Cette croissance est certes un motif de r jouissance, mais dans son sillage, elle fait aussi des ravages bien des gards. La pollution end mique, les probl mes de circulation, l'empi tement des espaces publics, l' puisement des espaces verts et ouverts, les batailles pour les places de parking, la mauvaise gestion/ limination des d bris de construction, la prolif ration des ordures/plastiques/polyth ne, l'insalubrit des bidonvilles, les rivi res sales, sont vidents. Delhi, la capitale dell'India, situata nell'entroterra del Nord e con il porto pi vicino a migliaia di chilometri di distanza, presto diventer la seconda citt pi popolata del mondo, subito dopo Tokyo. Allo stesso modo, Lucknow, Surat, Ahmedabad, Indore, Guwahati, Kanpur, Jammu, Ludhiana, Nagpur e altre citt stanno crescendo nonostante non abbiano un porto marittimo nelle vicinanze. Se da un lato questa crescita un motivo di celebrazione, dall'altro sta comportando un tributo in molti modi. Inquinamento endemico, problemi di traffico, invasione di spazi pubblici, esaurimento di spazi verdi e aperti, lotte per i parcheggi, cattiva gestione/smaltimento dei detriti edilizi, proliferazione di rifiuti/plastica/politene, vita malsana nei bassifondi, fiumi sporchi, sono ovvi. Ma l'enorme peso di questa crescita si fa sentire in diversi modi negativi in tutto lo spettro della societ .
