Peacebuilding and Spatial Transformation

Peacebuilding and Spatial Transformation

Annika Bjorkdahl; Stefanie Kappler

This book investigates peacebuilding in post-conflict scenarios by analysing the link between peace, space and place.By focusing on the case studies of Cyprus, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Ireland and South Africa, the book provides a spatial reading of agency in peacebuilding contexts. It conceptualises peacebuilding agency in post-conflict landscapes as situated between place (material locality) and space (the imaginary counterpart of place), analysing the ways in which peacebuilding agency can be read as a spatial practice. Investigating a number of post-conflict cases, this book outlines infrastructures of power and agency as they are manifested in spatial practice. It demonstrates how spatial agency can take the form of conflict and exclusion on the one hand, but also of transformation towards peace over time on the other hand. Against this background, the book argues that agency drives place-making and space-making processes. Therefore, transformative processes in post-conflict societies can be understood as materialising through the active use and transformation of space and place. This book will be of interest to students of peacebuilding, peace and conflict studies, human geography and IR in general.

Peace and the Politics of Memory

This important book provides new understandings of how the politics of memory impacts peace in societies transitioning from a violent past. It does so by developing a theoretical approach focusing on the intersection of sites, agency, narratives, and events in memory-making. Drawing on rich empirical studies of mnemonic formations in Cyprus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda, South Africa and Cambodia, the book speaks to a broad audience. The in-depth, cross-case analysis shows that inclusivity, pluralism, and dignity in memory politics are key to the construction of a just peace. The book contributes crucial and timely knowledge about societies that grapple with the painful legacies of the past and advances the study of memory and peace. An electronic edition of this book is freely available under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND) licence.

Stefanie Bürkle: Imaginations of Venice
Venice exists not only as a place but as a circulating image—reproduced endlessly, mirrored across the globe, and embedded in cultural memory. For over 25 years, Stefanie Bürkle has photographed both the city and its replicas, exploring how Venice becomes a projection for spatial desire. Venice exists not only as a place but as a circulating image—reproduced endlessly, mirrored across the globe, and embedded in cultural memory. For over 25 years, Stefanie Bürkle has photographed both the city and its replicas, exploring how Venice becomes a projection for spatial desire. Venice unfolds not as a single city but as a network of imaginations—reflected in fragments, fictions, and facades. This volume brings together analog and digital photographs from her long-term archive, accompanied by texts by Kristina Lovaas. Additionally, there is a fold-out map of Bürkle's Imagination of Venice atlas. The publication is part of the artistic research project Imaginations of Venice, within CRC 1265 Re-Figuration of Spaces, Technische Universität Berlin.
