When Eugene Martin couldn't afford drawing paper in the mid-1970', he would make pen and ink drawings on paper napkins. A hieroglyphic archetype would suddenly appear. He would later incorporate many of these napkin drawings in mixed media collages in the late 1980's and 1990's in Washington D.C. and Lafayette LA. Other secret languages were written down with graphite pencil and pen & ink on regular paper. These artworks can also be viewed at http://youtube.com/nemastoma. In the late 1980's-early 1990's Eugene Martin created large acrylic paintings on rag paper that he would photograph upon their completion. Months or years later he might revisit these same works and transform them by painting over some of the areas, by slicing out parts, or by incorporating segments from other works. This publication documents aspects of this transformation that was enabled by the digitization of photographic slides taken at the time the original compositions were completed. Selected jpegs showing one or more versions of the original painting(s) were then juxtaposed next to an image of the final version of 48 works. In some instances, the transformation is minimal, in others it is substantial, giving rise to complex mixed media collages. These artworks can also be viewed at http://youtube.com/nemastoma. This publication includes 143 of Marco Leonardi's color photographs that capture the poetry of Washington D.C.'s urban architecture. The original Ektachrome and Kodachrome slides were taken between 1982 and 1988 and converted to digital files for use in this publication. Marco Leonardi was born in Sanremo on the Italian Riviera in 1933. From the mid-1970's until his death in 1990, he had made Washington D.C. his home. Leonardi shared his apartment with his close friend, the visual artist Eugene James Martin, from the late 1970's until 1988. Martin taught him how to look at art and how to focus on photography.
