1932: Stories of the People and Times of the Great Depression
1932 Book of Short StoriesIf you were born in 1920, in 1932 you were twelve years old. You would probably have some memories of the Great Depression. By the year 2018 you would be 98 years old. So almost all firsthand accounts of that time are lost to history. But after our recent downturn of 2008 many people in the country can more readily identify with that time in our history. The stories in this book depict many of the problems people faced in that terrible time and hopefully show the courage and kindness of a great many of them. Story list(15): Morgan, The Job Interview, Judy and The Duke and Bill, Passing Through, -Dangerous at a Mile, Working at the Brickyard, Lily and Me, A Broken Rule, Tommy Dugan and the Duck, Butterfields, Chester and the Giant, Waiting for a Ride, The Soup Kitchen, Lost and Found, Avalon Corner

In my first book titled '1932' I had a short story titled 'Morgan'. In that story I had two main characters, a 13 year old girl named Morgan and a 68 year old ex-lawman named JC Rudik. In that story we lost JC very early on. Now in this book we tell the story of the rest of his and his family's life from right after the Civil War to 1932, their struggles to make a living in very hard financial times and their fight to always keep their family together in a time of unprecedented change in America.

What and how we eat are two of the most persistent choices we face in everyday life. Whatever we decide on though, and however mundane our decisions may seem, they will be inscribed with information both about ourselves and about our positions in the world around us. Yet, food has only recently become a significant and coherent area of inquiry for cultural studies and the social sciences.Food and Cultural Studies re-examines the interdisciplinary history of food studies from a cultural studies framework, from the semiotics of Barthes and the anthropology of Levi-Strauss to Elias' historical analysis and Bourdieu's work on the relationship between food, consumption and cultural identity. The authors then go on to explore subjects as diverse as food and nation, the gendering of eating in, the phenomenon of TV chefs, the ethics of vegetarianism and food, risk and moral panics.

One day, we'll all be myths. During a time that man has forgotten, a mighty ship was laid to rest beneath the rolling waves of the Aegean Sea. With her, the secrets and powers of the Gods lay, waiting to be discovered...Orla Nyren is a spy, a mercenary, a stone cold killer. The last thing she will ever do is let her guard down. Forced into time off from the Ogmios Team, she finds herself in unfamiliar territory: vacationing with civilians in the Peloponnese. A late night encounter with a handsome stranger offers her a glimpse into a side of life she has never allowed herself to imagine: normalcy, freedom, love. But old secrets refuse to stay buried and when the ship is exhumed, her vacation takes a drastic turn. With the help of fellow team member, Jude Lethe, Orla embarks on an adventure that will return her to the myths of old in which the unthinkable is made real and the horrors of man's resolve threaten to seal the doom of humanity. It begs the question: how far is one willing to go before they upset the Gods? Will tempting fate simply result in proving that we make our own, or will it anger the Gods beyond any chance of absolution?

This collection features three peer-reviewed reviews on managing arthropod pests in cereals. The first chapter discusses key arthropod pests of cereals, including Hessian fly, orange wheat blossom midge, bird cherry oat aphid, greenbug, Russian wheat aphid, sunn pest, wheat stem sawfly and wheat curl mite. The chapter provides a detailed case study for each arthropod pest, exploring the pest’s life cycle, its host plants and status as a wheat pest, best practices for managing populations, as well as our current understanding of plant susceptibility and plant resistance. The second chapter highlights the economic importance of corn/maize to the United States economy, citing that around 37.7 million hectares of land was used to grow the crop in 2021. As a result of its economic contribution, farmers are required to have an informed understanding of important pest species affecting the crop. The chapter considers recent advances in monitoring of native and invasive pests of corn and includes case studies on the European corn borer, corn earworm, western bean cutworm and corn rootworm to demonstrate the effective implementation of insect pest monitoring systems. The final chapter reviews the recent emergence of the Fescue aphid/grass aphid as an invasive pest of small grains outside of its native range of western Europe and the British Isles. The chapter considers the biology and management of the pest, its appearance and identification, its pest status and damage, as well as its potential for host plant resistance.

'What's in the box Mum' asked inquisitive Stuart. 'And what box would that be, ' answered his Mum Ann. 'That box you have in your hand Mum, the square box.' 'This square box in my hand, this square blue box that's got a wee boy's name on the front and looks like it could be some sort of birthday present but it's for a wee boy called Stuart, so do we know a wee boy called Stuart and if we do, is it his birthday today' 'That was almost funny Mum, ' replied seven year old Stuart and when she saw how he was standing with his hands on his hips she asked herself if he really was only seven today but she never had time to ask herself anything else because as quick as a flash he was by her side and pleading for all he was worth for the blue box he knew was for hi
