Practical Computing for Biologists

Practical Computing for Biologists

Steven H. D. Haddock; Casey W. Dunn

Oxford University Press Inc
2010
nidottu
Published by Sinauer Associates, an imprint of Oxford University Press. Increasingly, scientists find themselves facing exponentially larger data sets and analyses without suitable tools to deal with them. Many biologists end up using spreadsheet programs for most of their data-processing tasks and spend hours clicking around or copying and pasting, and then repeating the process for other data files. Practical Computing for Biologists shows you how to use many freely available computing tools to work more powerfully and effectively. The book was born out of the authors' own experience in developing tools for their research and helping other biologists with their computational problems. Although many of the techniques are relevant to molecular bioinformatics, the motivation for the book is much broader, focusing on topics and techniques that are applicable to a range of scientific endeavors. Twenty-two chapters organized into six parts address these topics (and more; see Contents): * Searching with regular expressions * The Unix command line * Python programming and debugging * Creating and editing graphics * Databases * Performing analyses on remote servers * Working with electronics While most of the concepts and examples apply to any operating system, the main narrative focuses on Mac OS X. Where there are differences for Windows and Linux users, parallel instructions are provided in the margin and in an appendix. The book is designed to be used as a self-guided resource for researchers, a companion book in a course, or as a primary textbook. Practical Computing for Biologists will free you from the most frustrating and time-consuming aspects of data processing so you can focus on the pleasures of scientific inquiry.

Those who are afflicted as well as those who are adversely affected by mental illness often live lives of "quiet desperation" without recourse to appropriate assistance. Most caregivers confronted with these illnesses in the work of ministry have had no training or accurate information about mental illnesses, so frequently they do nothing, resulting in further harm and damage. Others may operate out of a theological system that does not adequately account for the nature, severity, or treatment of these illnesses. In Ministry with Persons with Mental Illness and Their Families, Second Edition, psychiatrists and pastoral theologians come together in an interdisciplinary, collaborative effort to ensure accuracy of information concerning the medical dimensions of mental illness, interpret these illnesses from a faith perspective, and make suggestions relative to effective ministry. Readers will learn how science and a faith tradition can not only co-exist but work in tandem to alleviate the pain of the afflicted and affected.

Neuropeptides mediate their effects by binding and activating receptors that are responsible for converting these extracellular stimuli into intracellular responses. Most neuropeptides interact with G protein-coupled receptors that transduce the signal by activating heterotrimeric G proteins leading to alterations in second messenger systems to amplify the signal and elicit the intracellular response. In this review, we describe the general structure of G protein-coupled receptors including the information obtained from crystal structure determination that has given an insight into the activation mechanism of these receptors. In addition, we summarize the components of the signal transduction system (including G proteins, effectors and second messengers generally activated by the neuropeptide receptors). Using select examples of neuropeptide-receptor systems, we highlight the neuropeptides and corresponding receptors involved in modulation of pain and analgesia, body weight regulation, and hormonal regulation. Finally, we discuss the enzyme-linked tyrosine kinase receptors activated by growth factors and discuss the emerging concepts in targeting neuropeptide receptors for the identification of novel therapeutics targeting these systems.

Humans have survived for as many as 90 days without food. But we can live only seventy-two hours without water before going into a semi-comatose state. However, drinking water saturated with inorganic minerals such as magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate and other elements our bodies cannot use, may lead to a variety of unhealthy conditions and diseases. These inorganic minerals, toxic chemicals, fluoride and other contaminants can pollute, clog up and even turn our tissues into stone, causing pain, illness and even premature death. H2 Water, nature's healing water, may help remove inorganic mineral deposits and toxins from our joints, may remove cholesterol and fat, and create a pH balance in our body. This book unlocks the mysteries of H2 Water, which can often relieve chronic suffering. Using the miracle of H2 Water Ther-apy can now help us live healthier, happier and longer lives. - Dr. Howard Peiper, N.D. We are very fortunate to be alive during a global movement towards hydrogen water therapy and enjoy its abundance of health benefits. Hydrogen was present at the dawn of time. It is the father of all known elements in our universe. It is the most abundant gas in our galaxy. Earth could not sustain life without it because 71% of our planet's surface is covered in water (2 Hydrogen Atoms + 1 Oxygen Atom = H2O). Our human body is a "bag of H2O." For centuries, science-minded people have focused on the "O" part of H2O and either minimized or have never considered possible health benefits of the "H2" in H2O. There are millions of hydrogen atoms in every glass of water This raises two fascinating questions. First, how can the 2 hydrogen atoms connected to the 1 oxygen atom in H2O be separated from the water molecules? Second, how can we get these millions of liberated single hydrogen atoms to pair with each other and form a very safe, emerging medical gas, H2, ... and, again, get this medical gas safely infused into a glass of water? So, in this book, we have the privilege of introducing you to what may be the greatest discovery in medical-science and health-care since 1953 - Steven Clarke, C.M.H.A.

Volume 46 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains seven reviews and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the connection with the previous volumes. The articles in this volume deal with endo- genous sodium pump inhibition, with neurotransmitters involved in the central regulation of the cardiovascular system, with leukotrienes and development of novel anti-inflammatory agents, with antithrombotic stra- tegies and drugs affecting the plasma fibrinogen levels, with natural ami- noglycosides and polyamines and their effects in the mammalian orga- nism, with the latest developments in antidepressant agents and with immunopharmacological and biochemical bases of Chinese herbal medi- cine. These reviews provide valuable information on several new deve- lopments in the complex domain of drug research. In the 37 years that PDR has existed, the Editor has enjoyed the valua- ble help and advice of many colleagues. Readers, the authors of the reviews and, last but not least, the reviewers have all contributed greatly to the success of this series of monographs. Although the comments received so far have generally been favorable, it is nevertheless necessary to analyze and to reassess the current position and the future direction of such publi- cations.
