The Gospel of Mark and the Roman-Jewish War of 66-70 CE

This book interprets Mark's gospel in light of the Roman-Jewish War of 66-70 CE. Locating the authorship of Mark's gospel in rural Galilee or southern Syria after the fall of Jerusalem and the temple, and after Vespasian's enthronement as the new emperor, Kimondo argues that Mark's first hearers--people who lived through and had knowledge of the important events of the war--may have evaluated Mark's story of Jesus as a contrast to Roman imperial values. He makes an intriguing case that Jesus' proclamation as the Messiah in the villages of Caesarea Philippi set up a deliberate contrast between Jesus's teaching and Vespasian's proclamation of himself as the world's divine ruler. He suggests that Mark's hearers may have interpreted Jesus' liberative campaign in Galilee as a deliberate contrast to Vespasian's destructive military campaigns in the area. Jesus's teachings about wealth, power, and status while on the way to Jerusalem may have been heard as contrasts to Roman imperial values; hence, the entire story of Jesus may have been interpreted an anti-imperial narrative. ""Carefully researched and clearly written, Kimondo's book stands at the nexus of historiography, postcolonial theory, and rigorous textual analysis. Sober in its conclusions even as it is wide-ranging in its implications for the field, this book will be of deep interest to New Testament scholars as well as those seeking to learn from anti-imperial discourses of the past for the purposes of faithful resistance in the present. Highly recommended."" --Robert Saler, Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis ""In my work with the Bible in local communities of the poor and marginalised there is an immediate resonance with almost any section of the Gospel of Mark. Kimondo offers us a compelling analysis of why this is the case, providing a detailed interpretation of Mark as 'good news' for the economically oppressed in the context of war and empire. Mark's Jesus offers an egalitarian alternative to the ruling elites of both Jerusalem and Rome."" --Gerald West, University of Kwazulu-Natal ""Stephen Kimondo makes the case that Mark's gospel should be read simultaneously with the Jewish historian Josephus. Aspects of Mark's gospel make the most sense when read in the context of the Roman-Jewish War of 66-70 CE, including comparisons between Rome's bloody empire and God's life-giving rule, Jesus' activity as a campaign compared to Vespasian's campaign in Galilee, and the values of God's empire taught and embodied by Jesus compared to values shown by Roman authorities. Kimondo's mastery of both Josephus and Mark is a gift to students and teachers alike."" --Peter Perry, Fuller Theological Seminary ""In a carefully organized way, Kimondo's book has successfully made a contrast between the violent and pompous Vespasian military campaigns and entrances in cities, that were celebrated to be 'good news', as depicted by Josephus, and the redemptive, non-violent good news without splendor associated with the onset of God's empire, based on the proclamation, teachings, and redemptive deeds of Jesus as depicted by Mark's gospel. This book is well-presented, insightful, and worth the read of any New Testament scholar interested in studies of the early church."" --Elia Shabani Mligo, Teofilo Kisanji University, Mbeya Tanzania Stephen Simon Kimondo is Lecturer in New Testament studies at the University of Iringa in Tanzania. He received his PhD from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.

Many of you are having that experience now, and many more will experience it in the future.You... we... are most definitely not alone.Still, our willingness to speak openly to others about communicating through the veil is often accompanied by fears of disbelief and rejection from friends and family members. We hope that our book will reassure and comfort you, and that it will empower and encourage you to share your own stories of discovering that after life, there is indeed more. Prayers that lead to a growing intimacy with God. Heart-learning, not just more head knowledge. Walking conversations with God. These are a few of the fruits produced by a spiritual practice called holy walks. Rooted in the ancient art of praying the Psalms, holy walks enrich our understanding and practice of prayer by integrating prayer-walking and learning the Psalms by heart. In a practical, deeply personal, and at times humorous manner, Steve Simon shares how holy walks have transformed his own prayer life and revitalized his walk with God--and how they can do the same for the reader. In addition to explaining the spiritual practice of holy walks, Holy Walks also provides an introduction to the book of Psalms, which will be especially valuable for those with limited knowledge of the Bible. Exploring five types of psalms, Holy Walks describes how God uses them to shape our heart in life-giving ways no matter what peaks we're climbing or valleys we're traversing. The book concludes with a discussion on what the Psalms teach about God's relationship with us as our creator, leader, and rescuer. ""Steve Simon walks us through the deep waters of the Psalms. He invites us to rejoice and to lament, to plead and to praise, to question God and to question our own hearts. And as we read his book we become baptized in the prayers that have strengthened the faithful for 3,000 years."" --Dann Stouten, Regional Coordinator, Reformed Church in America, and author of The Gate ""Christians are a strange combination of earthly and spiritual. They are both, and all the time. So walking a dog and praying the Psalms seems the perfect image of what it means to be Christian. Steve Simon captures this tension in his Holy Walks. He walks his dog and prays the Psalms every day. Holy Walks is an extended meditation on that practice."" --Gerald L. Sittser, Professor of Theology, Whitworth University, and author of A Grace Disguised and Water from a Deep Well ""In Holy Walks, Steve Simon invites us to discover fresh movement--literally--in our prayer life, showing a way to get out of our heads and our houses and pray with our whole bodies in God's creation. . . . Anyone looking for more than 'shopping-list prayers' in their conversations with God will find a wise guidebook here."" --Steven Lympus, Pastor of Shadle Park Presbyterian Church in Spokane, and author of The House of DunRaven ""This delightful book provides a roadmap for how ordinary routines like dog walking can become transformative times spent in God's Word."" --Benjamin Brody, DMA, Professor of Church Music and Chair, Department of Music, Whitworth University Stephen C. Simon is a pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and has served churches in west Michigan, northern Idaho, and eastern Washington. He also spent twelve years in college ministry with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He and his wife Carol have two sons of whom they're extremely proud, two wonderful daughters-in-law, and two fantastic granddaughters. Plus, a couple of beloved dogs, whom you'll meet in the book.

This latest comprehensive work on Simon Magus lends new impetus to the investigation of Early Christianity and questions surrounding the origin and nature of Gnosticism. Major contributions of this study include: (1), a departure from the traditional exegesis of Acts 8, 5-24 (the first narrative source of Simon), and the later following reports of ancient Christian writers; (2), an overview of the literature of Graeco-Roman antiquity to determine the contribution of "magic" and "the Magoi" in the development of perceptions and descriptions of Simon; and (3), the inclusion of social science explanation models and modern estimations of "identity", in a creative approach to questions surrounding the phenomenon of Simon.

Since the 1970s, the name Stephen King has been synonymous with horror. His vast number of books has spawned a similar number of feature films and TV shows, and together they offer a rich opportunity to consider how one writer’s work has been adapted over a long period within a single genre and across a variety of media-and what that can tell us about King, about adaptation, and about film and TV horror. Starting from the premise that King has transcended ideas of authorship to become his own literary, cinematic, and televisual brand, Screening Stephen King explores the impact and legacy of over forty years of King film and television adaptations.Simon Brown first examines the reasons for King’s literary success and then, starting with Brian De Palma’s Carrie, explores how King’s themes and style have been adapted for the big and small screens. He looks at mainstream multiplex horror adaptations from Cujo to Cell, low-budget DVD horror films such as The Mangler and Children of the Corn franchises, non-horror films, including Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption, and TV works from Salem’s Lot to Under the Dome. Through this discussion, Brown identifies what a Stephen King film or series is or has been, how these works have influenced film and TV horror, and what these influences reveal about the shifting preoccupations and industrial contexts of the post-1960s horror genre in film and TV.
