Balik-Tanaw: The Road Taken is the memoir of the distinguished Filipino critic, Soledad S. Reyes. This book is a record of Reyess journey of more than seven decades where personal narrative intertwines with people and events, with social and political movements with which the country sought to negotiate the treacherous shoals in the postwar years. The account carries a fair amount of biographical data (as lodged in the critics memory in the absence of diaries), from her childhood into her college years. But as the context becomes wider and more complex, the narrative takes on a more analytical frame as she tries to make sense of disparate experiences whirling about her in the tumult of the 1970s and beyond, and in the startling changes in the political landscape, local and global, that now grip the Filipino nation. This account, according to the author, is a story of an individual constructing a narrative that seeks to impose order upon chaos by retrieving aspects of the past and weaving a series of recalcitrant experiences into a coherent whole. Published in association with De La Salle University Publishing House
The essays in this book introduce de la Costa—the man, the historian, the humanist—to a new generation that should be intrigued enough by this book to go beyond it to sample and savor de la Costa's writings.

The days of husbands being the breadwinner and wives staying home are over as married women continue to join the workforce. What is this doing to the American marriage?Sociologist Soledad Espinoza explores the sociological, economic, psychological, and political facets of modern marriage and how it is changing gender relations in Modern Marriage Realities: Women's Work, Money, and Love in America. Her work takes a look at why families are moving away from the traditional breadwinner model, making gender roles in the workplace and family more equal. While there are other books on the sociology of marriage, family, gender, and work, Modern Marriage Realities addresses matters of race and appeals to a larger segment of the population. It presents an alternative to outdated studies that don't take into account how much work, family, and gender identity have changed. Espinoza analyzes the present state of modern marriage during one of the most radical periods of social change in American history. Useful for sociologists, college students, and economists alike, Modern Marriage Realities also serves as a guide for couples facing the challenge of entering a dual-earner marriage.

At eighteen, Soledad couldn't get away fast enough from her contentious family with their endless tragedies and petty fights. Two years later, she's an art student at Cooper Union with a gallery job and a hip East Village walk-up. But when Tia Gorda calls with the news that Soledad's mother has lapsed into an emotional coma, she insists that Soledad's return is the only cure. Fighting the memories of open hydrants, leering men, and slick-skinned teen girls with raunchy mouths and snapping gum, Soledad moves home to West 164th Street. As she tries to tame her cousin Flaca's raucous behavior and to resist falling for Richie -- a soulful, intense man from the neighborhood -- she also faces the greatest challenge of her life: confronting the ghosts from her mother's past and salvaging their damaged relationship. Evocative and wise, Soledad is a wondrous story of culture and chaos, family and integrity, myth and mysticism, from a Latina literary light.
