Film and special effects director Higuchi Shinji's mind revealed over more than 600 pages This is a collection of Higuchi Shinji's concept sketches for special effects appearing in movies such as Shin Ultraman, Shin Godzilla, Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo and more, in a single book. The ideas for filming sketched in these kokuyo sketchbooks, handy notebooks beloved in Japan for their portability, were sometimes filmed as is, while others were abandoned. Commentary on the value of these notes and sketches in communicating ideas to production staff, along with an extensive interview with Higuchi Shinji, are also included. The interview part has also been translated into English, making this a must for overseas readers and especially special effects fans. When Higuchi creates his works, he makes detailed simulations to work out how surrounding objects move when Godzilla moves, or how the monster gets blown away when Ultraman shoots his Ultra Beam, and so on. Comparing storyboards, it's fun to see which were adopted for the movies and which were rejected This book takes readers behind the scenes during the making of global hits like Shin Ultraman and Shin Godzilla, making this book a must-have not only for fans of these movies, but for all film creators.

Alkaloids are a large group of structurally complex natural products displaying a wide range of biological activities. The purpose of Alkaloids: A Treasury of Poisons and Medicines is to classify, for the first time, the alkaloids isolated from the natural sources until now. The book classifies all of the alkaloids by their biosynthetic origins. Of interest to the organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry communities involved in drug discovery and development, this book describes many alkaloids isolated from the medicinal plants, including those used in Japanese Kampo medicine.

The Cognitive Basis of Institutions: A Synthesis of Behavioral and Institutional Economics synthesizes modern research in behavioral economics with traditional institutional economics. This work emphasizes that institution and agent are inextricably linked, and that both cognitive and institutional processes coalesce to influence human decision-making. It integrates cognition and institution through the behavioral economics theoretical lens of bounded rationality. Methodologically, it develops game-theoretical, complexity and neuroeconomic solutions to unite study of the two areas. The work concludes by proposing general implications for the economic study of decisions using the cognitive-institutional approach, also providing specific recommendations for public policy.
Conquering the Fear of Freedom

Conquering the Fear of Freedom presents an analytical review of Japanese exchange rate policy from the end of World War II to the present. It examines how authorities, starting with the imposition of draconian controls over all international financial flows, moved toward eliminating virtually all state interference regulating foreign exchange transactions, including official intervention in the foreign exchange market. It describes how policy and institutional frameworks evolved, explains their domestic and international contexts, and assesses the impacts and consequences of policy actions. Following successful exchange rate-based stabilization in the early 1950s, Japan entered the world trading system with an overvalued currency, which helped perpetuate exchange and capital controls. As the culture of administrative control became ingrained, Japan took a decidedly gradualist approach to establishing current and capital account convertibility. The protracted capital account liberalization, coupled with slow domestic financial liberalization, created large swings in the yen's exchange rate when it was floated in the 1970s. Politicization by major trading partners of Japan's large bilateral trade surplus pressured authorities to subordinate domestic stability to external objectives. The ultimate outcome was costly: from the late 1980s, Japan successively experienced asset price inflation, a banking crisis, and economic stagnation. The book concludes by arguing that the shrinking trade surplus against the background of profound structural changes, the rise of China that has diminished the political intensity of any remaining bilateral economic issues, and the world's sympathy over two decades of deflation have given Japan, at least for now, the freedom to use macroeconomic policies for domestic purposes.
