Two Grammatical Models of Modern English (RLE Linguistics D: English Linguistics)

This book focuses on two major traditions in the study of Modern English grammar: ‘old grammar’ in the Great Tradition of Sweet, Poutsma, Kruisinga, Curme, Jespersen and Quirk; and ‘new grammar’ in applications to Modern English of Chomskyan generative syntax. The purpose is to promote the study of Modern English grammar through proper acquaintance with both these two approaches; and in general to promote positive evaluations of pluriformity in Modern English grammar. For the first time, this book brings together in one place general presentations of the two traditions, and of their mutual relations and perceptions. But it argues against the view that the one approach to grammar may ‘use’ the other. It sees the two approaches as essentially incompatible: ‘old’ grammar proceeds inductively and aims at comprehensive coverage of facts; ‘new’ grammar is deductive and attempts to attain depth in its accounts of pertinent facts. As the case studies show, both approaches make contributions to the study of Modern English grammar – precisely provided they retain their own distinctive natures. The core of book is it’s a-Z case studies. These are detailed comparisons, arranged alphabetically by title for ease of reference, of twenty-six problems in Modern English grammar, from both the ‘old’ and ‘new’ viewpoints.
When we say we want to be safe, what do we mean? Is the state capable of achieving this for us? These are important questions for anyone envisioning and building a future anywhere, but especially in South Africa.
François Poulain de la Barre and the Invention of Modern Equality

In a tour de force of intellectual history, Siep Stuurman rediscovers the remarkable early Enlightenment figure François Poulain de la Barre. A dropout from theology studies at the Sorbonne, Poulain embraced the philosophy of Descartes, became convinced of the injustice and absurdity of the subjection of women, and assembled an entirely original social philosophy. His writings challenging male supremacy and advocating gender and racial equality are the most radically egalitarian texts to appear in Europe before the French Revolution. In exploring Poulain's breakthrough, Stuurman sheds new light on the origins of the Enlightenment, the history of feminism, the emergence of rational Christianity, and the social and political implications of Descartes's philosophy. This groundbreaking work, the first comprehensive study of Poulain, brings to life the men and women of the Radical Enlightenment, who pioneered ideas about equality that would shape humankind to this day. Impeccably researched, cogently argued, and lucidly written, this is truly a masterpiece of scholarship.
For much of history, strangers were routinely classified as barbarians and inferiors, seldom as fellow human beings. The notion of a common humanity was counterintuitive and thus had to be invented. Siep Stuurman traces evolving ideas of human equality and difference across continents and civilizations from ancient times to the present.Despite humans’ deeply ingrained bias against strangers, migration and cultural blending have shaped human experience from the earliest times. As travelers crossed frontiers and came into contact with unfamiliar peoples and customs, frontier experiences generated not only hostility but also empathy and understanding. Empires sought to civilize their “barbarians,” but in all historical eras critics of empire were able to imagine how the subjected peoples made short shrift of imperial arrogance.Drawing on the views of a global mix of thinkers—Homer, Confucius, Herodotus, the medieval Muslim scholar Ibn Khaldun, the Haitian writer Antenor Firmin, the Filipino nationalist Jose Rizal, and more—The Invention of Humanity surveys the great civilizational frontiers of history, from the interaction of nomadic and sedentary societies in ancient Eurasia and Africa, to Europeans’ first encounters with the indigenous peoples of the New World, to the Enlightenment invention of universal “modern equality.” Against a backdrop of two millennia of thinking about common humanity and equality, Stuurman concludes with a discussion of present-day debates about human rights and the “clash of civilizations.”

Discoveries of a Manuscript "Dictionary of Constructions" by H.Poutsma

H. Poutsma (1856-1937) is still well known among students of English grammar and its history; mainly, often exclusively, because of his monumental Grammar of Late Modern English. The present monograph extends the canonical basis for appraisal of Poutsma's achievements: Final Words is the first report on work of Poutsma's that has remained unpublished, and thus so far essentially unknown.Apart from ample information on Poutsma and his Dictionary, Final Words initiates interpretation. In argumentation from a range of perspectives, the main line is that in his experimental Dictionary culminates Poutsma's discomfort with respect to orthodox grammar and its preconception of generalization; which anticipates in salient ways some recent developments towards individualization in comprehensive descriptions of English and of languages in general.
