Scott is a washed-up football player who never made it, and whose girlfriend abandoned him along with his dreams of playing pro football. But things have a way of working out, in this sweet, poetic tale--and a new chapter in Scott's life begins as the old one ends. Offered a position in a Japanese sumo training "stable," Scott abandons his old life, his old name, and even his old hair color, and becomes an aspiring sumo wrestler. And in so doing, he begins to find some kind of center in himself...a center that had seemed lost for good. Thien Pham, the acclaimed illustrator of Gene Luen Yang's" Level Up," returns as the writer and artist of a unique new graphic novel.Highly poetic and structured to echo the slow build and sudden clash of a sumo match, Pham's "Sumo" is an unusual and beautiful book. It's nearly a contradiction in terms: a delicate, deft, tender tale about...sumo wrestling.

Sumo is one of the oldest sports in the world, stretching back over 2,000 years. Within the Japanese establishment, there exists a great sense of pride that so little about the sport has changed in the past millennium. Wrestlers still live by a strict code, in and outside of the dojo, and to commit to the sport requires complete devotion from an early age. As Japan has surged forwards into modernity, this fascinating corner of culture has remained anchored to the past. Gaining behind-the-scenes access is notoriously difficult as sumo is a sport shrouded in secrecy. A full year was spent by the author knocking on doors and filling out endless paperwork before he was eventually granted permission to chronicle the lives of wrestlers; a world where history, culture, pride, and athleticism combine. Sumo documents the strict codes to which wrestlers adhere. The photographs bring to life the stringent dietary and training regimes which require enormous dedication and the many unique practices which make sumo fascinating – a living, breathing showcase of ancient Japan. This book offers a unique set of over 95 photographs that are sequenced rhythmically and poetically in order to give the armchair viewer an insight into not only the drama and excitement of the tournaments, but also the dedication of the wrestlers and the sacrifices they make in order to have a chance to compete at the highest level.

"Sumo" is a fresh and funny introduction to the fascinating world of sumo, Japan's national sport. Author David Benjamin peels away the veneer of sumo as a cultural treasure and reveals it as an action-packed sport populated by superb athletes who employ numerous strategies and techniques to overcome their gargantuan opponents. "Sumo" provides an engaging, witty, behind-the-scenes look at sumo today. This volume is an updated and thoroughly revised version of Benjamin's popular "The Joy of Sumo", which was called the most entertaining and irreverent guide to sumo by James Fallows in "The Atlantic". Benjamin's enthusiasm and insight into the sport remain unmatched, and his frequently humorous descriptions of the personalities and pageantry of the sport will have you laughing out loud.

Sumo Wrestlers & Supermodels: What 20 Years of Teaching Has Taught Me About Saving Black Children From American Schools
Why do so many Black children dread going to school each day? Why are so many Black parents dissatisfied with their children's school even after moving to the suburbs or paying for private schools? Why are so many teachers ineffective in educating Black children? The answer is simple: American schools are not designed to educate Black children. Black children often succeed despite their schools instead of because of them. School can be a fantastic experience that propels Black students ahead in life, but only if both teachers and parents know what Black children's unique needs are and how to meet them. Sumo Wrestlers and Supermodels will teach you: Why America's one-size-fits-all-colorblind education model fails Black children. How to create a classroom environment that unlocks Black children's full potential. How to evaluate whether a school is effectively educating its Black students. And much more You will love this book because an award-winning educator with over two decades in the classroom uses his personal experiences to provide easy to understand methods to save Black children from America's education system that too often ignores their needs. CATCH YOUR OPPONENT OFF GUARD WITH WINNING CLINCHES, TAKEDOWNS, AND TACTICS This innovative book demonstrates how the study of sumo wrestling techniques can benefit practitioners of modern mixed martial arts (MMA), as well as other grappling arts. Sumo, Japan's ancient martial art, has its own particular variations of MMA-style body locks, throws, and trips, among other techniques. MMA competitors know their sport grew with the evolution of jujitsu, but many do not realize sumo can be seen as the root of jujitsu. Sumo uses distraction, angles, and leverage to steal an opponent's balance and take him down. Sumo for Mixed Martial Arts focuses on kimarite, or winning moves. Knowledge of these techniques can allow competitors to catch their opponents off guard with unorthodox clinches, takedowns, and tactics. The author places special emphasis on how smaller players can defeat larger adversaries. This book features *In-depth demonstrations of 48 sumo kimarite (winning moves) with step-by-step instructions*Over 300 photos*Case studies of famous rikishi (sumo wrestlers)*Discussion of sumo's development, rules, and training, as well as recent changes in sumo techniques The author provides analysis of the three basic types of fighters in MMA and how sumo techniques and tactics can enhance their skills. He examines the fighting style of former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, who made highly effective use of sumo wrestling in MMA competition. In Sumo for Mixed Martial Arts Andrew Zerling casts an ancient martial art in new light. He combines his decades of training with a passion for research. MMA competitors, grapplers, wrestlers, and fans of sumo will appreciate the author's analysis and attention to detail. They will also come away with a wealth of new techniques.

Post-translational protein modifications by members of the ubiquitin family are widely recognized as important regulatory control systems for a variety of biological pathways. Their influence on eukaryotic cellular metabolism is comparable to that of other modifi- tions such as phosphorylation, acetylation and methylation. The small ubiquitin-related modifier SUMO uses a conjugation and de-conjugation system closely related to that of ubiquitin itself; yet, the functions of the SUMO system are highly diverse and largely independent of the ubiquitin system. SUMO modification controls the activity of tr- scription factors and can influence protein stability, but it also contributes to nucleo-cy- plasmic transport, chromosome segregation and DNA damage repair. As a consequence, the SUMO system pervades virtually all areas of basic molecular and cell biology, and scientists from different backgrounds, including medical researchers, are likely to enco- ter SUMO in the course of their studies. This volume, SUMO Protocols, therefore aims at presenting a collection of methods relevant to SUMO research in order to make these tools available to biochemists, molecular and cell biologists as well as research-oriented clinicians not yet familiar with the system. In contrast to the ubiquitin system, which has been the subject of several reviews and methods collections, no practical compendium entirely devoted to SUMO has been p- lished.
