When Catherine Storr's daughter was very small, she was afraid of the wolf under her bed, so every night her mother would tell her a story in which Polly outwitted the wolf. These bedtime stories eventually became the collection Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf, a wonderfully thrilling and reassuring series of adventures in which the clever, independent, and unstoppable Polly fools the persistent, hungry young wolf time and again. In a match much like Bugs Bunny and the Road Runner but more polite and quick-witted, Polly and the wolf develop ever-more complicated ways of turning the tables on each other as they grow older and, in Polly's case at least, wiser. Three more collections of stories followed the original Clever Polly, all hilariously inventive variations on a much loved theme, and all of the stories are collected here for the first time.

The groundbreaking sculptor's most comprehensive monograph to date Jean-Michel Othoniel is an artist who creates sculptures that explore themes of fragility, transformation, and ephemerality. Using the repetition of such modular elements as bricks or beads, his work deploys various strategies that hint at loss and despair – cracks in his objects' perfect surfaces, negative spaces and, early in his career, transient materials such as sulfur. The most authoritative study of the artist's work to date, it includes intimate gallery pieces as well as monumental public commissions around the world.
The Merry Monarch's Wife: The Story of Catherine of Braganza
Charles II is restored to the English throne, and his court is lively and even scandalous. The country is eager for succession to be clear and certain: The next king will be the son of Charles II and his queen, Catherine of Braganza. Yet Catherine, daughter of the king of Portugal and a Catholic, has never been popular with the English people. She is also having great difficulty conceiving an heir, even as many of Charles's well-known mistresses are bearing his children with ease. Catherine is aware that courtiers close to Charles are asking him to divorce her and take another wife--yet she is determined to hold her title in the face of all odds. The ninth novel in the beloved Queens of England series, The Merry Monarch's Wife brings Catherine of Braganza to life and plunges readers into the tumultuous world of Restoration England.

From August 1914, people from Belgium came to Britain seeking shelter from the war. Some settled in Hull, whilst others went to Lincolnshire. Initially, they were regarded as heroes because of their stand against the German armies. Locals, including Belgian Catholic Priests already resident, provided homes, clothes and food, they also raised money for refugee support. Belgian family life continued in much the same way as in their homeland. In turn, the refugees contributed towards the war effort, for example working in munitions factories in Lincoln, Gainsborough and Grimsby, and helping with farming in South Holland. However, attitudes towards them gradually Changed. The Government restricted their activities, fearing that some might be spies, and the conscription of British men stirred up resentment. At the end of the war the refugees were sent home. This forgotten story makes fascinating reading and Katherine Storr has once again shed light on a little-known piece of history with her meticulous research.

In her lifetime Grace Charlotte Vulliamy was famous, having unique war-time experiences similar to those of Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell. The newly-discovered archive material used here shows that Grace was involved in smuggling information and people, including escaped prisoners of war, out of occupied Belgium and back to England. She fought against the class system which left ordinary soldiers out of agreements to exchange or release prisoners. As a mental nurse, Vulliamy recognised that being a prisoner exacerbated detainees' mental suffering. Civilians - non-combatant men, women and children - were often detained in internment camps. She helped Quakers in civilian camps, met prisoners as they were exchanged at frontiers and accompanied them across the Channel. This study reveals information about Grace Vulliamy's early life, her training as a mental nurse, her work in the Women's Emergency Corps on the outbreak of World War One and then in the Netherlands for the Government Commission for the Transportation of Belgian Refugees to England. It touches on her life of relief work in various countries including in Poland after the Russian Revolution, ending in South Africa where she settled in 1937.

This study reveals women’s hitherto ignored lives as refugees and relief workers during the First World War and shortly after. The focus is on coping with and changing the devastating effects of war on civilians, rather than the fighting of it. Wherever fighting took place, people fled from their homes or were trapped behind enemy lines. Most refugees were women and children. While some came to Britain, others remained in or near their country of origin. They were helped, sometimes under bombardment, by Quakers and suffragists. The connection between these women in humanitarian relief is explored, together with the significance of imperialism and national identity. Experience of charity work, suffrage campaigning, relief in previous wars, and personal friendship networks were all important. A geographical overview of these wartime activities provides insights into European civilian experience. The ideological and historical roots of relief work are traced and connections are made with the establishment of new NGOs and the League of Nations. The book offers fresh empirical research and new theoretical approaches to illuminate this significant, but unexplored subject.
