Edith Kermit Carow grew up in New York City in the same circles as did Theodore Roosevelt. But only after TR's first wife died at age twenty-two did the childhood friends forge one of the most successful romantic and political partnerships in American history. Sylvia Jukes Morris's access to previously unpublished letters and diaries brings to full life her portrait of the Roosevelts and their times. During her years as First Lady (1901-09), Edith Kermit Roosevelt dazzled social and political Washington as hostess, confidante, and mother of six, leading her husband to remark, "Mrs. Roosevelt comes a good deal nearer my ideal than I do myself."

A "NEW YORK TIMES" NOTABLE BOOK Her technique was simple: aim for the top, an envious colleague wrote of Clare Boothe Luce. No American woman of the twentieth century aimed so accurately, or rose so far, as this legendary playwright, politician, and social seductress. Born in New York s Spanish Harlem, with nothing to recommend her but beauty, ferocious intelligence, and dry wit, she transformed herself into the youthful ""managing editor of "Vanity Fair." She married two millionaires and wrote three Broadway hits, including the biting satire, "The Women." Her second husband, Henry Luce the publisher of "Time, Fortune, "and later at her suggestion "Life" was only one of the dozens of men she entranced. Adding politics and power to journalism and drama, Clare used sex, street smarts, acid humor, and money to plot a career more improbable than anything in her own fiction. Not content with mere wealth and the acclaim of transatlantic cafe society, Clare Boothe Luce confessed to a rage for fame. This extraordinary book the result of more than fifteen years of research by Sylvia Jukes Morris, her chosen biographer tells how she achieved it. Praise for "Rage for Fame" A model biography . . . the sort that only real writers can write. Gore Vidal, "The New Yorker" "" The] riveting first part of a two-volume biography . . . Relentlessly candid, meticulously documented, Morris s book traces Clare Boothe] Luce s rocketing rise from illegitimacy and poverty to wealth, power and fame. "Hartford Courant" "" Powerful and resonant, admiring at times, always critical, at times searing, but ultimately fair. "The Philadelphia Inquirer" "" Crammed with enough drama for several mini-series. " The New York Times" "" An important book about an important figure . . . a stunning feat of biography. "Forbes" A dishy biography that is also a formidable work of research. " Slate " "" One of those rare books where the reader dreads the final page. " Newport News Daily Press" "From the Hardcover edition.""

A new ‘Multi-Coloured Manual' This book is a successor to and replacement for the highly respected manual and handbook on the benefits of flood and coastal risk management, produced by the Flood Hazard Research Centre at Middlesex University, UK, with support from Defra and the Environment Agency. It builds upon a previous book known as the "multi-coloured manual" (2005), which itself was a synthesis of the blue (1977), red (1987) and yellow manuals (1992). As such it expands and updates this work, to provide a manual of assessment techniques of flood risk management benefits, indirect benefits, and coastal erosion risk management benefits. It has three key aims. First it provides methods and data which can be used for the practical assessment of schemes and policies. Secondly it describes new research to update the data and improve techniques. Thirdly it explains the limitations and complications of Benefit-Cost Analysis, to guide decision-making on investment in river and coastal risk management schemes.

Few institutions have as profound an impact on the American theatrical landscape as the Tony Award-winning Williamstown Theatre Festival, located in Williamstown, Massachusetts. New Plays from Williamstown Theatre Festival 2015-2021 provides a sample of the dozens of plays that have been created and/or premiered at the Festival during the Artistic Directorship of Mandy Greenfield. In addition to stories that shine a light into new or underexplored corners of the human condition, these plays frequently feature complex and boundary-pushing central roles for women actors. These six plays are manifestations of living, American playwrights grappling with and breathing dramatic life into the conflicts and questions at the heart of who we were, who we are, and who we will become. These plays imagine and interrogate pieces of the human experience we are still in the midst of unpacking and understanding.Complete with introductions by each of the authors reflecting on their work, these historic, award-winning, and groundbreaking plays now live in conversation with one another in this unique collection.

Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot

A detailed and highly personal account of the life and works of one of the most influential female Impressionist painters: Berthe Morisot. Berthe Morisot won over the Impressionists with her talent and became the first woman of the group alongside Monet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, and Sisley. Likewise, she was heralded by the greatest writers of her time; in this tribute to her, an anthology of citations from Paul Val ry, St phane Mallarm , and Jean Cocteau offers an intimate portrait of the artist and her work. Morisot's paintings demonstrate how far ahead of her time she was when she created them, pioneering a new style of painting. However, she was underestimated for more than a century--most probably because she was a woman. Including previously unpublished correspondence with key members of the Impressionist movement, this text focuses on the important stages of Morisot's career, including her first participation in the Salon de Paris at the age of twenty-three in 1864, her marriage in 1874 to Eug ne, Manet's brother, and the birth of their daughter, Julie Manet, who became the subject of many of Morisot's subsequent paintings. This book is an essential read for any lover of Berthe Morisot's work, and indeed for anyone who appreciates the work of the Impressionist artists.

In Central and Eastern European countries, inequalities for Roma families living in marginalized communities are deep, and continue troughout their lives. Yet mainstreaming Roma into European society would not only be fair, but also a smart economic choice, given the overall ageing population.
