Increasingly, neural networks are used and implemented in a wide range of fields and have become useful tools in probabilistic analysis and prediction theory. This book—unique in the literature—studies the application of neural networks to the analysis of time series of sea data, namely significant wave heights and sea levels. The particular problem examined as a starting point is the reconstruction of missing data, a general problem that appears in many cases of data analysis. Specific topics covered include: * Presentation of general information on the phenomenology of waves and tides, as well as related technical details of various measuring processes used in the study. * Description of the model of wind waves (WAM) used to determine the spectral function of waves and predict the behavior of SWH (significant wave heights); a comparison is made of the reconstruction of SWH time series obtained by means of neural networks algorithms versus SWH computed by WAM. * Principles of artificial neural networks, approximation theory, and extreme-value theory necessary to understand the main applications of the book. * Application of artificial neural networks (ANN) to reconstruct SWH and sea levels (SL). * Comparison of the ANN approach and the approximation operator approach, displaying the advantages of ANN. * Examination of extreme-event analysis applied to the time series of sea data in specific locations. * Generalizations of ANN to treat analogous problems for other types of phenomena and data. This book, a careful blend of theory and applications, is an excellent introduction to the use of ANN, which may encourage readers to try analogous approaches in other important application areas. Researchers, practitioners, and advanced graduate students in neural networks, hydraulic and marine engineering, prediction theory, and data analysis will benefit from the resultsand novel ideas presented in this useful resource.

Stefano Guazzo «La Civil Conversazione» in Der Franzoesischen Kultur Des 16. Und 17. Jahrhunderts
Jahrhunderts ihren Niederschlag finden.

Stefano Cerio (*1962) directs his attention to alternative worlds: for his elaborate series he takes pictures of recreational paradises—ski arenas, cruises, water and fun parks. For the artist, Italian street altars even count among these colorful illusory worlds that people create for the purpose of escaping from everyday life. Yet in his cool photographs Cerio without exception exposes the fun rides and the adventure pools in the off-season and therefore devoid of visitors; the ruptures, the bleakness, and the senselessness that become visible behind the amusing façades. For Chinese Fun, the photographer visited a whole range of recreational parks, water landscapes, and sports grounds in Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Hong Kong. His centrally organized compositions are made with a plate camera and document selected absurd arrangements—from a concrete fruit basket as large as a house to the looped tracks of an enormous roller coaster in the interior courtyard of an office complex. The ground is covered in snow, the horizon a dark line of mountains; low milky clouds hide the sky. In the foreground, a shapeless form, a strange sagging mass of bright colors—red, blue and yellow—stirs as it fills with air. In less than a minute a popular fairground attraction appears: an inflatable, rotund form, awkward and genial, shaped like a double slide or a springboard, the kind often seen in children’s play areas, at fairs and village gatherings. Along with other inflatables in the same vein—a chubby castle complete with dragon, a football pitch—the slide is part of the bizarre landscape conjured up in Stefano Cerio’s Aquila, a series of photographs taken in Abruzzo at different times of year and in highly impactful settings not far from L’ Aquila, on the plains of Campo Felice, Campo Imperatore and Pescasseroli.
Stefano Benazzo
Stefano Benazzo's evocative images of shipwrecks--the remains of magnificent sea cathedrals, bound to inevitable decline. Through powerful images of wrecks shot over decades on the world's coastlines, Italian photographer Stefano Benazzo brings again to life the sailors, as well as the immigrants. The duty of memory prompts us to keep with grateful remembrance the sailors' endeavor and traditions. Wrecks are the evidence of men who have been cornerstones of economic, social, and maritime history, as well as of their courage and suffering.Benazzo's images settle for future generations the features of ships that elements will destroy more and more. The distance makes it difficult to approach wrecks, and it is nearly impossible to transport them to museums.Benazzo's photographs lead us to pry deeply into ourselves, bringing out our richness and our diversified nature. In the author's imagination, these wrecks seem to be miraculously ready to sail again with perseverance and to fulfill their mission: they express the hope of salvation and life.

'Better than Pele' - Diego Maradona'One of the greatest footballers ever.' - Sir Alex FergusonPele, Best and Maradona everyone has heard of, but to the true football cognoscenti Alfredo Di Stefano, the magician behind Real Madrid’s five European Cups in a row, is the greatest of them all. Over 20 years, Di Stéfano was the guiding force behind three teams in three countries: at River Plate in his native Argentina; at Millonarios of Bogotá in Colombia; and then in 1953, after one of the most bitter transfer tug-of-wars in sporting history, Real Madrid. There he became football’s first global icon, nicknamed the striking ‘Blond Arrow’ for his powerful stamina, tactical versatility and precision goal scoring. He would lead Madrid as a team whose playing style others learnt from, whose stylishness was envied and whose widespread appreciation elsewhere help portray Franco’s otherwise isolated and right-wing Spain in a more flattering light. By the time he retired, Di Stefano has changed Spain as a nation, culturally and politically, and his rebellious pioneering career set new benchmarks for his sport in the epoch of perhaps football’s greatest transformation. This is his complete story, including candid and exclusive interviews highlighting his journey from humble beginnings to emerging as one of the first global sport superstars that we so commonly see today.
