India is home to almost every religion in the world, each practised by its own set of believers. But two religions are practised, indeed celebrated, by all Indians across the length and breadth of the country all the time . . . cricket and cinema. Indian cinema is 100 years old. 105 years, to be exact, since Dadasaheb Phalke made India's first full length silent film Raja Harishchandra in 1913. Sound entered the silent movie when Ardeshir Irani made India's first talkie film Alam Ara in 1931. Sound brought into movies that magical potent, that elixir craved for by entertainment seeking audiences of all ages, all classes . . . . . MUSIC This book showcases some of Bollywood's immortal music melodies from 1950 to 2010 that have stood the test of Time. And the people behind them. Come, let's take a trip DOWN BOLLYWOOD STREET, ON MELODY BEAT

"From Stone Age, wars have been and are being fought. For the weak and poor, it is a war for survival. For the strong and wealthy, it is a war for more power and wealth. And, of course, there is one war simmering unabated since the time of Adam & Eve . . . MAN v/s WOMAN Man feels superior to Woman. Woman finds Man overbearing. This then forms the genesis of a war that ends in nemesis for both. The truth is that like night and day, pain and pleasure, man and woman are inseparable. If one is the song, the other is its very rhythm. If one is the stronger among the two, the other is the very secret of this strength. Lucky couples who realise this truth will find life a journey of joy. Others too blinded by their ego will remain on a path of pain. The ANANDs are one such couple in love and at war too. Will they be lucky? "

Sukumar Roy was the greatest exponent of nonsense literature in Bangla. The author was introduced to his poems at a very early age and was fascinated by the absurdities contained therein. The surreal characters and places became a reality to the author. They followed him when he moved to Texas more than thirty years back. In order to make his virtual "friends" adapt to the new setting, he began to translate the poems keeping the essence with subtle changes in ambience. Thus, the characters speed along a highway rather than walking fast along a narrow lane, spend in dollars instead of taka, and eat donuts instead of deep-fried luchis. The author has made an effort to keep the original spirit of the work as much as possible. He wants to make it available to those who love Sukumar Roy. This is his homage to one of the greatest masters of nonsense literature.

HJBRL - A Nonsense Story by Sukumar Ray
It's on a bright hot summer's day when the hero of our story is transported into a world of hysterically funny characters and bizarre happenings. A cat materializes out of a handkerchief and old men stumble out of a tree- but that is just the beginning! As his new friends get stranger and stranger, the eccentric tension culminates into one of the strangest trials in all of literature. Sukumar Ray's delightful nonsense story was originally called Ha Ja Ba Ra La, a random combination of letters from the Bengali alphabet. It is now adapted into English for the enjoyment of the Western world with adaptations of names and phrases which are just as zany as the Bengali originals.

The Asian elephant has had a unique cultural association with people. Unfortunately, elephants and people have also been in conflict, resulting in the decline in elephants throughout their former range in Southern Asia. This book provides an ecological analysis of elephant-human interaction and its implication for the conservation of elephants. The foraging habits of elephants and their impact on vegetation are considered, along with the interactions that occur between elephants and humans. The ecological data provide the basis for recommendations on elephant conservation and management, keeping in view the socio-economic imperatives of the Asian region. This first comprehensive account of Asian elephant ecology will be of particular interest to conservation biologists and mammalogists.
Self-Stabilizing Systems

Self-Stabilizing Systems

Self- governing control is a defining characteristic of autonomous computing machinery. Autonomy implies some degree of independence, and when a system's ability to achieve its mission is independent of how it is initialized, the system is self-stabilizing. Application of self-stabilization to system and network components is motivated by core concerns of fault-tolerance in distributed systems. Self-stabilization is a solution to problems of transient memory faults and systems with dynamic reconfigurations. Research in self-stabilization explores many of the classic themes of distributed computing (distributed graph algorithms, mutual exclusion, distributed agreement). Recent papers combine self-stabilization with traditional forms of fault-tolerance, consider methodological issues for the design of self-stabilizing systems, investigate randomized techniques, and apply stabilization to new networking models. The workshop brings together concerns from theory and practice of self-stabilization.
Rhymes of Whimsy - Abol Tabol Dual-Language Edition
Close on the heels of the original Rhymes of Whimsy - The Complete Abol Tabol, follows, by popular demand, this dual-language edition with side by side Bengali originals and their English translations. Formatted to enable effortless at-a-glance comparison of each original line with its English translation, this edition offers twice the enjoyment, twice the fun, and is a fabulous learning tool for children. Abol Tabol is a collection of fifty-three children's poems by late author Sukumar Ray, whose nonsense verse has been compared by scholars to the likes of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll. For the first time in more than one hundred years since the publication of the earliest poems in 1915, comes an English translation of the complete collection. Preserving every single rollicking rhyme, and maintaining the exact same cadences as in the originals, Niladri Roy's translation is a superbly line-accurate rendering of every poem in Abol Tabol, that amazingly manages to read as if the poems had originally been penned in the English language to begin with. Each translated poem evokes immediate nostalgia of the original in both rhyme and rhythm.A must-read for enthusiasts of humorous nonsense verse, as well as for academicians and students engaged in comparative literature, South Asian literature and translation studies. Praise for Rhymes of Whimsy from verified purchasers of the original all-English edition: "Wonderful translation. Preserves the original flavor of Abol Tabol."A+ job in translating the original rhymes to English while retaining the excitement, feelings and fun.""The translator has done a fantastic job by keeping the rhyme exactly the way as it is in the Bengali verse. A brilliant piece of work.""Maintains meter and flavor with ease, without compromising meaning.""The poems read very well and do not appear forced, as some translations do.""The essence, the fun, the magic, the rhymes - have all been carefully cultivated."

REVISED & ENLARGED SECOND EDITION.Two books in one: With a total of more than 250 pages, this is a book in two parts: the first comprises the translated poems and original illustrations by Sukumar Ray. The second contains investigative analysis and some never-before-published commentary on the symbolism and hidden meanings woven skillfully into the poems.Translations: With amazingly rhyme-accurate rendering that reads as if the poems had been penned in the English language to begin with, this translation preserves every single rollicking rhyme and the exact same cadences as in the originals. Each translated poem is one hundred percent line-accurate and evokes immediate nostalgia of the original in both rhyme and rhythm.Analyses: Abol Tabol is, in fact, cleverly disguised socio-political satire, written to mock the state of society and administration of early 20th century colonial India. The book provides groundbreaking analysis, linking the poems to specific historical events and uncovering the targeted satire hidden in many of the poems. It answers questions like: Who is Knotty Woodoo (Katth Buro)? Which scandal in English parliament is the poem Sense of Essence (Gondho Bichar) about? Which Bengal-school painting is mocked in Ghostly Play (Bhooturey Khela)? Which three Indian statesmen were the The Delighted (Ahlaadi) in real life? The analysis is beautifully clear, concise and logical, and cites more than 50 separate bibliographical references . This second edition includes minor revisions in translations, for improved correspondence to their originals and enhanced reader-experience in English. It also introduces substantially revised and entirely newly discovered information in the analyses. Original illustrations by Sukumar Ray have been incorporated by popular demand, replacing those in the first edition.
