The Shariatisation of Indonesia: The Politics of the Council of Indonesian Ulama (Majelis Ulama Indonesia, Mui)
This book is a succinct and critical account on the shariatisation of Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world. It is the first book in English to uncover and explain the shariatisation of Indonesia in a comprehensive way. With the abundant primary and secondary sources, this book is a reference for other scholars who conduct research on the inclusion of sharia into legal and public sphere of Indonesia. It comes with an important conclusion that the change of such a non-theocratic state like Indonesia into a theocratic state is highly possible when its law is penetrated by those who want to change the state system.
The Big Book of Real Analysis

The Big Book of Real Analysis

This book provides an introduction to real analysis, a fundamental topic that is an essential requirement in the study of mathematics. It deals with the concepts of infinity and limits, which are the cornerstones in the development of calculus. Beginning with some basic proof techniques and the notions of sets and functions, the book rigorously constructs the real numbers and their related structures from the natural numbers. During this construction, the readers will encounter the notions of infinity, limits, real sequences, and real series. These concepts are then formalised and focused on as stand-alone objects. Finally, they are expanded to limits, sequences, and series of more general objects such as real-valued functions. Once the fundamental tools of the trade have been established, the readers are led into the classical study of calculus (continuity, differentiation, and Riemann integration) from first principles. The book concludes with an introduction to the studyof measures and how one can construct the Lebesgue integral as an extension of the Riemann integral. This textbook is aimed at undergraduate students in mathematics. As its title suggests, it covers a large amount of material, which can be taught in around three semesters. Many remarks and examples help to motivate and provide intuition for the abstract theoretical concepts discussed. In addition, more than 600 exercises are included in the book, some of which will lead the readers to more advanced topics and could be suitable for independent study projects. Since the book is fully self-contained, it is also ideal for self-study.

The topics of unemployment, underemployment, wage trends and patterns, and the relationship between poverty and the labour market are of interest to all policy makers, researchers, academics and journalists concerned with economic development. This book traces the evolution of the Indonesian labour market between the early 1970s and late 2000s. This entails a (a) review of macroeconomic policies and their employment impact; (b) review of unemployment and underemployment trends; (c) review of wage trends and living standards; (d) relationship between poverty, inequality and the labour market; and (e) labour market regulations, employment and the business environment. The book comes up with a number of policy-relevant findings. Macroeconomic policies, particularly inflation targeting in the 2000-2007 period, have not been conducive to employment generation. The assumption that unemployment is an appropriate indicator of labour market performance and, more importantly, that it is closely aligned with poverty, is shown to be inaccurate. Sustained real wage growth in the twenty-year period before the 1997 financial crisis is contrasted with the lack of improvement since then, a period otherwise of respectable economic growth by international standards. The predicted adverse consequences of sweeping labour market regulations in 2000-2007 on properly measured employment, unemployment and labour costs did not materialize, mainly because of low compliance. It seems that a restrictive macroeconomic framework has been more constraining for employment growth than the perceived labour market rigidity during the post-crisis period. The book concludes with an evaluation of several ‘reactive’ and ‘proactive’ labour market policies. Though these are complementary, policy makers in Indonesia have probably put too much emphasis on reactive policies such minimum wage and severance pay, and not enough on proactive policies aimed at creating an adaptable and skilled workforce.

This is the inside story of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), from its beginnings in 1964 to the signing of the Oslo agreement in 1993. Shafiq Al-Hout, a high ranking PLO official until his resignation in 1993, provides previously unavailable details on the key events in its history such as its recognition by the UN and the Oslo peace negotiations. Analysing and criticising decisions and individuals, including Yasser Arafat, we are taken right to the heart of the decision making processes; our eyes opened to the personalities and internal politics that shaped the PLO's actions and the Palestinian experience of the twentieth century. An essential piece of history that sheds new light on the significance of the PLO in the Palestinian struggle for justice.
Education Policy and the Construction of Neo-Liberal Citizenship in Pakistan
This book looks at Musharraf’s Education Reforms in Pakistan and analyses the relationship between education policy, curriculum, Pakistani identity and citizenship. It explores changes in the curriculum and how a reformed curriculum has shaped Pakistani identity according to the exigencies of time. The book underscores the significant role that Musharraf’s reforms to revamp the curricula at formal educational institutions, from primary to higher education levels, as well as in the Madrassas, to make the curricula compatible with global education trends. The government aimed to replace all outdated content that promoted hatred, extremism and the status quo, with new themes informed by tolerance, interfaith harmony, human rights, environmental preservation, loyalty, the moderate vision of Islam, and skills orientation. The purpose of these themes in the curricula was to make education market-oriented and to construct a Pakistani identity in the context of Neo-Liberal Citizenship. The book provides an in-depth look into the transformation of education curriculum in Pakistan focusing on the exploration of the intersections between education, politics, and citizenship in Pakistani society. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in understanding the impact of education policies on citizenship and political processes in Pakistan. Its insightful analysis and thorough research make it an excellent resource for students, scholars, and teachers working in the fields of anthropology, citizenship studies, education, Islamic studies, gender studies, Pakistan studies, political science, political sociology, public policy and South Asian studies."

Goethe and Hafiz

This book offers a study of West-East cross-cultural and cross-contextual literacy by investigating Goethe’s relationship to the poetics of fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafiz in the West-östlicher Divan. Goethe’s collection of poetry, this book argues, constitutes a turning point in the history of German poetic subjectivity. The intellectual and historical significance of the Divan is examined by considering Goethe’s conception of history both in relation to Hegel’s philosophy of history as well as the linear notion of progress throughout the nineteenth century. Furthermore, the book demonstrates how the rise of aesthetics and the transition from a theological to a secular-humanistic conception of history and humanity in Europe positively influenced the reception of non-European literatures at the end of the eighteenth century. Hafiz, as argued here, owes his textual presence in the Divan to a cross-cultural and cross-temporal poetic vision that has its roots in the European Enlightenment. The book also elaborates on the role translation plays in the development of poetry and poetics as exemplified in the works of Sir William Jones (1746-1794) and Josef Freiherr von Hammer-Purgstall (1774-1856), translators of Oriental poetry into English and German.
Developing Appropriate Roadbase for Bangladesh Pavements

Developing Appropriate Roadbase for Bangladesh Pavements

In Bangladesh due to the shortage of stone aggregates, mixes of brick aggregates and fine sand are widely used for the construction of pavement foundations. The brick aggregates are weak in strength properties and degrade rapidly particularly in presence of moisture. Again, heavy rainfall and rising water table in the rainy seasons cause moisture saturation in the pavements due to lack of necessary drainability. This leads their faster deterioration and consequent premature failure, whether the pavement material is stone aggregate or brick aggregate, due to the development of high pore water pressure under the moving wheel loads. Many pavements are also vulnerable to recurrent floods, once in every few years, and simply washed away. In this research work, use of cement stabilized brick aggregate-sand-soil mixes as roadbase material has shown satisfactory results both in laboratory investigation and trial construction. A primary assessment has indicated that the mixes are also considerably cheaper than the conventional stone aggregate roadbase mix.
