The fabrics here are African designs, made primarily in Africa, commercially, rather than by traditional methods. Most are contemporary, made of cotton; though varieties of rayon, wool, a blend, or synthetic also are present, as well as fabric with metallic thread or surface embellishment. Many examples are printed adaptations of traditional woven textiles, because the pattern and color and their effect are the essential qualities. This volume, arranged visually with a focus on design, color, and pattern, is a pictorial survey, which includes examples of simple, bold two and three-color designs, stripes, grid formats, and overall geometric patterns. The pictures serve as reference and inspiration to artists, designers, and all involved with fashion and fabric. The companion volume, African Prints, complements the designs featured in this book.

Set against the shifting tides of the 20th century American South, Shirley Kahn Friedman narrates Within the Ribbons & Out of the Loop through a spirited range of one-page autobiographical vignettes. First published as articles, the following collection contemplates an array of topics pertaining to Southern tradition and social grace, to lifelong marriage and the family unit, not to mention the nights gone by and the days yet to come. Beginning in her hometown of Pelham, Kahn Friedman's vignettes march across the campus greens of the University of Georgia, down the concrete streets of New York City, if only to return to the Empire State of the South, among the kaolin clay of Sandersville, Georgia. The result is a generational love-letter to the power of the written word, not only in telling the story of a life well-lived, but also in honoring the beloved memories that made its every second count.

Kah-Nee-Ta Hot Springs closed in 2018, so I am republishing this book in a less expensive version than the original memoir book published in 2014. The book has been written for the many people who have fond memories of Kah-Nee-Ta. Originally it was published as a tribute to document the early history of the Kah-nee-ta Hot Springs, where I lived with my adopted parents before they sold the land to the Confederated Tribe of Warm Springs, and a journey I took with my son to reconnect with the land in 1991. In the movie, Out of Africa, Isak Dineson, often sighed, "I have a farm in Africa," as if it were her lover. I generate the same love-feelings about the hot springs in Oregon, owned by my adoptive parents, Dr. and Mrs. F. B. Freeland, where I spent memorable parts of my childhood and adult years. Because I still feel my spirit roaming those hills, valleys, and streams, I needed to reconnect with that part of myself and to rekindle the spirit of my youth. May this book help you rekindle your memories.
The Adaptation Advantage

A guide for individuals and organizations navigating the complex and ambiguous Future of Work Foreword by New York Times columnist and best-selling author Thomas L. Friedman Technology is changing work as we know it. Cultural norms are undergoing tectonic shifts. A global pandemic proves that we are inextricably connected whether we choose to be or not. So much change, so quickly, is disorienting. It's undermining our sense of identity and challenging our ability to adapt. But where so many see these changes as threatening, Heather McGowan and Chris Shipley see the opportunity to open the flood gates of human potential—if we can change the way we think about work and leadership. They have dedicated the last 5 years to understanding how technical, business, and cultural shifts affecting the workplace have brought us to this crossroads, The result is a powerful and practical guide to the future of work for leaders and employees. The future can be better, but only if we let go of our attachment to our traditional (and disappearing) ideas about careers, and what a "good job" looks like. Blending wisdom from interviews with hundreds of executives, The Adaptation Advantage explains the profound changes happening in the world of work and posits the solution: new ways to think about careers that detach our sense of pride and personal identity from our job title, and connect it to our sense of purpose. Activating purpose, the authors suggest, will inherently motivate learning, engagement, empowerment, and lead to new forms of pride and identity throughout the workforce. Only when we let go of our rigid career identities can we embrace and appreciate the joys of learning and adapting to new realities—and help our organizations do the same. Of course, making this transition is hard. It requires leaders who can attract and motivate cognitively diverse teams fueled by a strong sense of purpose in an environment of psychological safety—despite fierce competition and external pressures. Adapting to the future of work has always called for strong leadership. Now, as a pandemic disrupts so many aspects of work, adapting is a leadership imperative. The Adaptation Advantage is an essential guide to help leaders meet that challenge.

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. ‘Cheerfulness, it would appear, is a matter which depends fully as much on the state of things within as on the state of things without and around us.’ Considered one of her less well-known novels, Shirley is Charlotte Brontë’s only historical work, set during the Napoleonic Wars. Wealthy and independent, Shirley is very different from her friend Caroline, who has few prospects and is dependent on her uncle. Struggling mill owner Robert Moore considers marriage to the monied Shirley in order to secure his financial future; however, it is Caroline who he loves, while Shirley has fallen for Robert’s brother, an impoverished tutor who is deemed an unsuitable match for her. Unsentimental, yet unflinching in her honest portrayal of love, class conflict and identity, Brontë uses the backdrop of her beloved Yorkshire to play out the tensions and dramas of a society facing social and industrial upheaval.

Struggling manufacturer Robert Moore has introduced labour saving machinery to his Yorkshire mill, arousing a ferment of unemployment and discontent among his workers. Robert considers marriage to the wealthy and independent Shirley Keeldar to solve his financial woes, yet his heart lies with his cousin Caroline, who, bored and desperate, lives as a dependent in her uncle's home with no prospect of a career. Shirley, meanwhile, is in love with Robert's brother, an impoverished tutor - a match opposed by her family. As industrial unrest builds to a potentially fatal pitch, can the four be reconciled? Set during the Napoleonic wars at a time of national economic struggles, Shirley (1849) is an unsentimental, yet passionate depiction of conflict between classes, sexes and generations.
