Israel has one of the most extensive and highly developed hiking trail systems of any country in the world. Millions of hikers use the trails every year during holiday breaks, on mandatory school trips, and for recreational hikes. Walking the Land offers the first scholarly exploration of this unique trail system. Featuring more than ten thousand kilometers of trails, marked with hundreds of thousands of colored blazes, the trail system crisscrosses Israeli-controlled territory, from the country's farthest borders to its densest metropolitan areas. The thousand-kilometer Israel National Trail crosses the country from north to south. Hiking, trails, and the ubiquitous three-striped trail blazes appear everywhere in Israeli popular culture; they are the subjects of news articles, radio programs, television shows, best-selling novels, government debates, and even national security speeches. Yet the trail system is almost completely unknown to the millions of foreign tourists who visit every year and has been largely unstudied by scholars of Israel. Walking the Land explores the many ways that Israel's hiking trails are significant to its history, national identity, and conservation efforts.

Summoned back to his roots by an enigmatic letter from his deceased grandfather's lawyer, John Robert Horton is eager for the opportunity to spend a weekend with his six cousins, some of whom he has not interacted with in over thirty years. Arriving at the Rheinboldt farm, his mind flooded with wonderful memories of summers with his cousins, helping with chores and enjoying the freedom of youthful adventures and hijinks, he is eager to relive those moments and rekindle his brotherly love of his kin.Little does he know that his idyllic hopes are about to be challenged by a letter from the past; a letter in which his grandfather asks the cousins to work together to determine the fate of the family farm. As the weekend progresses and countless stories of the past are shared, it soon becomes clear that memories are personal and often not shared - at least in the context of what actually did or did not happen. Motives of perpetrators and responses of victims are never fully understood by either. The cousins struggle to find common ground in their past, leading to the emergence of old rivalries and the quickening of past grievances and hurts, which exacerbates their difficulties in seeking common ground to determine the future of the farm.Tensions and conflicts become inflamed, in part because of disagreement about how to honor their grandfather's request, but primarily as a result of the revelation of secrets from those 'halcyon' days - secrets which not only put cousins in conflict but also undermine the possibility of fulfilling that request. This is compounded by the tragic and unexplained death of one of the cousins which places what hopes they still cling to in peril, as they face the unknown consequences of a police investigation of the death, an investigation that leads to the revelation of a secret, long known by their parents, which had fractured their family as well as alienating friends. Can the cousins overcome the emotional challenge of dealing with their grief and learn to work together? Or will they simply abandon their grandparent's farm to the fickleness of fate and go back to living their separate lives'Shay's Crossing' is a compelling story of family love and betrayal. And a reminder to each of us of the difficulties of overcoming past hurts and losses in seeking a better tomorrow.

Feisty Shay longs to wear britches and cut her hair short. Even more, she'd love for all who live in Oldenshire, her fortress home, to stop eating meat. When hunters capture a pouncer for the Harvest Revel's "mane course," Shay decides to act. With the help of Alexy (the laundress's mute son) and Bridger (Da's retired war horse), she concocts a plan to free the beast before it winds up on Da's holiday spit. The pouncer repays Shay in a big way, bringing his own kingdom to the rescue when her fortress home falls under enemy siege. The problem? Da's soldiers see the forest citizens as their enemies too.Two kingdoms, divided by culture and language, multiplied by fear and misunderstanding, equals the chaos of war. Shay's mathematical mind sees it like this: (K1 ] K2) (c + l) ] x (f + m) = war.Can two imperiled children and a tired old horse save the day?Shay and Alexy must act before their fortress families and forest friends harm each other. It will take bravery, but Shay must try. After all, she gave the pouncer his freedom, but in return he gave her the greatest gift of all, a whole new kind of bravery: the courage to be her true self.

Combining the sacred with the secular, Frisch's installations show light as a visible manifestation of electricity, while engaging with energy as a metaphor for infinite possibility Using circuits, electrical components and industrial materials, Rome-based artist Shay Frisch (born 1963) arranges these elements into geometric forms that emit light, transforming inert objects into dynamic fields of energy. Halo reimagines the traditional notion of the religiously charged shape for a contemporary audience.

Now comes an exciting graphic novel revealing new adventures in the Uglies world--as seen through the eyes of Shay, Tally's rebellious best friend who's not afraid to break the rules, no matter the cost. A few months shy of her sixteenth birthday, Shay eagerly awaits her turn to become a Pretty--a rite-of-passage operation called "the Surge" that transforms ordinary Uglies into paragons of beauty. Yet after befriending the Crims, a group of fellow teens who refuse to take anything in society at face value, Shay starts to question the whole concept. And as the Crims explore beyond the monitored borders of Uglyville into the forbidden, ungoverned wild, Shay must choose between the perks of being Pretty and the rewards of being real.
