A searingly honest portrayal of the search for spiritual enlightenment. "This book answers the question of how do you find the answer to who and what you are-ultimately-beyond any shadow of a doubt-beyond the body, and beyond the mind." This true story of friendship, love, and the darkest nights of the soul, follows a young spiritual seeker who drops out of school and spends the next decade in a spiritual search that leads from a Zen master in the wilds of West Virginia, to an iconoclastic Christian mystic in the heart of Los Angeles, and an architect-turned-sage in England. Entertaining storytelling combined with practical tips on spiritual disciplines and lessons from the path of spiritual awakening make this a must-have edition for those both curious and passionate about the mysteries of life, death, and enlightenment. "Deserves a prominent place on any bookshelf of nonduality, mindfulness, or meditation titles."

Praised as "illuminated meditations," this inspired collaboration of Phaedra Greenwood's photographic study of geometry in water complemented by the gentle Zen poetry of Shawn Nevins makes the point, over and over, that existence is sacred in all its myriad forms. "The authors indeed achieve a sense of sacred in these meandering hymns to the physics of water, either fluid or frozen, and meant to be read out loud -- 'delicate incessant transience.'" Taos News. Hydroglyphics was a 2022 Eric Hoffer Book Award Finalist.

Working Juju examines how fantastical and unreal modes are deployed in portrayals of the Caribbean in popular and literary culture as well as in the visual arts. The Caribbean has historically been constructed as a region mantled by the fantastic. Andrea Shaw Nevins analyzes such imaginings of the Caribbean and interrogates the freighting of Caribbean-infused spaces with characteristics that register as fantastical. These fantastical traits may be described as magical, supernatural, uncanny, paranormal, mystical, and speculative. The book asks throughout, What are the discursive threads that run through texts featuring the Caribbean fantastic? In Working Juju, Nevins teases out the multilayered and often obscured connections among texts such as the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, planter and historian Edward Long’s History of Jamaica, and Grenadian sci-fi writer Tobias Buckell’s Xenowealth series set in the future Caribbean. Fantastical representations of the region generally occupy one of two spaces. In the first, the Caribbean fantastic facilitates an imagining of the colonial experience and its aftermath as one in which the region and its representatives exercise agency and in which the humanity of the region’s inhabitants is asserted. Alternately, the fantastic is sometimes situated as a signifier of the irrational and uncivilized. The thread that unites portrayals of the fantastic Caribbean in the latter kind of works is that they tend to locate Caribbean belief systems as powerful, even at times inadvertently in contradiction to the text’s ideological posture. Nevins shows how the singular “Caribbean” identity that emerges in these text is at odds with the complex historical narratives of actual Caribbean countries and colonies.

Shawn Shook is a thirty-something bookstore employee plans to revive his great uncle's Cold War-era short stories; unfortunately, inertia engrosses Shawn Shook, who employs booze and a box of waterproof markers as tools to cope with a personal tragedy. The impotent protagonist covers the walls of his rented apartment with stories that serve no purpose other than narcissistic self-therapy. Shook surrounds himself with the words of others, and sadly perpetuates his "vortex of language" without realizing that, as his prized Oxford English Dictionary could tell him, words are defined as distinct from actions. Despite its melancholic shell, Shawn Shook features many comedic moments, including Shawn's humorous encounters with moronic bookstore patrons and delusional coworkers.

Shawn's Fundamentals of Dance
How do conscious experience, subjectivity, and free will arise from the brain and the body? Even in the late 20th century, consciousness was considered to be beyond the reach of science. Now, understanding the neural mechanisms underlying consciousness is recognized as a key objective for 21st century science. The cognitive neuroscience of consciousness is a fundamentally multidisciplinary enterprise, involving powerful new combinations of functional brain imaging, computational modelling, theoretical innovation, and basic neurobiology. Its progress will be marked by new insights not only into the complex brain mechanisms underlying consciousness, but also by novel clinical approaches to a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. These innovations are well represented by the contents of the present volume. A target article by Victor Lamme puts forward the contentious position that neural evidence should trump evidence from behaviour and introspection, in any theory of consciousness. This article and its several commentaries advance one of the fundamental debates in consciousness science, namely whether there exists non-reportable phenomenal consciousness, perhaps dependent on local rather than global neural processes. Other articles explore the wider terrain of the new science of consciousness. For example, Maniscalco and colleagues use theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation to selectively impair metacognitive awareness; Massimini and coworkers examine changes in functional connectivity during anesthesi, and Vanhaudenhuyse et al describe innovations in detecting residual awareness following traumatic brain injury. Together, then contents of this volume exemplify the `grand challenge of consciousness' in combining transformative questions about the human condition with a tractable programme of experimental and theoretical research.
In Color: Photographs by Shawn M. Tomlinson
I seem to be writing a lot of books lately. I guess it is because I did not have the opportunity to do so until this year, 2015. This particular collection is a group of photographs rather than an actual written book. It came about because of a desire to have some of my photographic work in print outside of newspapers. Thousands of my images have been published in newspapers over the years as part of my work as an editor, reporter and photographer. But, as we used to say in newspapers, it has to be perfect today, but tomorrow it's fish wrap. Not exactly permanent. The photos in this book span a period of 10 years, from 2005 to 2015 and none of them appeared in newspapers. - Shawn M. Tomlinson, Oct. 18, 2015
