In this series, a contemporary poet selects and introduces a poet of the past. By their choice of poems and by the personal and critical reactions they express in their prefaces, the editors offer insights into their own work as well as providing an accessible and passionate introduction to some of the greatest poets of our literature.Robert Herrick was born in London, in 1591, the seventh child of a prosperous goldsmith. He graduated from St. John's College, Cambridge in 1617, and became a Cavalier poet in the mould of Ben Jonson, mixing in literary circles in London. He was ordained in 1623 and subsequently appointed by Charles I to the living of Dean Prior in Devon, where he lived in the reluctant seclusion of country life and wrote some of his best work. In 1647, under the Commonwealth, Herrick was expelled from the priory and returned to London, where he published his major work, Hesperides, the following year. With the restoration of Charles II in 1660 he was returned to Devon and died a bachelor in 1674.

Stephen Romer's essays range from the key figures of French and English Modernism to the contemporary practice of poetry, and its translation. At the heart of Chaos and the Clean Line is an enquiry into the talismanic power that a source of order can possess for the poet who lives in a disordered world. It is what drives Mallarm 's 'fury against the formless'. Sometimes it may be found in a longed-for sense of psychological detachment, as when Laforgue invents the figure of Pierrot. Or it may be the craft and genius of a former age, safely removed from the alienating cities of today, such as Eliot finds in Dante, or in Gautier's chiseled verse. For Pierre Reverdy, the clean line of order may come from a Cubist painting; for Ezra Pound, it may be an epiphany of angled sunlight fallen on stone in Provence; for Apollinaire, the shockingly original analogies he draws between physical eroticism and trench warfare.Stephen Romer is Associate Professor of English at the University of Tours, and Lecturer in French at Brasenose College, Oxford.

An intensely personal and profoundly moving review of Bonnefoy’s childhood memories. In December 2015, six months before his death at the age of 93, Yves Bonnefoy concluded what was to be his last major text in prose, L’écharpe rouge, translated here as The Red Scarf. In this unique book, described by the poet as "an anamnesis"—a formal act of commemoration—Bonnefoy undertakes, at the end of his life, a profoundly moving exegesis of some fragments written in 1964. These fragments lead him back to an unspoken, lifelong anxiety: “My most troubling memory, when I was between ten and twelve years old, concerns my father, and my anxiety about his silence.” Bonnefoy offers an anatomy of his father’s silence, and of the melancholy that seemed to take hold some years into his marriage to the poet’s mother. At the heart of this book is the ballad of Elie and Hélène, the poet’s parents. It is the story of their lives together in the Auvergne, and later in Tours, seen through the eyes of their son—the solitary boy’s intense but inchoate experience, reviewed through memories of the now elderly man. What makes The Red Scarf indispensable is the intensely personal nature of the material, casting its slant light, a setting sun, on all that has gone before.

This is a pictorial record of the Chartist Movement. Photography was in its infancy in those years and the only photographic record of a Chartist gathering is of the last of the great meetings in April 1848. Pictures of the Chartists themselves as they appeared in those years are all from wood or metal engravings mostly published by Chartist newspapers. An introduction provides a background to the pictures and their captions.

Hostile MPs, police spies, mass arrests, picked juries, jails that made prisoners ill and killed them - these were just some of the difficulties faced by working people who campaigned for the vote and some measure of equality before the law in the early Victorian period. Much of the best scholarship on the Chartists has been published in scholarly journals and has therefore been unavailable to the general reader. This volume presents a selection of key essays: Eileen Yeo on Christianity and Chartism; Christopher Godfrey on Chartist prisoners; Paul Pickering on selling Chartist goods and merchandise; Robert Hall on remembering Chartism; Malcolm Chase on Chartism in Middlesborough and Stockton; Stephen Roberts on Chartism in Leicestershire; Philip Howell on Chartist lecturers

With this new collection of poems, Life in Monochrome, Stephen Robert Kuta secures his place as Instagram's master wordsmith. With his unrivalled lyricism and musicality, Kuta harnesses the short form poem in a way few other writers have, transforming and elevating the everyday into something truly beautiful.Life in Monochrome delves deep into every emotion, proving the universality of human feeling and connecting with readers in an incredibly meaningful way. With poems which share heartbreak, rage, joy and love, Kuta lays himself bare and shares the depths of his feeling with his audience, encouraging them to explore their own emotions on a similarly profound level. With Instagram a very visual and seemingly transient medium, the beauty of these short poems lies in their ability to condense complex ideas and thoughts into only a handful of words. In just a few sparse lines, Kuta vividly captures the human experience and distils it into stunning poetry which appeals to both the eye and ear. This truly is verbal craftsmanship on a level which is extremely rare, with poems reflecting a myriad of feelings which will appeal to readers of all ages and backgrounds. Some are achingly poignant, others express the depth and complexity of love, but all are graced with Kuta's unique way with words. In an era when we're warned of shorter attention spans, these neat and concise lyrics sing from both the page and screen and cannot help but capture their readers' hearts and imaginations.

One of the greatest pitchers of his era, William Arthur "Candy" Cummings was born in 1848, when baseball was in its infancy. In the 1870s, Candy's invention, the curveball, played a transformative role and earned him a place in the Hall of Fame. Drawing on extensive research, this first full-length biography traces Candy's New England heritage and chronicles his rise to the top, from pitching for amateur teams in mid-1860s Brooklyn to playing in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players--the first major league--and then the newly-formed National League. A critical examination of the evidence and competing claims reveals that Cummings was, indeed, the originator of the curveball.
