Nearly a century ago, it was predicted that Kula, the exchange of shell valuables in the Massim region of Papua New Guinea, would disappear. Not only has this prophecy failed to come true, but today Kula is expanding beyond these island communities to the mainland and Australia. This book unveils the many deep motivations and meanings that lie behind the pursuit of Kula. Focusing upon the visually stimulating carved and painted prow boards that decorate canoes used by the Kula voyagers, Campbell argues that these designs comprise layers of encoded meaning. The unique colour associations and other formal elements speak to Vakutans about key emotional issues within their everyday and spiritual lives. How is mens participation in the Kula linked to their desire to achieve immortality? How do the messages conveyed by the canoe boards converge with those presented in Kula myths and rituals? In what ways do these systems of meaning reveal a male ideology that competes with the prevailing female ideology? Providing an alternative way of understanding the significance of Kula in the Trobriand Islands, The Art of Kula makes an influential new contribution to the ethnography of Papua New Guinea.

For the past several years, the U.S. Air Force has been using data from the Individual Contracting Action Report form, also known as the DD350, to analyze its goods and services expenditures. For this study, the authors collected data from Air Force contracting officers on a sample of fiscal year 2002 (FY02) DD350 records to assess the adequacy and accuracy of DD350 data for conducting expenditure analyses. The authors then extrapolated their findings from the sample to reflect all Air Force FY02 DD350 contract actions.

In the epistle to Philemon, St. Paul says, in effect, ""Dear Philemon: I have your runaway slave, Onesimus, who is returning to you with these letters; would you please free him and send him back to me, for he is very useful to me."" In the 1930s, John Knox began to suspect that the letters to Philemon and Colossians were related, and that the Onesimus named in both was also the Onesimus named as bishop of Ephesus in the letter of Ignatius to the Ephesians. The runaway slave would then have been a young man in the second quarter of the first century, and a bishop at the end of the century. It is conjectured that Onesimus collected the letters of Paul and published them as a group. This book is an imagined biography of Onesimus.

When I was very young and began to wonder about the world, I tried to answer the question, "Who are you?" My early answer was, "I am a child of God." When asked my name, I stated factually, "Barrow." I knew that's where I came from, the house I lived in and that's who I belonged to. I did not answer, Shirley. That name did not seem to belong to anyone else, but a stranger who did not accept my Sunday School answer, would know who I was if I answered Barrow. My family was right there with me: living proof of my identity. Years can be spent trying to know who you really are, not just what family and society dictate. Many years of experiences with neighbors, friends, and workmates complete a pleasing picture that was not easily seen in youth. The author invites the reader to share her journey and perhaps compare and consider their own unique quest of identity. As a young one the author chose to consider herself an Earl. This identity originated from her mother's playful naming of their humble home as Lee Heights. Mother and daughter were both trying to lift their spirits from the harsh reality of an unfinished, poorly heated shelter with no running water or electricity. Events in the story take place from the nineteen thirties up to the present day. Life stories are always unique and when shared, even with family members raised in the same household in the same era of time, one can discover savory surprises and hidden wonders. The Earl of Lee Heights is an invitation to the reader to explore the life of a New England colored girl and hopefully, be inspired you to share your own story with others.

Pediatric Psychiatry

Pediatric Psychiatry

Hale F Shirley

Geared to the needs of the pediatrician, this book is designed to orient him to the background of psychiatric knowledge so essential in his daily practice. Using his observation of 1,000 children brought to the Stanford University Pediatric-Psychiatric Unit as a guide, Dr. Shirley illustrates his discussion of physical, mental, and emotional disturbances with case histories, thus presenting the relationships between physician and parent, and physician and child in dynamic form, and stressing the individual nature of each case. Yet, despite the unique character of each behavior problem, there are common denominators in childhood development. Dr. Shirley sets forth the generally accepted norms of physical and mental growth and evaluates the usefulness of psychometric procedures, such as intelligence and performance tests, in determining the limits of the child's intellectual and physical capacities. Grade placement, discipline, eating and sleeping are universal trouble spots. Dr. Shirley suggests specific leads for the pediatrician to follow in the treatment of these problems, cautioning that success depends upon relieving parents of anxiety concerning themselves and their children in order that an atmosphere conducive to cooperation may exist in the home. Dr. Shirley's experience and training in both pediatrics and psychiatry doubly qualify him to discuss the basic elements of child psychiatry with authority and insight. Parents as well as physicians can profit by Dr. Shirley's wise, articulate, and practical interpretation of psychological concepts as they relate to the prevention and treatment of behavior problems in children.
