Syed Hussein Alatas and Critical Social Theory: Decolonizing the Captive Mind
Known for his most famous works, such as The Myth of the Lazy Native (1977) and The Problem of Corruption (1986), as well as his concept of the "captive mind," Syed Hussein Alatas (1928-2007) has made significant contributions to decolonization theory, social theory, and other forms of thought critical of the current neo-colonial and neoliberal world. Although Edward Said acknowledged his debt to Syed Hussein Alatas' work, especially its influence on Edward W. Said's most famous book, Orientalism, Syed Hussein Alatas' work has long been overlooked by Western academia, trapped in its Eurocentric perspective. Spurred by the commitment to continue the development of Syed Hussein Alatas' work, this edited volume attempts to demonstrate the relevance of Syed Hussein Alatas to numerous academic fields, and the potential for his thought to be transformative in the international socio-political realm. Twenty authors from various disciplines and countries have contributed to Syed Hussein Alatas and Critical Social Theory: Decolonizing the Captive Mind, in the hopes of bringing his work to the forefront of social and political theory. Contributors are: Mona Abaza, Joseph Alagha, Masturah Alatas, Sharifah Munirah Alatas, Syed Farid Alatas, Syed Imad Alatas, Hira Amin, Dustin J. Byrd, Zawawi Ibrahim, N. Jayaram, Teo Lee Ken, Habibul Haque Khondker, Victor T. King, Jo o Marcelo E. Maia, Seyed Javad Miri, Carimo Mohomed, Chandra Muzaffar, Norshahril Saat, Mostafa Soueid, and Esmaeil Zeiny.

Thinkers, who within Islamic tradition known as Mujtahid, have played an important role in shaping the great events and changes in history in every part of the world. The extent of their influences went beyond generations, and the spark that was ignited in their writings has inspired a series of rigorous debates and academic studies that last until today. What makes their independent reasoning, or Ijtihad, so dynamic is its polemical nature; so polemical that it has initiated debates and discussions from both camps - the supporters and the detractors - that has lasted for centuries. This makes one of the key criteria for one to be known as a Mujtahid, for their ideas must travel across time and remains relevant long after their own demise. Syed Shaykh al-Hady has definitely met all those criteria and has secured a place as one of the greatest Mujtahid in the history of this land; a man that has a strong root in Islamic tradition and a profound clarity over the socio-political condition of his people.Syed Shaikh al-Hady lived in a period where the hegemonic position of Traditionalist Islam in the Malay-Muslim society was challenged by modernization. The traditionalist ulama' perceived modernity as an ideological enemy; but on the other hand Syed Shaikh al-Hady worked and preached for a synthesis between the two. He believed that Islam and modernization are not antagonistic to each other. Instead, both are useful combination to revive the rational and scientific approach within the Islamic discourse hence making it very attractive to the younger generation of his time. And even until today, Syed Shaykh al-Hady remains as an inspiring figure and an icon for the various contemporary Islamic reformist movements that have resumed the work of islah (reform) and tajdid (renewal) for the betterment of the Muslim society.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, a 19th-century educationist and reformer, pioneered modern education among Indian Muslims. He founded the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College in 1875, which became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920, revolutionizing Muslim thought and promoting intellectual growth. This book explores Sir Syed’s personal life, from his family’s shift from Mughal to British loyalty to his service under the British and motivations for modern education. It examines his childhood, relationships, and his mission to reform Muslim society through education. Filling a gap in English-language scholarship, this work offers fresh insights for researchers on Sir Syed, Aligarh Muslim University, and educational reform in India.
