From A Parish Priest: Poems by Fr. Steven Kluge, O.F.M.
As a Franciscan priest I believe that we are called to pray with our eyes opened onto the world. These reflections in verse (I dare not call them poetry) are my attempt to put into words what I have experienced and how I have responded to the glory of God shining through the world. My prayer for those who peruse or read this book is this: As the LORD blesses and keeps you, may you bless and keep others, May you be the face and graciousness of the LORD in the world, May you give the peace of the LORD to all you meet. M. Stanton Evans (d. 2015) was one of the unsung heroes and key figures of the modern conservative movement, offering a model to be remembered and emulated in both thought and deed. A person of extraordinary breadth, he combined the roles of journalist, first-rank thinker, and political action, often at the center of crucial events for the conservative movement from the mid-1950s to his last decade in the 2010s. He was the principal author of the Sharon Statement, the founding document of Young Americans for Freedom. Evans was also a mentor to an entire generation of conservative writers and journalists, including Ann Coulter, John Fund, Martin Morse Wooster, Tim Carney, Richard Miniter, William McGurn, and this author. Evans was libertarian in economics and policy, traditionalist in moral and social matters, respectful of religion, and resolutely anti-Communist. Over the years he wrote a number of elegant articles and one book (The Theme is Freedom) that reconciled many of the strains that often appear between these differing schools of conservative thought. He also wrote a controversial defense of Joseph McCarthy (Blacklisted by History), which is one of many examples of his fearlessness in contesting the conventional wisdom. Beyond his professional profile, Stan was also known for his ironic dry wit, which only came out in person, as well as his personal modesty and kindliness, and fondness for fast-food, sports, and classic rock and roll music trivia. He was “the conservative for the common man.”

Sports Law in the Netherlands

Sports Law in the Netherlands

Steven F H Jellinghaus; Jolande M M Janssen; Dennis Schwartz; Harry Van Drongelen

Kluwer Law International
2022
pokkari
Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of sports law in The Netherlands deals with the regulation of sports activity by both public authorities and private sports organizations. The growing internationalization of sports inevitably increases the weight of global regulation, yet each country maintains its own distinct regime of sports law and its own national and local sports organizations. Sports law at a national or organizational level thus gains a growing relevance in comparative law. The book describes and discusses both state-created rules and autonomous self-regulation regarding the variety of economic, social, commercial, cultural, and political aspects of sports activities. Self- regulation manifests itself in the form of by-laws, and encompasses organizational provisions, disciplinary rules, and rules of play. However, the trend towards more professionalism in sports and the growing economic, social and cultural relevance of sports have prompted an increasing reliance on legal rules adopted by public authorities. This form of regulation appears in a variety of legal areas, including criminal law, labour law, commercial law, tax law, competition law, and tort law, and may vary following a particular type or sector of sport. It is in this dual and overlapping context that such much-publicized aspects as doping, sponsoring and media, and responsibility for injuries are legally measured. This monograph fills a gap in the legal literature by giving academics, practitioners, sports organizations, and policy makers access to sports law at this specific level. Lawyers representing parties with interests in The Netherlands will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative sports law.

No other book about the civil rights movement captures the drama and impact of the black struggle for equality better than Debating the Civil Rights Movement, 1945–1968. Two of the most respected scholars of African-American history, Steven F. Lawson and Charles M. Payne, examine the individuals who made the movement a success, both at the highest level of government and in the grassroots trenches. Designed specifically for college and university courses in American history, this is the best introduction available to the glory and agony of these turbulent times. Carefully chosen primary documents augment each essay giving students the opportunity to interpret the historical record themselves and engage in meaningful discussion. In this revised and updated edition, Lawson and Payne have included additional analysis on the legacy of Martin Luther King and added important new documents.

Community on Land

Community on Land

Janel M. Curry; Steven F. McGuire

Rowman Littlefield Publishers
2002
nidottu
This book looks to the history of the 'the commons' in American and European social thought to better understand contemporary environmental problems. The authors show how American law governing lands and resources relies on the individualist assumptions of Enlightenment thinkers, who regarded land as 'wasted' when not being 'improved' by European agriculture or colonization. Curry and McGuire trace the history of this philosophical and historical legacy and reveal its strong influence on American concepts on community and land. They not only reveal the law's insufficient comprehension of community rights, but they also advocate realistic policy alternatives whereby community governance can better solve the challenges of resource management and other American social problems.

Comprehensive reference text for the development of advanced antenna systems for 5G and beyond Smart Antennas for 5G+ addresses the transformation that simple, conventional antennas have gone through to fulfill the complex and challenging performance expectations of 5G wireless communications and beyond. It also describes the 5G physical layer including the gNodeB, basics of the propagation channel, and user equipment (UE) specific antenna aspects. The authors present various broadband antennas covering mmW bands for 5G+ and B5G applications, explore recent developments in array calibration and plane wave generators, and consider future challenges for 5G+ radio system testing. Novel key performance indicators in which not only conventional RF parameters, but also other parameters and overall radio performance, are examined. The huge shrinkage which was prioritized in 4G modules are now combined with extremely versatile and precise beamforming capacities, thermal mitigation, and link budget compensation design strategies that bring antennas into a new era. As such, antenna integration, flexible and 3D printed elements, the use of metamaterials, and advanced testing of new features are key elements of this book. Additional topics covered in Smart Antennas for 5G+ include: Beamforming, beam-steering, power control, cell breathing, and many other 5G concepts that make the evaluation of a 5G antenna structure a complex processMulti-probe anechoic chamber, reverberation chamber, and wireless cable solutions, RF testing of the 5G antenna systems, and small-cell repeaters for 5G/B5G beamformingPowering and sensing applications in 5G+ printed electronic steerable antenna arrays for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces that stem from metasurfaces3GPP/ITU standards and models for 5G MIMO base station antennas, propagation channel modeling, and link budget considerations The connection between complex but realistically used designs and the way testing has evolved to determine the value of novel designs makes Smart Antennas for 5G+ a must-have resource for advanced engineers as well as newcomers in the field of 5G wireless communications.

Volume 46 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains seven reviews and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the connection with the previous volumes. The articles in this volume deal with endo- genous sodium pump inhibition, with neurotransmitters involved in the central regulation of the cardiovascular system, with leukotrienes and development of novel anti-inflammatory agents, with antithrombotic stra- tegies and drugs affecting the plasma fibrinogen levels, with natural ami- noglycosides and polyamines and their effects in the mammalian orga- nism, with the latest developments in antidepressant agents and with immunopharmacological and biochemical bases of Chinese herbal medi- cine. These reviews provide valuable information on several new deve- lopments in the complex domain of drug research. In the 37 years that PDR has existed, the Editor has enjoyed the valua- ble help and advice of many colleagues. Readers, the authors of the reviews and, last but not least, the reviewers have all contributed greatly to the success of this series of monographs. Although the comments received so far have generally been favorable, it is nevertheless necessary to analyze and to reassess the current position and the future direction of such publi- cations.
