Screamin' Jay Hawkins released "I Put a Spell On You" in 1956. The song, that never made it to the charts when it was released, would eventually be covered several hundred times by the likes of Nina Simone, Credence Clearwater Revival, and Marilyn Manson; Jeff Beck and Joss Stone's version even received a Grammy nomination in 2010. It was selected as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and was added to Rolling Stones' list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Hawkins' music and outlandish onstage persona inspired generations of musicians after him. And yet, little is known of the man and little can be taken at face value. Hawkins interpreted his past with a poetic license to kill, a magical amalgam of his own making--creating disparate stories alternatively terrible or sympathetic at his will. I Put A Spell On You brings together hundreds of interviews with Hawkins, his family, bandmates, and contemporaries. For those needing a towpath of truth, footnotes abound to tether you through. Here is Screamin' Jay Hawkins's story--mean, heartbreaking, and magic.

Hobnobbing for Ghosts II: A Lyric and Literature Junkie Travels the World is a collection of travel articles mostly written over the past decade by veteran journalist, author and travel writer Steve Bergsman. The focus of the stories is not so much a straight forward what to do or where to go. Rather, the details are a lighthearted attempt to explain why you would want to go to a place like Muscle Shoals, Alabama, or sail down the Mekong River in Southeast Asia - all based on who had preceded you there or what historical incident took place there or what cultural collective arose out of that location. For example, serious tourists might not put Wilkesboro, North Carolina, on their places-to-go list, but the small town boasts a unique history. In one of the odd, post-Civil War, romantic-tragedies, a man named Tom Dula killed another person and was hanged. The story became a ballad, which was picked up by folksingers The Kingston Trio, in the 1950s, and became the Number One song in the country. The jail where "Tom Dooley" was held before execution is an actual place and still can be visited. Or, on the international front, the tiny European country of Andorra has transformed itself in one large shopping mall, but in its old incarnation, songs, books, plays were written about this pretty spot in the Pyrenees.Motion pictures are part of our collective memory, which is why the James Bond thriller Dr. No evolved from Port Antonio, Jamaica; the John Ford classic The Quiet Man is fondly recalled in Cong, Ireland; The Wave comes to mind when visiting Flam, Norway; and the original cinematic treasure about the Mekong River is the Hedy Lamarr-Robert Taylor romance, Lady of the Tropics. This type of essay about a cultural journey has been called literary travel, but Steve Bergsman, in his second volume of articles, pivots slightly spending many a night in towns and cities where composers and rock stars hung their hat, and wrote compositions such as "In The Hall of the Mountain King" or pop magic like "Take It Easy."Hobnobbing With Ghosts II is a wild, informative and fun ride, so buckle up and go see what America and world has to offer even if you never leave your comfy-chair.

Recording and performing in the early 1950s, Jesse Belvin, Guitar Slim, and Johnny Ace produced at least thirteen top-25 hits between the three of them. All but forgotten in the annals of rock ‘n’ roll, these artists have influenced musicians as varied as Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and generations of soul singers. Their songs have been covered by artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Luther Vandross, and Paul Simon. In Earth Angels: The Short Lives and Controversial Deaths of Three R&B Pioneers Steve Bergsman affords readers a view of the lives and careers of three influential artists who left us much too soon. Bergsman notes in his introduction that this lack of notoriety is partly due to their untimely deaths. Jesse Belvin, a crooner whose “Goodnight My Love” became the closing theme to famed disc jockey Alan Freed’s radio shows, was killed in a head-on collision along with his wife just after performing at the first racially integrated concert in Little Rock, Arkansas; he was 27. Guitar Slim, whose million-selling song “The Things I Used to Do” has been re-recorded by both Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, died in New York City at the age of 32 due to pneumonia that was possibly induced by alcoholism. Johnny Ace’s “Pledging My Love” spent ten weeks at the top position on Billboard’s R&B chart. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 25. Bergsman’s meticulous research and entertaining narrative style seeks to restore the credit denied these artists by their untimely deaths.

