Bereits im Vorwort zu Band XVII l dieses Handbuches wurde darauf hingewiesen, wie sehr die Moglichkeit der Strahlentherapie durch die EinfUhrung der in Beschleunigern erzeugten ultraharten Strahlungen und die Anwendung der von kunstlichen Radio- nukliden ausgehenden Strahlungen erweitert worden sind. Der vorerwahnte Band beschrankte sich auf die Grundlagen der Strahlentherapie und behandelt nur die Methoden der Strahlentherapie mit Rontgenstrahlen. 1m Gegensatz hierzu werden in dem hier vorliegenden Band jetzt die Moglichkeiten der Therapie mit Corpuscularstrahlen, d. h. schnellen Elektronen, energiereichen Neutronen und schweren Teilchen, wie Protonen und Deuteronen beschrieben. AuBerdem enthalt der zweite Band zum Thema Methoden der Strahlentherapie in zahlreichen von auf den einzelnen Spezial- gebieten besonders erfahrenen Autoren verfaBten Beitragen Beschreibungen uber die Therapie mit Strahlungen, die von den kunstlich erzeugten radioaktiven Stoffen aus- gehen. Hierzu gehort vor aHem die Telegammatherapie mit 60CO und 137CS, die Nah- bestrahlung und Kontaktbestrahlung mit umschlossenen radioaktiven Stoffen, die inter- stitielle Implantationstherapie, sowie die Therapie mit inkorporierten, offenen Radio- nukliden. Viele dieser Methoden haben sich in jahrelanger Praxis bereits bestens bewahrt und sind aus der modernen Strahlentherapie nicht mehr wegzudenken. Ihre Technologie wurde eingehend beschrieben. Andere Methoden sind vielleicht geeignet, in der Zukunft Eingang in die Praxis zu finden und deshalb nicht weniger interessant. Der vorliegende Band enthalt auBerdem einen Abschnitt uber die Bewegungs- bestrahlung, da diese Technik in gleicher Weise mit konventioncllen und ultraharten Rontgenstrahlen als auch mit den Gammastrahlen kunstlicher Radionuklide und ultraharten Rontgenstrahlen von Beschleunigern durchgefiihrt werden kann.

In January, 2010, the author, with her brother and sister, moved their mother into an assisted-living apartment. They cleaned out her house and placed her household items in storage. The author was elected to gather and organize the family memorabilia and papers pertaining to their genealogy. She became interested in researching the life and times of her ancestors and even discovered an unknown branch of the family. An old bread board, given to her by her maternal grandmother, became the inspiration for this fictional story of a bread board passed down through seven generations of women, with their stories. Some customs and events from her own family are woven into the narrative.
What can be learned from a story woven out of fragmented moments of joy, pain, horror, and blissful awareness? Flesh Mapping is an attempt to create a pedagogy of shared narrative, place, and politics; to narratively map the injuries of the material, emotional, and spiritual impact of poverty, displacement, hunger and war on an individual life. The book is an invitation to instructors in education, anthropology, women’s studies, and labor studies to re-imagine education as the praxis for liberation, renewal, and hope. It serves as a process of naming the injuries inflicted on real bodies by privilege and power, like sites on a map. The goal is not simply to name and make visible privilege but to simultaneously create emergent spaces of dissonance in education that can challenge and transform power at the site where the personal is political.
