From a living treasure of Japanese Zen, an inspiring collection of teachings about the power of Buddhist practice to help you transform suffering and touch the marrow of your life. In this sparkling collection of teachings, Japanese Zen master Shundo Aoyama Roshi offers an earthy entry to the practice of Zen Buddhism. Or rather, she offers a myriad of entries, for Zen Seeds, as its title suggests, is comprised of brief chapters meant to plant seeds of wisdom and compassion in readers. Ranging from classical Zen material, such as the teachings of Dogen and koans, to anecdotes from Aoyama's fascinating life and from those of her many students, the book builds a profoundly compelling portrait of Zen, both in the lives of monastics and in those of the innumerable laypeople--artists, housewives, and businesspeople--whom Aoyama has spent her entire life helping. A pioneering female leader in the Soto Zen school, Aoyama demonstrates the power of practice not only for women, but for anyone seeking to lead a life of greater clarity and compassion.
The Ethics of Buddhism

The Ethics of Buddhism

Shundo Tachibana

A popular, if erroneous, conception of Buddhism has been that of self-negation or even nihilism, that is to say a religion that is negative in its basic attitude. In this classic work, Professor Tachibana instead argues that Buddhism is an essentially positive creed that provides an ethical philosophy that remains relevant irrespective of time and place. This is the 'Middle Way', with eight qualities or virtues - understanding, thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration - that form the core of the Buddhist philosophy of life. It is these great moral attributes that Professor Tachibana expounds as being the essence of Buddhism and providing a way of life based on tolerance and benevolence.

Transformation Of Shunde City: Pioneer Of China's Greater Bay Area
This book traces the transformation of Shunde, a city in China's Guangdong Province, from a historically agricultural county to a bustling manufacturing hub cum liveable city, in the past 41 years since the reform and opening-up of China in 1978. It discusses the economic success story of Shunde by using historical narratives to show how the district has combined its enterprising private sector with the highly capable reform-oriented local government to become a national beacon of reforms in the 1980s and 1990s. It looks into the holistic approach to development adopted by the Shunde government since the 1980s. It also explores the potential role of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA). It analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the district as compared to other competing areas in the GBA.

It is a love story, a delightful insightful window into the luminous world of mystics and a playful spoof on imaginary religious beliefs.Dilai Dalai is Hueng Tsiang, a Chinese mystic who in 630 A.D. writes 99 mysterious sutras on yak skin scrolls in Bodhi Cave, near Gazabha, India. Thirteen centuries later, Dilai Dalai's scrolls are still in Bodhi Cave and the sutras have become the cornerstone of a world-wide religion, "Dilai Dalai Jai", whose priests and nuns dress like clowns. It is now 1848, and a lovely young blonde angel, Bunny, and her suave devil boyfriend, Lloyd, provide comic relief as invisible guardians of two courageous 23-year-old mystics: Deva Leela in Northern India and Mark Trimble in the U.S.A.Mark's life is rural Missouri is shattered when his ten-year-old brother commits suicide. He loses all his money during a wild night in New Orleans and hooks up with a wagon train of eccentric Dilai Dalai Jai priests and nuns on their way to the West Coast. POWER GRID RESILIENCE AGAINST NATURAL DISASTERS How to protect our power grids in the face of extreme weather events The field of structural and operational resilience of power systems, particularly against natural disasters, is of obvious importance in light of climate change and the accompanying increase in hurricanes, wildfires, tornados, frigid temperatures, and more. Addressing these vulnerabilities in service is a matter of increasing diligence for the electric power industry, and as such, targeted studies and advanced technologies are being developed to help address these issues generally—whether they be from the threat of cyber-attacks or of natural disasters. Power Grid Resilience against Natural Disasters provides, for the first time, a comprehensive and systematic introduction to resilience-enhancing planning and operation strategies of power grids against extreme events. It addresses, in detail, the three necessary steps to ensure power grid success: the preparedness prior to natural disasters, the response as natural disasters unfold, and the recovery after the event. Crucially, the authors put forward state-of-the-art methods towards improving today’s practices in managing these three arenas. Power Grid Resilience against Natural Disasters readers will also find: Data, tables, and illustrations to supplement and clarify the points put forward in each chapter Case studies on realistic power systems and industry standards and practices related to the topics covered Potential to be a supplementary text in advanced level power engineering courses Power Grid Resilience against Natural Disasters will be of interest to specialists and engineers, as well as planners and operators from industry. It can also be a useful resource for senior undergraduate students, postgraduate students, researchers, and research libraries. More, it will appeal to all readers with a strong background in power system analysis, operation and control, optimization methods, the Markov decision process, and probability and statistics.
Reparation for Civilian Victims in Expeditionary Interventions

Reparation for Civilian Victims in Expeditionary Interventions

Civilian casualties in military operations involving major Western powers have started to attract public attention and debates. While the current ethical and legal frameworks, embodied in the Just War tradition (JWT) and International Humanitarian Law (IHL) respectively, prohibit direct attack on civilians, they permit harming civilians in indirect and proportionate attacks, so long as the attacks are considered legitimate. The emerging literature on ethics concerning civilian casualties points to the tension between the norms of non-combatant immunity and force protection and deals with complex ethical issues in contemporary counter-insurgency wars. This volume provides a theoretical explanation of why civilians accidentally harmed in expeditionary interventions should receive reparations. To do this, it looks beyond the current frameworks of JWT and IHL and focuses specifically on expeditionary interventions to analyse theoretical frameworks that govern compensation and reparation. Furthermore, this volume carefully examines whether arguments derived from the theory of liability and restorative justice could be applied to the context of accidental civilian casualties in armed conflict and discusses specific considerations in the context of contemporary counter-insurgency, such as whether victims should receive reparations where local insurgencies used 'human shields,' and how victims of direct attacks by insurgents should be treated. Appealing to a wide audience from multiple disciplines, this volume is designed for scholars and courses on military ethics, international relations, and peace studies.
