guide and Workbook for Spiritual and Church Renewal will be especially useful to Christians working through the Handbook for the Christian Faith, reflecting more deeply on the meaning of the Christian heritage and seeking to discern a right path for contemporary Christianity. The exercises in this workbook extend beyond understanding Christianity as a religion to readers better understanding themselves as Christians. How shall we be faithful followers of Christ?

For my unique and rare style of writing poetry, I received an "Editor's Choice Award" from the International Library of Poetry. What's more amazing is how my poetry writing came about and it is not just on one subject, but many. In order to find out, you will have to take a deeper look into the book and read a little about my life. There is poetry on: Inspirational, Animal's, Bird's, Insects, Nature, Patriotism and more. Some are about depression, that I thought of leaving it out at one time. But decided to include this part because it does happen in real life. People I have met on-line have given me several compliments about my writings. Some say I should make a "Children's Book" with some of the poems. One Mother said she read "Busy, Busy Bees" to her daughter, and she started singing it around the house.

Nonprofit organizations in the U.S. earn more than $100 billion annually, and number over a million different organizations. They face increasing competition for donor's dollars and many of the issues they confront are similar to those confronted by for-profit organizations. This book applies powerful concepts of strategic management developed originally in the for-profit sector to the management of nonprofits. It describes the preparation of a strategic plan consistent with the resources available; it analyses the operational tasks in executing the plan; and describes the ways in which nonprofits need to change in order to remain competitive. The book draws clear distinctions between the different challenges encountered by nonprofits operating in different industries. It will be useful for managers in such diverse organizations as the Santa Fe Opera, the Salvation Army, and the National Football League.

An Image of God

An Image of God

Sharon M. Leon

In the first half of the twentieth century, supporters of the eugenics movement offered an image of a racially transformed America by curtailing the reproduction of "unfit" members of society. Through institutionalization, compulsory sterilization, the restriction of immigration and marriages, and other methods, eugenicists promised to improve the population - a policy agenda that was embraced by many leading intellectuals and public figures. But Catholic activists and thinkers across the United States opposed many of these measures, asserting that "every man, even a lunatic, is an image of God, not a mere animal." In "An Image of God", Sharon M. Leon examines the efforts of American Catholics to thwart eugenic policies, illuminating the ways in which Catholic thought transformed the public conversation about individual rights, the role of the state, and the intersections of race, community, and family. Through an examination of the broader questions raised in this debate, Leon casts new light on major issues that remain central in American political life today: the institution of marriage, the role of government, and the separation of church and state. This is essential reading in the history of religion, science, politics, and human rights.

Sociologist Sharon M. Quinsaat sheds new light on the formation of diasporic connections through transnational protests. When people migrate and settle in other countries, do they automatically form a diaspora? In Insurgent Communities, Sharon M. Quinsaat explains the dynamic process through which a diaspora is strategically constructed. Quinsaat looks to Filipinos in the United States and the Netherlands-examining their resistance against the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, their mobilization for migrants' rights, and the construction of a collective memory of the Marcos regime-to argue that diasporas emerge through political activism. Social movements provide an essential space for addressing migrants' diverse experiences and relationships with their homeland and its history. A significant contribution to the interdisciplinary field of migration and social movements studies, Insurgent Communities illuminates how people develop collective identities in times of social upheaval.

This history of the punk movement in the United States shows how punk music, fashion, art, and attitude clashed with and ultimately influenced mainstream culture.Unlike other volumes on the punk era that focus on just the music—and primarily on British punk bands—Punks: A Guide to an American Subculture spans the full expanse of punk as it happened in the United States, from the late-1960s blast from Iggy Pop and the Stooges to the full explosion of punk in the mid 1970s to its next-generation resurgences and continuing aftershocks.Punks covers it all—not just music, but the punk influence on film, fashion, media, and language. Readers will see how punk spread virally, through fan-created magazines, record labels, clubs, and radio stations, as well as how mainstream America reacted, then absorbed aspects of punk culture. The book includes interviews with key members of the punk subculture, including new conversations with people who participated in the punk scene in the 1970s and 1980s.Includes new interviews with Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, founders of Dischord Records and the punk band Minor Threat, plus reprints of interviews with singers Jello Biafra and Kathleen Hanna, two well-known punks who spoke out frequently about politics and gender issuesOffers an annotated bibliography, including a variety of entries that are both scholarly and popular, grouped by format

Are the poor, as one writer suggests, only those without enough to eat? Or does poverty instead consist of "the inability to buy a beer when everyone else has one"? These two volumes provide a comprehensive summary and annotated bibliography of the issues associated with the definition and measurement of poverty. The discussion is organized around eleven topics in the areas of economics, political science, and sociology. Included are such diverse subjects as the historical evolution of poverty definitions (How did Karl Marx and Adam Smith define poverty?); the "index number" problem; and regional differences in poverty measurement. The annotated bibliography, including both articles and books, primarily covers material written after 1950.

A chilehead from childhood, Sharon Lippincott is hooked on all forms of life writing. She loves sharing discoveries with others. She teaches classes and workshops on basic memoir and lifestory writing as well as specific skills like writing vivid description in the Pittsburgh area and online. Her book, The Heart and Craft of Lifestory Writing gives complete guidelines from starry-eyed idea to publication for lifestory projects, and her award-winning blog, The Heart and Craft of Life Writing, has provided guidance for hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world. She serves on the Advisory Board of the National Association of Memoir Writers and mentors memoir groups in Allegheny County libraries and around the country. Readers say I can't tell you what a joy Adventures of a Chilehead was to read. I became so involved with the story that I couldn't put it down. Sharon Lippincott's marvelous way with words conveys feelings that draw readers in. (Katy Brown, Fellow Chilehead) It's not often you can get good entertainment and good food in one slim volume, but these adventures really tickle the taste buds whilst making you split your sides with mirth. This delightful little book had me laughing out loud so often I just had to try some of the recipes it offers. Finding unfamiliar ingredients in England made this an adventure in itself and, even though I'm not great as a cook, the taste was every bit as good as the words that inspired it onto my plate. (Ian Mathie, author of Bride Price and other African Memoirs) A lovely collection of sweet, funny, quaint, readable stories. If you're into hot food, you'll be able to relate. If you have ever sweated or spit out a dish because it's too hot you'll love it. And if you simply like a story about a brash, quirky family gal, this story will warm your heart, as well as your palate. (Jerry Waxler, author of The Memoir Revolution) A delightful, humorous and enlightening read. This is storytelling at its finest. Lippincott's use of humor and detail are unrivaled. (Kathleen Pooler, Memory Writer's Journey blog) Adventures of a Chilehead answers the question, Where is the pleasure in setting my mouth on fire? Sharon Lippincott answers the question with a collection of charming stories about her lifelong passion for those diminutive kings of culinary heat - chile peppers. Written as though she were sitting across the table from the reader, Adventures of a Chilehead is at once touching, informative and hilarious. A great book to read before you next answer the question, hot or mild? (Tom Imerito, Science Writer) As an Australian, hot is a word I always applied to the weather but never to my food. After reading Adventures of a Chilehead my opinion has changed forever I have been indoctrinated into a new way of viewing food. At its core this book is a love story - the tale of one woman's life-long adoration of chile. With a deft hand Lippincott shows how chile's influence can range from a warming comforter to a ruthless tempter. A perfect introduction to the subject of chile for anyone who is even the slightest bit interested in spicing up their palate. Lippincott will make you fall in love with this food as deeply and hopelessly as she has. (Jessica Baverstock, author of Creativity on Demand)
