Der Sinn literarischer Texte lasst sich nicht bestimmen ohne die formalen Elemente mit in Betracht zu ziehen. Das trifft in sehr hohem Masse fur die romische Literatur zu, die uberdies anderen Formgesetzen gehorchte als die modernen Literaturen. In 25 Aufsatzen aus drei Jahrzehnten hat der Verfasser versucht, Aspekte romischer Werke aus dieser Sicht zu erlautern. Diese Aufsatze beziehen sich z.T. auf die Rhetorik, deren Kenntnis nicht nur fur die oratorische Literatur, sondern auch fur andere Gattungen notwendig ist und fur die Interpretation fruchtbar gemacht werden kann. Dasselbe gilt fur manche dramatische Strukturen, die auch in anderen poetischen Gattungen und in historischen Texten die Formgebung mitbestimmt haben. Wichtig ist ebenfalls, die durch Tradition und Eigenart bestimmte Haltung und Absichten der Autoren aus Prologen und anderen programmatischen Texten genau zu klaren. Manche Elemente zeigen einen topischen Charakter, der fur die Entwicklung der Gattungen und fur die Wirkungs- und Rezeptionsgeschichte wichtig war."

Dabei geht es in der Rede von einem Sinn keineswegs immer schon um innerweltliche Zwecke oder gar um jenseitige Ziele, sondern um ein vernünftiges Verständnis dessen, wovon die Rede ist, um eine rechte Haltung zu ihm oder wie im konkreten Fall des Sinns des menschlichen Lebens um eine im Ganzen gute Lebensgestaltung. Dazu ist der rechte Sinn von nicht unmittelbar verständlichen Rede- und Praxisformen angemessen auszulegen, ohne einfach die problematischen Formen aus der Welt zu schaffen oder allzu defensiv auszudeuten. So ist die Vermeidung der Rede von Seele und Geist zugunsten eines am Ende bloß einzelleiblichen Verhältnisses zu sich und zur Welt wie bei Spinoza und in allen Naturalismen ebenso verfehlt wie die Verharmlosung von Religion zu einer Mystik der Gelassenheit oder einer bloßen Kontingenzbewältigung in Totenfeiern und anderen Akten des Trostes. Das Religiöse betrifft auch nicht bloß eine existenzielle Haltung zum Wunder des Seins wie bei Wittgenstein.