In All I Want Is Loving You: Popular Female Singers of the 1950s, author Steve Bergsman focuses on the white, female artists of the 1950s, a time that predated the chart-topping girl groups of the early 1960s. These popular performers, many of whom graduated out of the big bands of the 1940s, impacted popular music in a huge way. As the last bastion of traditional pop and the last sirens of swing, they undeniably shined in the spotlight. Yet these singers’ fame dimmed relatively quickly with the advent of rock ’n’ roll. A fortunate few, like Doris Day, Patti Page, Peggy Lee, and Debbie Reynolds, experienced some of their biggest hits in the late 1950s, and Eydie Gormé broke out in the 1960s. The luckiest, including Dinah Shore and Rosemary Clooney, ventured to television with varying degrees of success. Others would become major attractions at nightclubs in Las Vegas or, like Teresa Brewer, shift into the jazz world.Though the moment did not last, these performers were best-selling singers, darlings of the disk jockeys, and the frenetic heartbeat of fan clubs during their heyday. In a companion volume, Bergsman has written the history of African American women singers of the same era. These Black musicians transitioned more easily as a new form of music, rock ’n’ roll, skyrocketed in popularity. In both books, Bergsman reintroduces readers to these talented singers, offering a thorough look at their work and turning up the volume on their legacy.

In What a Difference a Day Makes: Women Who Conquered 1950s Music, Steve Bergsman highlights the Black female artists of the 1950s, a time that predated the chart-topping girl groups of the early 1960s. Many of the singers of this era became wildly famous and respected, and even made it into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame. However, there were many others, such as Margie Day, Helen Humes, Nellie Lutcher, Jewel King, and Savannah Churchill, who made one or two great records in the 1950s and then disappeared from the scene. The era featured former jazz and blues singers, who first came to prominence in the 1940s, and others who pioneered early forms of rock ’n’ roll.In a companion volume, Bergsman has written the history of white women singers of the same era. Although song styles paralleled, the careers of Black and white female singers of the period ran in very different directions as the decade progressed. The songs of African American vocalists like Dinah Washington and Etta James were R&B segregated or covered by pop singers in the early and mid-1950s but burst into prominence in the last part of the decade and well into the 1960s. White singers, on the other hand, excelled in the early 1950s but saw their careers decline with the advent of rock music. In this volume, Bergsman takes an encyclopedic look at both the renowned and the sadly faded stars of the 1950s, placing them and their music back in the spotlight.

Clyde McPhatter (1932–1972) was the golden voice behind a musical revolution—a soaring tenor whose electrifying performances helped define the sound of early rock ‘n’ roll. From his breakthrough with the Dominoes to founding the Drifters and launching a solo career, McPhatter left an indelible mark on American music, becoming one of the few artists inducted twice into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Born into the gospel traditions of North Carolina, McPhatter brought spiritual intensity to the rhythm-and-blues stage. His lead vocals on "Sixty Minute Man" and "Have Mercy Baby" helped transform doo-wop into a national sensation. At Atlantic Records, he not only led the Drifters to chart success with songs like "Money Honey," but also helped shape the label’s rise as a cornerstone of American R&B. As a solo artist, McPhatter continued to break barriers with crossover hits like "A Lover’s Question" and "Treasure of Love." But behind the spotlight, he faced mounting pressures—from the isolating toll of fame to speculation about his personal life—all of which contributed to his struggles with depression and alcoholism. Drawing on exclusive interviews with family members and close associates, Have Mercy Baby offers the most comprehensive portrait to date of a musical pioneer. More than a voice of his generation, Clyde McPhatter laid the groundwork for soul, rock, and R&B artists for decades to come. His influence still echoes, even as his life reminds us of the cost of being ahead of one’s time.

In 1963, sisters Barbara Ann and Rosa Hawkins and their cousin Joan Marie Johnson traveled from the segregated South to New York City under the auspices of their manager, former pop singer Joe Jones. With their wonderful harmonies, they were an immediate success. To this day, the Dixie Cups' greatest hit, ""Chapel of Love,"" is considered one of the best songs of the past sixty years. The Dixie Cups seemed to have the world on a string. Their songs were lively and popular, singing on such topics as love, romance, and Mardi Gras, including the classic ""Iko Iko."" Behind the stage curtain, however, their real-life story was one of cruel exploitation by their manager, who continued to harass the women long after they finally broke away from his thievery and assault. Of the three young women, no one suffered more than the youngest, Rosa Hawkins, who was barely out of high school when the New Orleans teens were discovered and relocated to New York City. At the peak of their success, Rosa was a naïve songstress entrapped in a world of abuse and manipulation. Chapel of Love: The Story of New Orleans Girl Group the Dixie Cups explores the ups and downs of one of the most successful girl groups of the early 1960s. Telling their story for the first time, in their own words, Chapel of Love reintroduces the Louisiana Music Hall of Famers to a new audience.
